ONITSHA: SEE WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY THAT THE CAMERAS DIDN’T SHOW YOU

I often look out for underlying meanings behind actions especially as I work for a Boss who is not dramatic yet conveys far reaching lessons with every action he takes.

Just as we arrived the venue for the commissioning of Niger Street and Port Harcourt road, the State Protocol team approached the State box to brief Governor Soludo on the event flow having drawn up a list of “eminent” persons who would speak to the people, remember it was a live event airing real-time on major National television stations. Instantly Governor Soludo without prior notice changed the program, in his words, “I appreciate that these Stakeholders you have listed here have to speak. But, I think today should be strictly for and about the people. We are not here to praise or score ourselves, I think I want to listen to the people’s reaction and I am not commissioning any of these roads. Get the leader of the Keke and Shuttle union in the area or their representatives and the leader of the Market union to speak and commission the roads. Ours is to get the job done to their satisfaction. We are here to listen to them. It is their project”.

At this point, I got confused because I understand the risk in allowing such unpredictable redirection especially on a live National television, knowing how daring and audacious Onitsha locals and residents can be. The event kicked of in line with the Governor’s directives, and to the enlightenment of all that were present it became an event of revelations and historic symbolisms.

First, was the Chairman of the Onitsha Market Union, who openly confessed that relative to prevailing rates across neighboring states, that they, as tax paying traders, are “cheating the Anambra State Government”, according to him, they pay the lowest taxes comparatively across other Southeast States. He further notified that the Traders, having seen visible developments

SOLUDO COMMISSIONS NIGER STREET/PORT ROADS IN ONITSHA, REASSURES OF MORE INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, of Anambra State has Commissioned the the 5.1 km Port-harcourt Street and Niger Street Onitsha in, Onitsha South Local government area.

Performing the function, Governor Soludo highlighted the significance of the road to Onitsha residents and environs being the largest commercial hub in West Africa, noting that his government is deliberate about regenerating Onitsha to its former glory.

The Governor who noted that 247 kilometres of roads have so far being completed out of the 450 kilometres of roads awarded across the state, maintained that the roads are guaranteed to last a minimum of 20 years

Governor Soludo therefore charged the residents to keep the roads and drainages clean to enable free flow of water to river Niger, noting that the road was formerly in a state of disrepair.

Governor Soludo further pointed out that construction of the two roads was highly significant due its potential of boosting commercial activities in the area as well as aid smooth transportation of goods to the Onitsha Main market.

The Governor promised that his administration would continue to provide the enabling environment for traders to thrive by abolishing illegal levies imposed on the people saying it was in fulfillment of his campaign promises of eliminating touts from the streets.

Earlier, in bis remarks, the Commissioner for works Engr ifeanyi Okoma thanked the Governor for the fulfilment of his campaign promises as well as his passion of simultaneous construction of about 450km of roads across the state.

While pledging the support of traders, support for his administration, the President General of Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association ASMATA, Chief Humphrey Anuna expressed delight in the construction of the road that leads to the main market and prayed for continued wisdom on the Governor.

The project Managers Foretex Engineering company and their counterparts handling the project also thanked the governor for finding them worthy to execute the contract, saying that the project would boost commercial activities in the area.

The occasion witnessed a dramatic turn when the Governor requested that representatives of keke drivers and shuttle buses to cut the tape, assisted by the clergy.

The Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Barr JPC Anetoh, Chief Protocol officer, Hon Chinedu Nwoye among others were at the occasion
