I just secure an acre of farmland in Ifo, Ogun state. The land has been cleared/weeded and I intend to plant maize followed by Habanero Pepper when the maize is winding down.

I need advice on whether it it's okay to start the planting of maize now as it has already rained once this year or wait for more rain.

You can try Lagon, it's a good pre emergency herbicide for maize and cassava, when applied properly, you can be assured of up to 8weeks of weed control

Welldone my brother. I appreciate your thread. Just did my own nursery and I have a few questions for you.

Can I use Lagon as pre-emergent herbicide on my pepper beds before transplanting? If yes, at what rate per 16L knapsack do you apply? Also do you incorporate Foliar Fertilizer in your setup? If yes, which brand have you been using on your pepper farm?

Thanks again.

I haven't used per-emergent herbicide for my pepper farming so I can't recommend you to use lagoon or any per-emergent herbicide.
Yes I use foliar fertilizer (Haifa bonus) for my pepper farming

It's the time of the season and I Just started to harvest on my pepper farm

I planted less than what I planted last year due to the economic state of the country but if I knew pepper would be this costly I would have done more than that. Pepper farming is still one of the best vegetable farming to venture into. Up till now 25kg of Hot Habanero Pepper is still soaring high at 60k per bag here.

Pepper farming is an area of vegetable farming I would advise any serious agribusiness minded person should venture into. This is not a motivational post or preaching post but my little way of helping those that are looking for a crop to grow.

Unlike other vegetables, pepper is very easy to plant and less stressful and will even give you more chances to engage in any other activities.

Some markets in your area still depend on the outside supply of Pepper from the north and Cameron. Imagine you supplying freshly harvested pepper from your farm to the market.

No competitors

Low supply and high demand

Almost every family consumes pepper in Nigeria.

it's always easier said than done, Before you start up that Pepper farm get ready for PEPPER LEAVE CURL VIRUS and CHILL THRIPS.
These diseases are one of the greatest challenges in Pepper farming. It can run down your whole Pepper farm and sink in your capital, labour and time.

The best solution is prevention. Once the crop is totally infected there is only little or no chance of recovery.

Very nice and inspiring thread.. OP, u have really been doing a good work, more grease!

I have some concerns! I am a very strong advocate of agriculture but I am kind of skeptical to venture into it (Ibadan). I have a land but its quite far to where I live, just bare land. I am even thinking of selling it off sef. My concerns are;
* If I start, bcoz of distance, its going to be difficult taking care of what's planted.
* Even if it gets to harvest, there's risk of being harvested by strangers, goats etc
So how is that manageable, mind you, no financial muscle at the moment!

It depends how far your farm is from your location, pepper doesn't need a 24/7 lookout u can attend your farm once in 2 days

I can't say for the stranger harvesting because I farm on the rural area we experience that kinds of things and goat don't eat pepper

Valid point.
Ideas like pruning the stems

as a professional farmer I am scratching my head over this figures because the pepper I know especially super habanero will do better than 200% roi,for instance such small turnkey project will not cost no more than #300k to harvest,15 bags weekly for 15 weeks is 78 bags, the remaining weeks will round it off to 100+ bags, which at a price of #15-19k we will have an average of #1.6 m,from this figures it is easy to conclude that 500% ROI was produced by that farm and on professionally managed pepper farm 1000% Roi is easily achieved,if you know what you are doing

Greetings farmers, In this thread I will explain how Easy and profitable pepper farming is though I won't be Explaining in details grin

I started off early last year around the end of February, I did my nursery of roughly 3000 seeds (I pack of the super habanero f1 & the f2) after the nursery process I had at least 2500 seedlings which i transplanted into a small black nylon bag due to the temperature and weather conditions and it made it. easier for me to manage, it stayed at the small nylon bag till it first rain, I have already prepared the land so i transplanted the pepper to field, though it was raining daily but it was enough for the pepper to keep surviving. few weeks after transplant it started producing flowers and bearing seeds during that time it happens to be raining at least twice a week and it made the pepper healthy. around 2nd week of June my pepper started ripping and my first harvest was four bags. I harvest my pepper weekly and it increases after each harvest, during that period pepper was very scarce, costly and Infact,i wasn't meeting up with the supply because of the demand of the pepper in my area, when it was at it peak production I harvested 13 bags consecutively for 6weeks which was shocking and a bag was sold a 19k per 25kg bag. I harvested my pepper for 4 months before the production began to reduce but was still profitable. After the total harvest I made a profit of 200% return on Investment .

Pepper is very easy to maintain as long as you are giving it the necessary requirements and has just 40% stress but the stress can't be compared to the joy of making money every week. grin

We go again this year grin
Bro what's ur view on the difference in yield between the F1 and F2, is there really a noticable big difference

I initially planted Piquante red F1 and there's more land available so I'm planning to either buy more Piquante red F1 or just go for the F2 super habanero as everything is based on management of funds now
Is it worth the wait to save up for more Piquante or the super Habanero F2 will just do fine
Thanks in anticipation

Honestly speaking I don't see much difference between the f1 and f2 is just that the f1 seed are all red while the f2 will have some yellow but that's not an issue, the production and growth period are the same with little to no difference
