Those universities should shut down! It's the free market - companies/organisations that cannot withstand change should be allowed to close. Most of those universities were polytechnics previous governments changed their statuses to universities.

If a university cannot thrive even when foreign students enrolment has plummeted, it should close. Bankruptcy/insolvency is part of business. I doubt the likes of Imperial College, University of Exeter, Durham University, Leeds University, London School of Economics, Oxbridge, UCL, Queen Mary's University etc, are complaining. Alternatively, the affected universities should be merged with other struggling universities.

While the decision to stop international students from bringing their dependents into the UK has its harsh effect on UK universities' finances, I think it will have more positives on the UK economy in the long run.

Let's be clear here. Having a bunch of people overwhelm your infrastructure is a big challenge to any serious country anywhere in the world. It's only in Nigeria that we allow a chaotic city like Lagos exist. The UK is having serious immigration issues and cutting down on dependants is one of the ways of arresting the anomaly.

While the number of Nigerian applicants to UK universities has significantly reduced (by 44% or so), applicants from other countries (like India that commands the highest number of applicants) reduced only by a small fraction.

Also, UK universities are now lowering their requirements to encourage more international students to apply. For instance, they are waiving IELTS and increasingly accepting 2.2 graduates for MSc and MBA courses.

In the long run, yes, the decision will affect UK universities' finances, but I think we are blowing things out of proportion in Nigeria because our people are the worst hit! So, we should stop crying more than the bereaved in this country.

Let's get Nigeria to work for all! The decision to slash the number of dependents coming into the UK is for the best interest of that country.

With all due respect, the universities in the UK are only interested in your money. They do business with education

....And what exactly are the universities in Nigeria interested in?!! Free education?!! grin

Come to UK, school, get a degree, then see if you can get a job and fit into their society... But nope, Nigerians and others must pack their generations into the country at mere mention of admission.

Even granting some Nigerians tourist visa is risky... Same issue. Same desperation.

I heard some pilgrims to Israel and Saudi become 'missing' when it's time to leave.

Let them continue with their policies so that Africans and Nigerians especially can stop siphoning money from their own country that has a poorly funded education system.
It is theft that is the problem here not funding! Most of the contracts awarded under Tetfund and NEEDS assessment are conduit pipes for thieves.

TINTINABULATION:
Every action has consequences.

Very true.

Our action of inadequate government services and utilities has the consequences of making us export ourselves to Britain and Europe to be second class migrants whose descendants are called black even when the father is white, like the new Welsh leader.

What a legacy of collectively extreme poverty paupers who can't provide ordinary water in all their buildings.

Truth be told, Nigerian has feed many countries unnecessarily due to our reckless spending and not due to our ineffectiveness.

I hope our next generation would not be like this.

Almost all schools in the United kingdom are facing serious financial problems.
My school is not exempted as lecturers want to go on strike any moment because the management has closed down a lot of departments and are asking the lecturers to go..Lecturers said no u can't just sack them.

Other universities are going into merger to pass through the storm.

Nigeria and Indians plays a critical role in the funding of UK universities. It was when I arrived that I started seeing sizeable number of Nigerians studying BSc program.

This universities are crafty as they open irrelevant department.. Project management this and that etc
Even if u graduate they won't even give u job unless the menial jobs around.

Our leaders has to sit up, create hope for Nigerians so that people don't exit this country.

I believe if we hav good exchange rates like £1 to #500 in the black market... japa won't reduce as much as people will still be able to afford to study in the uk Universities... even we may see couple getting separate addmission and living togther as a couple... but how many people can afford £1 to #2000?

They would accept uneducated Arabs that don't even speak English, pay for their housing but persecute the negros that paid for school.

How dare you take millions from an African and tell them not to bring their nuclear family? But if he was Asian or East European, they would welcome them, tell them no need for a job, we would feed and accommodate you.

Exchange rate issue
Job issue
