Opay, Palmpay, Others Warn Customers Against Crypto Trading by Ibrahimcoomasie(op): 7:12am On May 04, 2024
Nigerian fintech companies have warned their customers against trading in cryptocurrency or any virtual currency on their apps, threatening to block any accounts found engaging in such activities.

At least four fintechs—Opay, Moniepoint, PalmPay and Paga—have communicated this development to their customers on Friday.

Last week, the Central Bank of Nigeria stopped major fintech firms like Kuda, Opay, PalmPay and Moniepoint from onboarding new customers.

The CBN’s move was linked to an ongoing audit of the Know-Your-Customer process of the fintechs, which have been under scrutiny in recent months over concerns around money laundering and terrorism financing.

Before the CBN’s directive, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had obtained a court order to freeze at least 1,146 bank accounts owned by various individuals and companies allegedly involved in illegal foreign exchange transactions.

In a notice issued on Friday, OPay said it would take strict measures against customers who violate its policy, which aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s stance on cryptocurrency trading.

“In compliance with the CBN directive, please note that OPay prohibits any cryptocurrency and all virtual currency trading. Any account engaging in such activities will be closed, and customer information will be shared with regulatory authorities.

“Please ensure that your account does not involve any cryptocurrency or any other virtual currency transaction,” the fintech firm warned.

In a similar move, Paga, a fintech firm that has processed transactions worth $32bn in 15 years of operation, said in an email to its customers, “As a Paga account holder, please ensure that your account is not used for crypto and virtual currency transactions. Paga accounts in violation of this regulation will be blocked,” it said.

PalmPay, another major player in an emailed statement said, “We strongly advise against using your PalmPay account for transactions involving cryptocurrencies or any other virtual assets.
Please be advised that failure to comply with these regulations may result in the suspension of your account.

“Our team is diligently working to ensure full compliance with all regulatory directives, prioritizing the stability and integrity of our platform,” the fintech stated.

On Thursday in Lagos, the founder and CEO of Moniepoint, Tosin Eniolorunda, called on cryptocurrency peer-to-peer (P2P) participants to halt their activities, citing the financial sector’s prohibition on such transactions.

“This is a self-reflection of our industry. As you know, fintech apps are used for fraud. One of the things that led to the most recent announcement is that crypto players were manipulating the naira, especially with the P2P market,”
he said.

Recently, key players in the fintech sector were summoned to Abuja for discussions on KYC protocols, underscoring the regulatory scrutiny facing the industry.

The apex bank had also crackdown on cryptocurrency exchange, Binance in February after being accused of manipulating the naira exchange rate.

Before Binance stopped operation, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso said nothing less than $26bn was moved by unknown sources through Binance Nigeria in one year.

The CBN and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) announced a partnership to investigate and penalise those involved in illicit activities within the FX market.

One of those unsustainable policies from the powers that be. I never used any of these banks anyways.

Let's see how the brick and mortar banks key into this.

On 9th May 2022, FG banned Crypto.
23rd December 2023, FG lifted Ban on Crypto.

These people don't know how to run a country.
They basically do try and error all the time.

Now they want to blame the digital age banks and those trading Crypto for their failure to curb the naira to dollar surge.

You can't stop people from trading Crypto currency.
It's a digital asset of the new age. And it's global.

Making it illegal is much more worse.

Very useless government.
The only way naira can gain against dollar is when export almost equat import, when Nigeria start attracting investors, when the rate of japa slows down due to good economy, when job is available to at least 60% of the youths, when businesses feel the warmth that they can grow to multinational and when electricity is constant.

We have so many problems in this country and we are focusing on digital banks.

Chasing shadows.

This government is making policies that are not favourable to the masses. If you're solving the problem of dollar hike, it is not this approach. They keep borrowing trillions in dollars without using it to industrialize the nation and neither paying back. They kept eating dollars and venting anger on the poor masses.

Solution to Nigeria problems must be from top to bottom. If the top repents, the bottom na small thing, because the head is what controls every other part put together.

angry

The government is wrong about this crypto thing. Yes, I think crypto is a scam, but people have the right to use their money for whatever. SO if someone wants to buy cyanide and drink it himself, so be it.

But the reason why the naira is falling is simple. We. dont. have. a diversified economy. We cannot earn enough forex to buffer the naira and provide for people's dollar needs. And dollar needs have gone up in the last 10 years

SO banning crypto and forex speculation...is just like building a Potemkin city. It looks good on the outside, but behind it is all rotten. It won't stop the naira being weak, so long as we are NOT A PRODUCER NATION.

Field Ruwe really gave us the way forward 12 years ago, but most people subjected him to abuse. I don't blame them...people no wan see.

Government should focus on diversifying the economy and raising tax income, instead of blaming people for forex issues. The same speculation has been happening for years.

Re: Opay, Palmpay, Others Warn Customers Against Crypto Trading by SocialJustice: 8:43am On May 04, 2024
Announcing for the sake of it. In reality, P2P transactions can not be tracked by the banks.

The best way is to kill P2P on the platforms like they did to Binance but there are hundreds of exchanges lined up to replace them.
