Obama was largely instrumental in making same-sex marriage legal. He however didn't campaign with it, as a matter of fact he either spoke against it or deflected the questions asked during campaigns. It's wasn't until the later part of his second term he became a lot more vocal. The point I'm making is that even for liberals openly supporting same sex marriage just about a decade ago wasn't a popular stance. On Donald Trump, he is not a conservative even though he got elected using a conservative platform. DT is a populist, but on same sex marriage he holds a liberal view just as he does abortion. If at all DT is saying anything just to get elected it is him parroting conservative statements not liberal ones. Most of his friends prior to him getting elected were liberal, he was popular in Hollywood, and was their darling before 2016. He donated to democratic candidates for the most part.

Hollywood like you rightly mentioned are part of the institutions I earlier inferred. I obviously can't mention every last one of them, but it is exactly what I am talking about. Movies are part of the tools being used to shape culture. It's why there hardly any movie today without LGBTQ representation. You see this even in children's cartoon.

I'm surprised you mentioned the bolded. How do you mean college students go against their institutions when it is the very same institutions that made them who they are. 97% of faculty in most universities are liberal. Like you literally can openly identify as a republican in most schools in the US today. There were protests across campuses recently about the war in Gaza and the students (mostly liberal) broke every rule in the books and no bore any consequence. Even when some were suspended it was revoked few days later. Faculty of some of those schools literally protested with them. Really surprised at this point you made.

Movies have an effect on culture but they don't in anyway shape it. Pretty Woman was a fantastic movie but we didn't see a rise in prostitution after it. Plus most movies are based on things we already see in society. The reason u see a lot of pride stuff in television is because that is the world we currently live in. They are not showing u anything u don't see everyday.

The universities and police were forced to step in because of outside noise. U had law makers saying government should defund all schools that have protests going on. It was not about being Liberal. It was about not liking the fact that tens of thousands of children are being murdered in Palestine as we speak. How many administrators did u see joining protests? U say faculties took part to make it seem more than what it was. U had professors standing with their students but they don't run those schools.

So let me get this straight, u deny someone their civil right, arrest them and u also want to kick them out of school? Students getting re-enrolled saved universities millions of dollars. Those were lawsuits waiting to happen. Remember the court order of law isn't the court of public opinion.

My point is support for same sex marriage over the last decade amongst US population has massively increased even amongst conservatives because of the influence of external forces I had earlier mentioned.

In a Pew Research center polling 60% of Americans opposed same sex marriage as against 31% who supported it. In 2015 over 50% of Americans were not in support but republican support still paled at 30%. Republican support however grew to over 51% by 2021.

On Trump's support for LGBTQ folks? The biggest support they regard is public identification and he did that contrary to what majority of his party stood for. Trump named the first openly gay person to a cabinet position against his party's position. Richard Grenell who is openly gay was appointed by Trump as Acting Director of the National Intelligence Agency. He was never confirmed because the democrats didn't vote for him and republicans didn't have the vote. Also, he is an executive and can't veto what is not before him. He doesn't make laws as he isn't a lawmaker. It's not like they brought an LGBTQ supporting bill in front of him and he vetoed it.

On movies, the conversation is frankly fruitless if you don't know how media shapes culture. The internet is replete with studies on the subject. There's no point arguing something backed up by experimental evidence. This study from Harvard is just one out of a gazillion studies on it.

Also, your argument that suggests that movies are only based on things we see in society is very funny. So Sci-fi movies reflect what society? Or dystopian movies? I could go on. Yes, I agree movies does reflect society but it also shapes it. 2 truths can coexist.

Th rise of LGBTQ plus people in the US across ages groups prove this. Those most exposed to media identify the most with it. I'll put up a chart from a research group as reference (note that the graph is only descriptive and not substantiating the point made)

Finally, my argument on faculty identifying with students during the recent protest and statistics on faculty who are liberal was only to give credence to an earlier point on how school, particularly college education influence liberalism. The subject and merit of their protest wasn't the point and I wouldn't want to go down that rabbit hole. I won't do the Israel/Palestine argument here. Not the point of our discourse

Also you are misrepresenting facts, students civil rights weren't denied. Everyone has a right to free speech and it's exercise, what they don't however have is trumping on other people's right in their bid to express their own. For instance, you have the right to protest, but you can't come to my sitting room and saying that is where you will like to carry out your protest. You'll be breaking the law doing so. This is essentially what happened here. Schools in the US have rules on protest and consequences for the same and these students violated them. They hindered other students from having classes, classes had to go online, they took over lawns and buildings. No other student cause would have been allowed this much leverage. None.

BTW we have to find a thread to take this conversation to so we don't derail this one.
