I will make it brief I live in Canada and currently working as an intern, so far I have been an intern for 7months working in 2 different hospitals. I will be ending next week. in my first placement luckily I got a Jamaican and working with her was the best thing that happened during my placement in the hospital. I will finish next week and I am in a different facility from the first one here I work with mostly white and Asian, so this girl came in yesterday and was all bossy. so today I went to see a client with her (normally I am a student and not supposed to do much) we went into the clients room and she started giving command with some racial vibes, I did all those (I want to graduate) while we were going back to the office she slam the door slightly on me (and that was it for me, I lost it) we went into the office and told her how I felt then she started whynin I told her Atleast say "fu***xn please when you need someone to help you with something or ask nicely) next she said I am not your friend I am your coworker she keeps whynin (she couldn't even apologize) she kept whynin and I told her" $#ut the fxxk up" she shut up and left the office and headed to the team lead that I used a swear word on her now I am not working tomorrow, I wanna make a request to be changed from the facility. I don't even know that to do before I engaged her there is this Nigerian student working with me there she told me the girl did same to her but she doesn't want to report cause she just wants to graduate me being stubborn told her if you don't talk to them you will never get respect from them after everything the Nigerian student called me this night that I should have seen how the lady started talking to her after the incident that they were all nice with her and I replied at least you are reaping the fruit of my labour now my case is been handle and the Nigerian lady said she not coming fort to bear any witness of abuse against that she wants to graduate and I felt bad we can't even stand together even in a foreign land I am left with battling the incident alone, I don't feel bad because I stood up for my self. my only issue was using a swear word. Now some Nigerian staff in the facility is telling me to keep the case low that since I used a swear word it could be a show that I will fight with clients(now I am kinda scared) but I told the Nigerian staff all I did was to stand for my self the truth will find its way. I stood tall finally the girl I had the incident with now saying that she apologize while we were talking (I didn't here nothing). I wasn't even given a chance to explain before I was sent home, reason was for using a swear word in the office. That's just it now I am here thinking. my supervisor from school wants me to write a detailed report I told him about the racism stuff like I don't even know how to write it racism is no longer like calling people black monkey but if you see it you know it right now I don't even know how to explain it all this because the will have to sign my school evaluation. I want to transfer from the facility because I have been there for 1 week and 5 staffs left saying it was toxic and only black people are sacked on the spot with out any caution which is wrong. so I have a feeling my team lead might be just waiting for me toward the end of my internship to fail me. pardon my bad grammar. |

Growing up in naija has a way of messing you up that you don't have the guts to stand up for your rights because we are used to a system where your really do not have rights and you have been used to playing the fool in those situations. You have started already, just stay strong through. Ask in naija communities if you could get connect to a naija lawyer or any lawyer that could freely advise you in this regard. |

First you are not decent enough to be in any work place. You think emotions are requirement for your work place! Grab some bunch of cookies in a farther-land. |

now my case is been handle and the Nigerian lady said she not coming fort to bear any witness of abuse against that she wants to graduate and I felt bad we can't even stand together even in a foreign land Your first and greatest mistake is expecting a Nigerian girl to stand for you. Besides, are Jamaicans not black again? ![]() |

Even though there are many really nice Canadians, don't be deceived, some of them are pure subtle racists. Immediately you noticed that you should have reported. You just have to see this through. I am sure they know the character of the other staff involved so just try to articulate the events properly. Don't be afraid to express yourself where they are. Most of them that behave that way are easily intimidated and cant stand confrontations. Wish you good luck. |

If you have a definite purpose in life and stick to it, you won't mind what others do, think or say to you. Even when insulted. People get angry easily and are rude when they focus, demand and chase after unnecessarily things . |

You could have won this care if you write a detailed report of she is abusing you racially, but instead you went to overreact, now she is using your words again you. A moment of calm in anger has grate benefits. The part if where you think the girl will stand by you seems funny. . |

In my assessment, you over reacted. Everyone hates am open confrontation in the west. Speak politely to people even if they seem aggressive and make a report later. The west is no place for gbas gbos. Now they've asked you to write a report and you don't know how to. You're a student, of course you'll be asked to do jobs. It would be nice if people said please but you already knew she's not one of those who say please yet you decided to blow it out into gbas gbos. You say she slammed the door slightly on you - this tells me this is your imagining. People either slam the door or not, if you're describing it as a slight slam, then it's probably all in your head. You must learn to calm down. Your colleague is smarter than you, and you're trying to drag her into your mess. Everything is not fight. My advice to you is find a way to keep this issue low and settle it with her without escalating things further. Reflect on it and see where you can improve. |

