From a more detailed explanation,its because the more that lady blocks the groom,the more money she is sprayed or given,to make her succumb for the bride.
As explained the lady is a family member of the groom and per that culture the groom is married to the women in the family,so for an outsider to now get him as husband,the lady has to be settled monetarily.

There's one tribe in this Nigeria that the men wear wrapper like women.
