Nigerian housewife’s 1980s grocery list goes viral

In the 1980s, a Nigerian housewife made a shopping list that cost ₦94 and included rice, beans, yam, cassava, meat, and several other goods. This list generated discussion on social media.

The video, with the caption, “A 1980s housewife’s grocery list,” A list that reads, “She has ₦100 to spend,” includes rice, beans, meat, cassava, sugar, bread, milk, and a few other goods that could all be purchased for a fraction of the amount they would cost today—between ₦1 and ₦10. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The list, totaling ₦94 for all items, attracted attention online as many commented on the cost of living in the 1980s compared to the present.

See some reactions below:

Dude: “Dollar was $1 to N1. Today it’s same as going to the market withN155,000.”

Dennis Nathan: “Why couldn’t we continue with this economy? It’s common over Europe that’s to tell a country is working.”

Hakeem: “So the person kept his market list since 84 till date? Easy abeg.”

king_Greezly: “and na still these old men and women wey write stuff like this, come spoil am for this time.”

victormorrow38: “Lies to gain traffic. What brand of sugar was sold @2.80k per packet in 1980?So a packet of sugar cost more than a bag of cement i sold 2.00 naira.”

Yawn….

Minimum wage then was 80 naira a month.

So that list doesn’t prove anything.

Children posting rubbish.

Back then those prices were expensive for the common man.

Even in the 1980s, my pocket money for a whole semester at university was 500 naira, and it was more than enough for everything including catching cruise, shacking beer daily, buying weed, chasing babes, everything.

If you guys don't have something serious to post, go and find something useful to do with yourselves. sad

Things never remain the same whenever Buhari takes hold of power, both in the 1980s and 2005-2023 embarassed, if this same woman makes a post about the same items just a few years after her first list when Buhari was in power, she would have observed far higher prices, Buhari should never have been allowed near govt lipsrsealed

DO YOU KNOW
Did you know a customer filled a $13m lawsuit against RedBull and won the case? He sued them for false advertisement, claiming he drank RedBull and RedBull didn't give him wings grin

Do you also know Carrie Underwood also got sue for her track "Jesus take the wheels"? When a fan was listening to the song while driving and decided to take things literal and Jesus didn't take the wheel....The fan won the case too grin

I don't see anything special about the price. Inflation occurs in all the countries of the word. Check the cost of things in UK in 1950 in the video below 👇

this is how you know kids on this forum

that 90 is fuccking damn hard to see in the 80s, it's more than minimum wage

life was never better in the past, in fact it was way more horrible, now you see average people driving car then even a secondary school principal cannot afford 504 car

I still remember this day. Back then, we bought new cars made in Nigeria. There was never a tokunbo car. Life was more pleasurable and the people less unfortunate.
The whites regarded us and even came to our schools to learn. Prior to 1980, if you had naira note and took it to the airport, people would want to buy your note with dollars just because it had more value. I could practically travel to London with just ₦90.
Let me just stop here before water runaway my eyes

Olympus Nigeria has fallen

Wise thinking, I don't believe that rubbish there. The price of yam is 3x of rice, which I find unbelievable, expect you're telling me the person is trying to buy a trailer load of yam.

wink

And salaries were between N200-500 monthly, maybe N600 if possible. Big men earned N20000 Or more. Anything that cost N1000 by 1990 was very very expensive.

And yes, Nigerians complained times were hard then, especially from 1982 onwards when the oil price crashed.

No one was earning N5000 monthly back then.

Olu3939:
Annual salary as a fresh graduate in 1984 was 4224k. That is 352 Naira. That was my salary when I married my wife 36 years sgo

Just to give you an idea of salaries back in the day from another thread (2020)

I read a book written by Minister of Justice or the Attorney General of the nation around the same time. His salary as stated was N1200. My mum's salary was about N500. Every thing has gone up, both income and expenses.

If truly you were a university student in the 80s, you should know that the monthly minimum wage was 125 Naira not 80 Naira. At the prevailing exchange rate of ₦0. 61/$1, this was equivalent to $204.92 a month.
