The leadership of the National Union of Electricity Employees, on Sunday demanded a reversal of the recent increase in electricity tariffs.

The union, in a statement signed by its National President, Mr. Adebiyi Adeyeye, said the body would not hesitate to withdraw its members that would be used by distribution companies to impose the new tariffs if the hike was not reversed.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on April 3 raised electricity tariff for customers enjoying 20 hours of power supply daily.

Customers in this category are said to be under the Band A classification and the increase will see them paying N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.

Reacting to the development, the NUEE President, who said the tariff hike would disproportionately affect those that rely heavily on electricity for their daily needs, added that shift in pricing dynamics threatens to further expose inequalities among Nigerians by placing undue strain on the less privileged segment of the society.

Adeyeye argued that there was nothing wrong with electricity subsidy by government, as leadership of advanced countries also subsidise electricity for peopleThe statement partly read, “It’s not out of place to have the government subsidise electricity.

In some advanced countries, they still do that till now. Germany, for example, has a long history of supporting renewable energy resources through feed-in tariffs.

The subsidy is paid based on the amount of electricity produced, and it helps to offset the initial cost of installing renewable energy systems.

Also, the United States has various programs that provide subsidies to low-income households to help them afford their electricity bills.

These programs are typically administered by state and local governments, and they can take the form of direct bill discounts or assistance with weatherization measures that can help reduce energy consumption.

The recent electricity tariff hike is a blatant disregard for the economic struggles of Nigerian workers. Not even in a society where minimum wages are ambivalently doubtful.

NUEE strongly condemns this decision and demands immediate action to reverse it.

“If the government fails to address the crippling cost of electricity, NUEE will not hesitate to take strong action, including the swift withdrawal of our members expected to be used by DISCOs to impose the tariff hike on the good people, to protect the livelihood of our members.

“I, however, call upon all Nigerians to join us in raising our voices against this injustice.

Together, we can force the government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens over corporate interests. Our unwavering commitment remains to safeguard the interests of our members and ensure equitable access to electricity for all Nigeria.

Electricity cost in North Dakota (US) is N130 per KWH, minimum wage is N1.3 million naira monthly

Electricity cost in Texas (US) is N195 per KWH, minimum wage is N1.3 million naira monthly

Electricity cost in Nigeria is N225 per KWH, minimum wage is N30,000 naira monthly

You're paying more for electricity per KWH compared to someone earning 43 times your salary

When the GEJ government increased petrol price, they promised to build 3 refineries, but Nigerians rejected the increase.

The US government provides subsidies (30% or more) for people who want to install their own solar or alternative electricity

What will the Tinubu government commit to doing for you with revenue generated from the energy sector?

It amazes me how people will be doing a particular thing over and over again and be expecting a different answer. Truly, I'm not surprised by the happenings around cuz I saw it coming. Someone came up and told us that it's his turn to rule over 200 million people that are majorly youths. Some of the mofos here crying are the people that were blindly rooting for him.

You can even tax both social and religious beliefs.

300% on band A is high

They should have done

150% on A, 75% on B, 50 on C and 25 on D rather than all the increase on A

Though most band A user are elite citizen they mostly can afford it so far there is light

The tariff hike is madness. Amenities like power/healthcare etc should be funded with government revenue but when you budget so much for frivolities like 4 billion for renovation of vice presidents house where osinbajo stayed and did not die , 500milion for yacht , 2 billion for renovation of presidential wing of dodan barracks in Lagos when seat of government is in Abuja etc you have little to fund capital projects like power. Then you Push the masses under the buses of PPP funded by capitalist business who are out to make unholy profit which drives up the cost of such services at the end of the end users.

Who can afford such an outrageous price for poor service undecided even the so-called band A can't boast of 12hrs electricity.
And most of them will also fill the burnt just imagine a country with a minimum monthly wage that is below 30 USD asking her citizens to pay such a tariff. Nigeria electricity tariff is the lowest in Africa agreed but our minimum wage is also among the lowest to the extent that Kenyans earns 3-4x than ours. The government should be more focused on achieving 24 hrs electricity supply whereby the use of Gen in every household and biz will no longer be necessary.
