OBAFEMI AWOLOWO INTERVIEW: Twenty Pounds Policy And The Igbos by IjapaTiroko: 3:36pm On Jun 23, 2021
This is a continuation of the excerpts/minutes from a Chief Obafemi Awolowo interview on my previous thread.

TWENTY POUNDS POLICY

"That’s what I did, and the case of the money they said was not given back to them, you know during the war all the pounds were looted, they printed Biafran currency notes, which they circulated, at the close of the war some people wanted their Biafran notes to be exchanged for them.
Of course I couldn’t do that, if I did that the whole country would be bankrupt.
We didn’t know about Biafran notes and we didn’t know on what basis they have printed them, so we refused the Biafran note, but I laid down the principle that all those who had savings in the banks on the eve of the declaration of the Biafran war or Biafra, will get their money back if they could satisfy us that they had the savings there, or the money there.
Unfortunately, all the banks’s books had been burnt, and many of the people who had savings there didn’t have their saving books or their last statement of account, so a panel had to be set up.

I didn’t take part in setting up the panel, it was done by the Central bank and the pertinent officials of the ministry of finance, to look into the matter, and they went carefully into the matter, they took some months to do so, and then make some recommendation which I approved. Go to the archives, all I did was approve, I didn’t write anything more than that, I don’t even remember the name of any of them who took part. So I did everything in this world to assist our Ibo brothers and sisters during and after the war.

And anyone who goes back to look at my broadcast in August 1967, which dealt with post-war reconstruction would see what I said there"

These matter again ! i was surprised when kanayo.O.kanayo in afamefuna movie made reference to the £20 insinuating Nigeria govt short changed them, and £20 was what they had to build there entire life upon,

Most of us were not there but we can ask rhetorical questions to unveil the truth

It is a known Fact, Biafran currency was printed, on what bases was the currency given out ?? undecided
when Emiefele printed new notes, Nigerians were ask to deposit there Old note in there respective banks. isn't ?

The most logical thing Biafran bank at the time could have done is ask igbos to deposit there Old naira notes in xchange for new Biafran notes equivalent.

My guess is most igbos withdrew there money from Nigeria banks and took it to xchange for Biafran notes .. after the War no one will accept the Biafran notes from them, dem enter One chance !

what Next cheesy they resulted to sentiments and play the victim card, it worked ! they got free £20 they never appreciated cheesy lawason land and Alaba int'l were given

During the biafran war, i am sure Non-igbos died and some Nigerians suffer loses as well what did those ones Get ?? cheesy

Out of millions, the ones that have money in the bank then are not up to 5000.
There were very few banks.

The question most Igbo people are not asking is.... WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NAIRA NOTES THE LEADERS TOOK FROM THEIR PEOPLE IN EXCHANGE FOR BIAFRAN POUNDS?. That money ends up in some people's pockets..

Have they even admitted they Exchanged there Naira for Biafran pounds

There countenance is they left there Naira with Nigeria banks, so on what measurement was biafran currency alloted to igbos when they returned home ? there must be an xchange

Zimbabwe just introduced a new currency, citizens will bring in the old notes to get the new currency that is the standard practice anywhere ...

Are you saying your ancestors left Nigeria for their new country, biafra, without withdrawing all their deposits in Nigeria banks before leaving?
Knowing that there was no Internet banking then?
Knowing that you can only withdraw from the same branch where you opened your account then (if you open an account in Firstbank Yaba, you cannot withraw from Firstbank Surulere in those days)?
Many of your people sold their belongings in various part of the country and relocated to biafra their new country as instructed by Ojukwu.
People like Chinua Achebe, Zik, Ekwueme, Nzeribe, Mbanefo even Ojukwu etc never complained that they were given #20 only. Who are those faceless beings that left huge money in their bank accounts, but was given only #20.
That #20 was a kind gesture and act of benevolent from the Federal government of Nigeria as suggested and implemented by great Awo. It is never done anywhere in the world.
Also remember that all the federal allocations due to Eastern region during the war period was well kept for them by Awolowo, and this was released to them via Nnamdi Azikiwe and Easterners controlled bank after the war. Please read with opened mind.

