Gagauz are a Balkan Orthodox people who speak a native Turkic language, although Russian is more commonly used. After collapse of the USSR they immediately tried to secede from Moldavia and join Russia. This attempt failed, and they remained inside the new independent Moldavia as an autonomous region. For thirty years, they have been resisting the anti-Russian policies of the Moldovan government.
