The employer no get conscience. The money he will eventually spend on the case is far more than what is lost. Forget the issue of accountability, the employer is wicked and demonic. I guess he doesn't even treat the staff well

In sharia law... stealing of things like this isn't regarded as stealing... when you steal food for 1-2 person is regarded as a hungry person not actual theft...

It's in this country that a politician stole 80b and was asked to 500m... for 2600 loaf bail is 50k...
Same courts but different judgement for rich n poor... for 2 loaves of bread can't there be an in house settlement or punishment?
Foodco una do this one ooooo

Why steal? This is how they wreck people's businesses and enrich themselves. From two loaves they'll perfect ways to steal more as the opportunity arises.

If the job doesn't pay well, resign and go look for a better one. Someone creates employment and gives you a means to eke a living but your evil heart wants to kill the business. Why?!!!

And if you dare owe these same thieves salary even for a day, they'll revolt.

The boss may spend a lot of money prosecuting the case but I know he just wants to reach them a bitter lesson.

Well said!

I believe that the employer want it to serve as deterrent to others, too. People can be terrible in taking their employers for a fool. After running it aground, they will leave for another organisation, while the employer is counting his losses.
It is not about the price of the bread or the amount spent on prosecution, it is about resetting the sense of his employees.
Imagine having 20 of them, with each taking 2 loaves per day, at the end of the month, how will the business breakeven, let alone making profit?

A crime is a crime no matter how you look at it. I operate a small bakery on the side.

You make an average of 5 - 10k per bag of flour and if you are lucky you get to produce 5 bags daily consistently. Bigger bakeries make even less margins per bag but make up with turnover.

You have perhaps 5 - 10 staff depending on the structure of your operation.

The Assumptions continue;

You produce 500 loaves of bread a day (quite unlikely for a small bakery). Each loaf sells for 1,300.00 ex-factory.

1,300 x 500 = 650k (Projected revenue)

You have a 2.5 margin for defects, errors, returned products and quality control/R&grin.

16,250 already set aside for projected in factory losses.

650 -16,250 = 633,750

16,250 x 30 working days = 487, 500.00

487,500 x 12 months.........5,850,000.

This is just a rough estimate of what you can loose in one year from just being sentimental.

I've been building and advising bakeries large bakeries and food businesses for several years and I can tell for free...the easiest place to get a job in Nigeria is a bakery. Running on the same corollary one of the easiest business that fail are bakeries.

Even with digital cameras mounted everywhere you will lose bread unless you have a system which is carefully developed to suit your prevailing circumstances.

Bread can be eaten in toilets where there are no cameras.

Bread will be eaten underneath the work table and cameras won't catch them.

Bread is melted in the mouth without munching during packaging.

Bread is left in pans and rolled of of the oven.....in collaboration.

The step taken here should not be trivialised. The man is saving his business. He will take the boys there.....keep them in custody for at least 3 weeks and then withdraw the case.

His productivity will rise after he has asked for written and signed commitment from all staff that anyone who will be caught subsequently will be shown absolutely no mercy.

That should give him some respite.

Finally, those of you who have no business whatsoever and by business I.mean an operation that runs in your absence pls be careful and perhaps reticent about what judging people by their reactions because you never know the predicating actions.

Small causes...Great effects.

This Is new to me.

So if the person is hungry everyday he steals for 1 or two people everyday and he is forgiven everyday.

Very impressive. I think that law will have several caveats.

It's not a waste.
If you don't set examples, others will do worse later.
If you steal 1 dollar from Walmart, they will prosecute you to the full extent of the law. Walmart is owned by one of the richest families in the world. There's a logical reason why they do that and it has helped their business. Most people now know that Walmart will prosecute you for any shoplifting. That's the way it is supposed to be.
We allow small crimes to slide then we complain when they become bigger thieves.

This is very true.
There was a very small theft in one of the Walmart outlets Kansas MS.

Young female Caucasian.
She was caught on camera.

Matter was pursued with Gusto.
Of course fueled by political undertones. Many aggrieved coloureds groups came up with references and the girl had to be prosecuted and jailed.

Sentence was however suspended.

I got to find out that Walmart did that send a very strong message across to it it's millions of staff worldwide. They soil your reputation completely in all ways possible such that getting a job in a reputable organisation becomes difficult.

A jailbird in US has a very significant connotation.

If what two adults can steal is two loaves of bread then it is clear hunger or covetousness pushed them to it,
however, the boss is the wicked soul here if you want to serve a deterrence;

he can suspense them for days plus a deduction in salary ... thats ok

This is where I fault our judicial system
A man thief 2 loaves of bread (2600)
Then judge asked to be bail for #50,000, If they hv such amount probably they will not a loaf of bread while can d judge give them either 2 or 3 community service or 15 day imprisonment

Those our Polithiefcian will physically thief a billions and there bailout will 1.5 million naira

The employer is a sicko. He could have just sacked them instead of wasting the time of the court and the will I call him crazier magistrate granted them bail for 50k over a matter he would have just asked the delinquents to do minor community service. If it was a politician now you would be surprised at the ridiculous bail terms for stealing billions
Truly Nigeria has two sets of laws. One for the criminals in power and the rich folks the other is for the common man on the streets.

Stop wailing over the lost of an election and move on with your life. We know that some of you voted for the first time and your candidate lost the election, it could be painful to deal with but stop seeing every Yoruba or Muslim as your candidate's enemy

Why not sack them, they can't buy bread of 2600 now how will they get 50,000 for bail, what does the employer stand to gain from this cus I don't see anything from this news that would bring any form of benefit to them.

You can not justify their actions. Also you can not try to tell the boss how best to punish his thieving workers. It's his prerogative. And when you see him, ask him why he's chosen to take them to court, you might understand better and not call him wicked.

If you've tried to build a business before in Nigeria and encountered stealing by your trusted staff then you'd understand.