I believe everything you said word for word but you should have just ignored the act of "subtle racism". Sorry but she outsmarted you. "subtle racism" are always hard to prove most especially in work place environment. By the time you write your "detailed report", how do you want to explain the subtle racism? Because you can't weigh it against using a "swear word" in a work place. They will say you have esteem issues and moreover you should have reported to the teamlead when the issue started. Sometimes it's good to over look some things other people so far it doesn't result to physical harm. It helps to overcome so many obstacles. Sorry about the other Nigerian that said she's not coming fort to bear any witness against the Racist. She's only fighting for herself. Women don't fight for men, naa only man dey do all those kind mumu things |

You should know how things do If you don't have hard evidence, you better die the case except you want more trouble than you can handle. That's if contrary motions are not already in play. The last person you want to cross paths with is a white girl in your workplace who dislikes you. Better believe that she has had lengthy conversations with all the judges who are going to preside over your case ahead of of your trial. You're a minority, your African colleague is wiser in that respect. The segregation is systemic just so you don't have evidence. You better learn the game to win the game. |

Kingray10:No he didn't over react he wanted to standup for himself and others in a place far away from his own kind, a place far away from home. When I read through everything he wrote, he seem like the guy willing to standup for himself and others. But a work place environment, the others will throw you under the Bus. that's not just the right places to do that kind of thing. There is a team lead, he ought to report to the team lead even if nothing was going to be done. |

I want to Japa and go live inside cold where snow falls steady.. na one of the downsides be this, RACISM. They don't like you, first you should know this.. the lady speaking to you in that manner is to get you to react which she succeeded in doing, now you've been sent home and noone will probably listen to your side of the story. Maybe you should talk to your supervisor in school and explain that you reacted to the racist treatment meted on you, not that you did it deliberately. |

RealityKings:There are other civil ways of standing up for yourself. He should have reported the incident at least have a trail of evidence. Except the lady had repeatedly acted like this to the OP and he lost it this time. But from his write-up, it is the first time he is working with her. flokii:What in this shows a racist treatment? Some colleagues are naturally nasty even amongst same tribe and race. It is left to one to know how to deal with difficult colleagues. |

You'd have to calm down. I still remember my first year working as a nurse. I was supposed to attend to a lady, and she said, 'Are you a student nurse or something?' I replied, 'No,' and showed her my name tag. It took her a while before she allowed me to do my job. Then there was an older woman who said she didn't want a black person to attend to her. I reported the incident, and a colleague took over her care. You just need more self-composure. |
| Re: I Was A Victim Of Subtle Racism In My Workplace Today by iyatrustee(f): 9:44am On Jul 24, 2024 |
papikushz:You went overboard, period! First, you said as a student, "you are not supposed to do much". That notion is wrong, you are there to learn and be actively involved as much as your competence and skills allows. I may be wrong but you allowed this 'I am a student attitude' and her 'giving command with a racial vibes' affect your participation in caring for the patient you went to see. Secondly, she slammed the door slightly against you. Have you worked with her before this day? What if she didn't know you were following closely when she opened the door and let go of the handle? Except she has done this repeatedly, it wasn't enough to trigger your reaction. Then you told her " she should f**cking say please if she needs someone to help her with something, or she should ask nicely" you were a team in providing that patient care. Like she rightly told you, you are co-workers and not your friend. Everybody has a role to play, at times you use your initiative to take up what you think you can do within the team, other times you wait for a team leader to allocate duties. This is definitely no case of her needing help. The only person who needed help was the patient whose room you were in. My advice to you is to work on how you react to perceived discriminations because you will definitely meet loads of these in your practice. Swear words will only make you the aggressor when the chips are down. All the best! |

iyatrustee:Emotional torment was the aim of the racist worker. It worked on him... Can you prove emotional torment? No you can't. But that doesn't mean the lady didn't work racism on him |

iyatrustee:personally I am not a person that talks too much or react rather. I made a mistake and I realized it but I wondered how long to keep silent and being pushed around. so school policy is that we aren't suppose to be a replacement for staff. and believe me I have taken alot of racial slurs but being a Nigerian I am still getting accustomed to making a report. that is a new thing to me. my last place of work sometimes I felt abuse and over used, they overwork us as students. I try to ignore but for how long will I do that, lastly I missed my old supervisor who fought for us about this now I have a new supervisor who is new to the job and wants them happy. All I can say is I learnt my lesson. |

It's well but in this scenario I will rather be at Peace than be right because anytime you fight for your rights/ Justice, you trade your peace for it. |
