Nigerian government has been borrowing pension funds for as long as I can remember.

Pension fund managers are one of the biggest investors in NTBs and savings bond. When you buy fixed income instruments from the government, you're essentially borrowing the government money.

Why is this one generating so much uproar?

This makes no sense especially from a duration matching perspective and I am surprised it's actually a thing.

The Financial services sector in Nigeria can do so much more. This is exactly why billions are been declared in profits and the economy isnt impacted.

If u read the woman's petition to the IGP, u will see where she mentioned the issue of Childs right act.

How can a lawmaker be seen not only encouraging but sponsoring the marriage of underage girls in their dozens and then tagging it as constituency projects?

I don't think the woman is in the wrong for raising the issue ; it is within the purview of her office. Except of course if we are saying she's only on the seat to protect the right of southern girl child and not northern girl child.

This country sef!
No, I'm not saying she shouldn't have intervened, just that there was a way to intervene without ruffling feathers, especially since a federal legislature was now involved. The Minister of Women affairs has the habit of jumping into issues only cause they're trending so she can form Rambo on top.

If the woman had called the HOR member privately, given him a proposal of her sponsoring the girls to school or something, instead of the whole marriage thing, I'm sure there won't be this level of opposition. People in positions like hers should understand cultural nuances, and not just jump on issues because it'd make them look like they're working...she seems to mean well, but she's made things worse for those girls, they'd be married off faster and more stubbornly than before.

Every part of Nigeria are serious with their culture and religion. We take those things very serious. Let anyone talk rubbish about Oba of Bini and see the red eye of Bini people

There are many cultures in this country and many things are difficult to swallow for the next person. You just need to understand them and leave them alone. The people you are trying to "help" will be the first to attack you. Even within the South, there are certain customs yo will hear about and just look away

I remember in my NYSC and I hustled to get Polio vaccinaton from UNICEF office for the LGA. The LG chairman says if this will mean any man entering their house and violating " Ba Shiga" laws then they will rather choose polio

I told him that the Sultan of Sokoto has given a speech approving the polio vaccines and he replied in Hausa that let the Sultan do it in his own compound and palace and leave them alone

I had to pass the project to the female corpers and they gave the female corpers laws like No trouser, must be in wrapper, Must cover head etc

It is not a cultural issue per se.

The child rights act which protects the right of the girl child and actually does not support child marriage has been domesticated by 34 out of 36 states in this country . (Itā€™s only Kano and Zamfara that are yet to codify the law in their respective states)

Well I donā€™t know if Shariā€™a law supersedes the Child Rights act, but certainly this is not a cultural issue but one that bothers on the legality of the honorableā€™s actions.

For all it is worth , I will like the ministry to take the matter up in court and let them test the matter in a law court . Letā€™s see how it goes

Culture vs the Constitution, the law will always win. But, who's going to enforce it? Nigerians have proven over and over again to be ridiculously loyal to religious and cultural matters, most even respect those two things above the Nigerian constitution.

This is just like when the Supreme Court ruled that women must be allowed to inherit properties of their parents in the South East, but till today the women there are not allowed to inherit the properties of their fathers despite a ruling from the supreme Court ordering that. I'm sure you agree with me that there's nothing wrong with a female inheriting her father's properties, but you had to see the energy that south easterners used to insult the Supreme Court throughout that month for giving a fair and sane ruling.

@raumdeuter is right when he says the north isn't the only place with archaic and inhuman practices/ cultures. You just haven't visited enough places in the south.
If you visit some places in the south, you'd think you're in 1854.
The only difference is the northerners seem to make the news more often.

You might say the Law wins but the people who hold the culture dear will find a way around it. For example in the Nigeria there is freedom of movement, but when there is Oro festival and the people of Ikorodu refused to come out, or your business in Ikorodu, the employees refuse to come outside will the law go into their house and drag them outside?

Or say some places where they don't marry Osu, even if you outlaw it and assign Nigerian army to enforce, will you go and carry an Osu woman by force into the house of one that is not and use koboko to make sure they are married??

US where Polygamy is illegal, yet some people practice it, they will simply say the first wife is the legal wife and the one married in court, the other wives will just be "sisters" though sleeping together and bearing children. So how will the police prosecute them? or they will sit in the living room and watch which bedroom sister enters to collect gbola every night? Even if they catch them on top one another, they will claim they were cheating and the first wife has a forgiving spirit

Law is the easiest thing to change, changing the mind of he people regarding those cultural issues is the hardest

I read a novel written by an igbo in the early 50s some days ago when I was bored. One of the main themes of that novel was the relationship of the main character who wanted to marry a girl termed osu. Sad that more than 60 years later that inhuman practice is still active.

For the rest of your submission, that's why I said the Constitution will always win in a constitution vs culture situation, but which people are going to enforce it? The same damaged culture freaks? Lol.

If resource control is made a thing, nobody would have to tell people to get rid of cultures that impede their progress, and if they choose to hold on to those cultures they alone would be facing the consequences of those decisions. The marriage of these 100 girls would most likely be sponsored by oil money from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta or some other resource rich state, whether or not the people from these SS states agree with these cultural practices or not, their monies agree with it.

The harm certain cultural practices cause cannot be compared with the harm caused by others.

U are conflating issues on this one.

On the Supreme Court ruling on female child inheritance , once the Supreme Court has made such pronouncement, it is already the law. If today in the south east a female is denied her inheritance by her people, she can take the matter to court and the court will award the inheritance to her . If any of the family members thereafter goes against such judgement , then the court will hold them in contempt. They can be jailed for that .

To the child marriage issue , if a case on it gets instituted and it gets to Supreme Court levelā€¦. If the Supreme Court rules against child marriage, then it will form a precedent and going forward such judgement will be a reference point to fight future cases.

If I still remember my intro to General principles of law correctly , I think when it comes to customary laws/cultural issues thereā€™s usually what they call repugnancy test . i . e the court will have to test if a customary or cultural practice is not repugnant to natural justice, equity and that such practice is not perceived to be inhuman and obnoxious .

Child marriage is obviously obnoxious and inhuman when u consider it is one of the causes of serious medical conditions like VVF.

Yes everyone has the right to practice their culture, the problem is when practising their culture becomes a nuisance and threat to others

I am coming out of the supermarket and one northern beggar and her child were looking at me

Today there is a very large middle class northern population in lagos who have fled the mess created from their culture up north but who want to slowly import the same culture down south.

Fulani elite have refused to uplift their herdsmen brethen who take cows to feed on people's farms and who stab and machete people with impunity.

No one was really concerned about Islam or Muhammed until 911. For years after that it was open season on everything Islam. I say this because if Hindu terrorists suddenly decided to pass themselves an attack a western monument, their religion would receive the same scrutiny and condemnation.

We can say it is their culture but the culture is now backfiring on all of us.
