I am about to select corn to plant this august break in a swampy location and would love to hear from experienced farmers on the hybrids they have planted and the location. I am targeting fresh market and would like to know how many bags(GADO size) they have gotten from an acre with planting practices they followed to achieve their result................... lets rub minds |

betabread:Which variety did you plant in the end and how was the yield? |

O Abdullahi4u7:Suwan, my highest yield right now is 2.5 bags per alakpin (1/2 plot)....... Standard in the corn belt is 7-8 bags, but im not ready to pay for the input interms of fertilizer and original hybrid, maintenance of planter...... I hope to push the 4-5bags mark with my current inputs unchanged...... Be that as it may difference in output interms of cob volume is similar I wont advise u to plant this for grain output as its grain to cob volume is small plus it doesn’t fill its cobs well when population is very high |

betabread:So the 2.5 bags you mentioned is when it's harvested fresh? |

betabread:I like to ask you. From your personal experiences so far... 1. How many acres of SeedCo 510 does one need to cultivate to fill up a ponpon ? 2. How many acres of regular native maize seeds does one need to cultivate to fill up a ponpon ? |

Zwooks:Some regular native corn actually do better than all these hybrid Maize seeds. I have purchased corn seeds in the open market at Sabo in Ikorodu and my harvest was good. Both white and yellow maize seeds were purchased in derica measurements from an Igbo foodstuff seller. My harvest was okay. So, what are we saying? |

Redman44:Yes I agree. I witnessed this first hand myself. I am just trying to know the qty of maize harvested from a farm that can fill up a ponpon |

Your question also bothers on yield Averagely a bag measurement here swallows 350 cobs, but on rare occasions if cob are very big 280-300 D guys that do the tying say that if u really get giant cobs 200 sef and its filled up One thing is that if you get giant cobs, the guys tying are motivated as it means more money 4 them cos no matter how the buyer wants to stuff more corn inside the bag, it will just be giving way Once you get bumper harvest with big cobs, the practices of the buyers will favor you, if the bag is too heavy, it can even divide b4 getting to destination |

Finally maize cultivated with irrigation will yield way way better than rainfed maize..... If u start with the question of how many acres will fill a truck load, u hace started opening urself 2 errors |

betabread:Thanks for your civilized response to the guy. I don't know why so many Nigerians are always in competition about knowledge. Always viewing any sharing of knowledge as show off and get worked up that the person appears to know better than them. I didn't see you act as though you know more than others but the guy is already worked up. That's how they drive away people who can share knowledge on the platform. In the end there's nothing they know from which they are trying to compete. I've learned from the little you've shared. Thanks for sharing. |