Ndi Yoruba that kept Ndigbo rent money for them all over ala Yoruba when the latter went back to Biafra land and then returned the accumulated money to them on their return.

Ndi Yoruba that looked after young Ndigbo boys and girls in ala Yoruba who their parents refused to take back to Biafra. You don't believe me, go and ask Obisia Nwakpa, google him if you don't know him, he spent the Biafra war in Mushin with Yoruba families.

We are well aware of places where Ndigbo properties where not returned.

Anyway at some point, you will accept that Ndi Yoruba deserve a lot of praise from Ndigbo when it comes to events aroujd the Biafran war.

Attimes I imagine.. what if Pa Awolowo wasn't the Finance Minister back then?. Would a Northerner still nursing the pains of Ahmadu Bello's brutal murder in the hands of Nzeogwu grant Igbos a dime not to talk of who0ping £20..

Yorubas are the only ones that returned Igbo properties (plus rent collected in some cases) back to them in South West after the civil war, yet these people keep displaying bitterness towards our people and are always after Yoruba downfall in Nigeria. It's the Hausa-Fulani they prefer to play second fiddle to for reasons best known to them.
Person wey you dey play second fiddle to no go ever deem you worthy for presidency.

In all fairness, Nigeria owed Igbos nothing during and after the civil war because most if not all of them exchanged the currency at the time to biafran pounds (a currency that wasn't recognized anywhere in the world and had no value)...
My guess is that some Igbos took all the currency notes their people exchanged and stashed them in bank accounts abroad to be yeilding interests for them to pick up later on. History has it that the Igbos looted the Central Bank vault in Benin and took away all the monies saved there by other ethnic groups in Nigeria. The same Igbos blew up the Niger bridge that Nigerian government is spending billions to fix now.

They never asked Ojukwu and his lieutenants questions about the whereabouts of their finances and the fate of their offsprings after the war.. the hunger to fight and kill other Nigerians was too intoxicating for them that they left their feeding in the hands of the enemies they were fighting. You bought arms and ammunitions but didn't plan for food, then you turned around to blame Awolowo for not feeding you during the war.

They'll do things without thinking of the outcome and then turn around to blame others. Those in Port Harcourt took over all the Igbo properties in their city which they termed abandoned properties and spoils of war.

This will keep on coming up. But the questions are:

Are the Igbo the only ones that lost money during the war, what about Rivers and Midwest even some Hausa?

How much did the average Igbo that collected 20 pounds bring when leaving their towns and villages?

How much was standard six salary? 10 pounds, school cert? 14 pounds.

House rent in proper Lagos for one room 5 pounds, Surulere 2 pounds ten, Mushin one pound or ten shillings outside.

Yet, they talk today as if 20 pounds was 20 naira.

Awo's distractors called it a bribe to Igbo to vote for him.

Look, no matter what you do for Igbo, they will call you names.

God bless you for this.. the £20 Awolowo paid each one of them was even a jamboree that other tribes didn't benefit from.

I look in awe when I see how the revisionists try hard to paint Awolowo in bad light.. as if £20 then is #20 in present day.. This was after they exchanged the currency we had as legal tender to biafra pounds (mere paper without value). Calling them ingrates is an understatement.

Igbos can never be satisfied even when they claim to be the richest tribe that has the highest standard of living
Do you know why?
Because of the yorubas
Igbos lifelong ambition is to become greater than the yorubas ..... As if it's the yorubas fault that the Europeans got to their coasts first and it's because we had a great Oyo empire alongside sister Benin Kingdoms as well as Itsekiri who have been exploring the ocean for centuries.

Thats what drive their politics

And since yorubas too no slow down in their development efforts it will be a lifelong game of catch up for most igbos

While they are still struggling to get a fake Agulu man into Aso rock ,a second yorubaman to become president is in Aso rock..... this fact alone is making igbos hate yorubas to the extent they started hating themselves for not being able to stop the progression of yorubas politically and economically. ...
