I've been struggling to accept the existence of a god for some time now. I believe a divine or a supreme being might exist somewhere, but which one of the gods of the thousands of religions of the world is he?
Let's take the Christian God for example. Why doesn't he reveal himself like in the days of old when he spoke to humans in the Bible?
Why do we defend his actions and personality when they're at times questionable?
Why do we have to live our lives carefully enough to please a being that we've never met or seen and hope to make heaven at the end?
Just take this scenario for example. Imagine you never met your father and you don't know how he looks like. Then your mum says the only way to please your father or even getting to see him is by following some instructions in a book. If you don't follow the instructions well enough or he's not impressed with your efforts, then he will reject you as a son!
Why are we created, brought to earth and then spend our lives trying to impress someone we've never seen and hope we are "righteous enough" to earn a spot in heaven?
I have considered atheism in the past but I don't have enough evidence to completely conclude that there isn't a god somewhere.
The Bible is a great book full of wisdom yet surprisingly, it is not void of contradictions and things that leaves you with a thousand questions.
I guess we might never know. No one has died and came back to tell us if heaven and hell exist, which makes the concept of heaven and hell a brilliantly crafted one. For you to know, you need to die first which means you can't come back and reveal the truth.
I think religion is the biggest mystery man created for themselves.

God is more like a software or system where souls emanate from, it is not a supreme being who creates or control the universe....
Souls or consciousness is created by this God and the soul evolves....
The beings in the bible and referred by other religions are not God, but rather extraterrestrial species with advanced technology that created humans....
With the vastness of space and the universe, it is plausible that we are not the only intelligent species....
There is nothing logical to suggest anything godly about Jehovah....

With regards to spirituality, which happens to be the major reason why people cling to religion....i have come up with a theory, there are dimensions which exists, astral plane , and from these dimensions, non-human entities influence humanity, and because of our lack of understanding of spirituality and the science behind it, religion fills up the vacuum...
Some of the entities in the astral plane are malevolent, while some are benevolent...
This unrestricted influence in human affairs gives rise to the spiritual things we see on earth and our ignorance worsens its impact....
In future, i am sure we will use science to understand what these dimensions are and see how we can restrict the influence of these entities....
I am in different groups that talk about astral projection, people have gone to the astral plane and have contact with these entities, i also attend eckankar, in eck, u learn how to travel to the other dimensions....

Did I mention religion, one mistake you are making is to assume someone who believes in God is necessarily Religious.
