Minding one's business is nice but we're beginning to take it too far to an unhealthy level. I and my husband recently moved into this house of 6flats after we got married. Nobody welcomed us as new neighbours. I noticed the neighbours were cold and some will pass without even greeting. I continued greeting them warmly when I meet them.

Between now and then 2 neighbours have done baby dedication and another's daughter got married. The invitations were sent through the compounds WhatsApp group. We innocently attended all not knowing the invites were just for formality sake. We wondered why other neighbours didn't come.

I gave birth last year and till today none of my neighbours that we all live in the same house together has said "oh madam you don born?" "Congratulations " "thank God for safe delivery ". Even the women amongst them who are mothers too. Even the one's we attended their events.
I'm not even expecting them to come to my apartment bearing gifts for baby but at least an acknowledgement for such an event. They'll see me spreading baby clothes or carrying baby out and not even a simple gesture to acknowledge that your neighbour put to birth. Is this wokeness or what?

I was just thinking about this issue today and wondering how things have changed. My father had a house of 4flats and I remember how everyone were to each other. Brother's keep. The children played together and attended school together etc. Here Nobody relates with each other.

It's strange and disheartening truly.

Even my rich former landlord with 21 tenants (min 1 bed rm), who spends more time in Texas than Naija, parks his modern tundra, walks outside with singlet to conduct short distance business. Na im first live for the street, over 25 yrs ago. Highly respected man.

My neighbour whatsapp status reads "his wife has given birth", He is not mobile. Called, congratulated and offered my car so he drives them home. very good Yoruba guy.

Na neighbour (highly educated, rich and my senior) handle relocation logistics for me. I needed the help but didn't request directly or indirectly. like the guy follow carry heavy load. He started live as a mechanic. I called him when the truck broke at red light. Igbo guy.

When our families or visitors we know look for help, nobody hesitates. But no visiting anybody's house.o, we talk outside and drink together on weekends.

In short, even where I'm living now, neighbours don't call anyhow, any call from them is always very important.

Abuja neighbours lack humanity in them.

Trust me, you have a very good landlord. May God continue to bless him. I can't forget in a hurry one of the most horrific experiences I had.

A friend of mine ( of blessed memory)who travelled abroad came back and needed a place to stay. As bachelor wey I be, I accommodated him because I felt it would be a waste of money for him to lodge in a hotel for like 2 months. On that fateful day, I went to see my parents and called this my friend that I may come back late, so he should please be on the lookout in case the gate is locked.

Unfortunately for me, my phone ba3 died and unknowing to me, this my friend had gone out but put my key somewhere for me because according to him, he had been trying to reach out to me, but my phone was off. To cut the long story short, I came back around 10pm and was knocking and knocking at the gate for like 3 hours and no one came to open. Around 1am or so, I had to scale the fence because I didn't have any friend close by and I didn't want to go back home to my parents because it was very dangerous at that time of the day with robbery incidents and all and also because I was a bit drunk due to "several issues "I was facing at the time.

So back to my story, na so I scale fence o and slept in front of my door because I didn't know that my friend kept the key for me. I thought he mistakenly took it with him. Around 3am or so, that was how I felt a sharp pain on my back . I didn't know my neighbours or landlord had gone to call OPC vigilante and also the police that a thief broke into the compound. Na so them start to molest me o. Honestly, I cried that day, not because of the pain, but because of the denial and embarrassment I got.

I vowed never to give birth in that compound even if I marry because it made me to realise the kind of people I was living with. Imagine coming at 10pm and nobody responds at all despite using force and even stones to hit the gate to get attention. See ehn, I DONT CARE neighbours are in abundance. They just only care about themselves and I learnt a very big lesson that day.

Suffice to say the police that came were reasonable and very understanding and never molested me, but the OPC vigilante people that used the side of cutlass to be flogging me. I had my revenge on the perpetrators exactly a year after and they also pleaded with me and we settled, but that's a story for another day !

The main reason i hate being “available” to i neighbor is that at a point they start to know your movement, they know when you are in the house, when you are not in the house.

It is a security issue and dangerous situation.



Trust me it is better, best sef. If you continue giving trust them to continue asking. They would even think you are rich, if they want to rob anybody guess who would be atop the list.

If i were the one i would move out of such neighborhood. One thing I noticed my mother hated so much while growing up was people just hanging around the neighborhood doing nothing.

You go out and come back you see them on the street on benches playing draft, gisting, doing absolutely nothing whiling away time. That is the no-future gang, in a couple of years people are making progress they would be wandering why they are still on the same level. Discourage your family members from mixing with them.



The truth is that Some of you are too careless. In my apartment building it has been said times without number as you are going out close the gate!

Cuz you want to go for 5 minutes the security of the whole building should now be at risk faa. If anything was stolen you should be held responsible and made to refund.

These species of neighbours (I think I have an idea of their tribe) would never help you even if see you dying. Yet, they are the first people to exit the compound to church on Sunday. They act nice only to their fellow statesman. Others are treated as outcast.


I know someone who suffered a bone injury at night. That person was in distress and wailing in the dead of the night. Certainly the neighbours must have heard this person wail, but nobody came to inquire or help. This person had to lay helpless in the bathroom with a broken bone from past midnight until past 4 A.M before help from another compound came

You can't blame the neighbours completely because alot of security challenges we're facing in this country.

I once heard of an incidence where a neighbour was used to rubb from his neighbour. What happened was, the armed rubber got access to a flat in the compound, got hold of the man in the house, with gun on his head, he was asked to lead them to his neighbours flat. He knocked on his neighbours door, requesting that the neighbour should help him with something, unknowingly to the neighbour armed rubbers where behind the neighbour knocking. Only for him to open the door for the neighbour and he was rubbed. So imagine!

So to be on the save side, when you're new in a compound, it won't cost you anything to get to know your fellow neighbours and get their phone numbers. And when leaving your flat, far or near, never leave without your keys and phone. Because even me, i won't open door for anybody in the night if I'm not expecting anybody.
