I am genuinely curious, how much is ideal to pay a live-in maid in 2024? Minimum wage was increased to N70,000 and I don't think it has been implemented. Considering this maid is housed and fed, how much do we think is okay? For people with GROWN maids, care to share how much you pay?

30k for a live in maid is too small na... In this 21st century.. Even shoe makers make more than that in a month. What if the maid was a family woman.. Will the end result of staying away from your family for a month be 30k |

70-100k sounds ideal |

Switinthemiddle:Lol. Maybe she should go learn shoemaking then. ![]() How much do you propose? WhiteIverson:Eweyyyy! This one has to be Regina Daniel's nanny o. |

pocohantas:A live-in maid does twice as much work as the maid who comes and goes so should be paid twice as much. |

I feel uninformed to comment realistically on this but I think the person saying 100k is closer to the amount I’d consider fair. Just based on everything that’s been going on with inflation and all that. But apart from the money aspect, I believe it’s important to outline what is involved in this role. Live-in maid sounds like a slippery slope to slavery where all your 24 hours is dedicated to the employer just because you live there. I can’t even imagine living at work because that’s what it is ![]() Ideally, there should be a daily start and stop time. Uninterrupted breaks & meal times. Personal days akin to weekends that are not being used to serve the employer even though it’s a live-in situation, vacation days for travel away from the employer. etc The same way we don’t work 24/7, we shouldn’t expect a live-in maid to work round the clock. I believe this makes sense but I’m open to reasonable counter opinions |

cococandy:You have spoken well. But even state governments say they don't have 70k to pay. Many people with these maids do not have 70k to spare a month. The ones that do can decide to pay less out of wickedness or for reasons they consider valid. I don't like the idea of a live-in maid. I prefer she has a resumption and closing time. Also a maid is different from a nanny. A nanny is one skilled to handle kids. A maid is for house chores and errands. Nigerians muddle both of them up. Same way they send their Personal Assistants to buy okpa and coke. I saw some women saying they don't allow their maids go to their villages during Christmas because they end up not coming back. I want to believe these maids are minors or they are not being treated well hence the fear of them absconding. You don't try to control a grown woman like that na. Are you not bothered she doesn't have a life outside you? My friend relocated and her maid, a 26yrs old lady wanted to follow them. I say haba!! Nne is there something else you want to tell us? 😂 |

pocohantas:prolly 60 -70k depends on job requirements |

Your friend must be treating the lady very well. ![]() Left to me, anyone who can’t afford to pay 70k (not the ones who are too stingy to pay it) but the those who genuinely don’t have it to pay, can’t afford a maid. It’s that simple. Every employer should be able to afford the federally mandated minimum wage or they can’t afford to have employees. Na dem wan live big man life on top another person’s sweat. And like you said the maid is likely to be overused for other duties not related to being a maid. Might as well pay them a livable wage at the minimum. But who’s going to regulate it? pocohantas: |

Indeed she was. The lady forgot herself and wasn't interested in life outside their home. Hmmm!! @ the highlighted. You have a point. But how much are we paid in Nigeria sef? If we are paid well from the top, then it might become a standard to pay everyone 70k and above. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by We4all: 10:58pm On Aug 13, 2024 |
It depends on the job terms, which unfortunately, are never spelt out. In most Nigerian homes, live-in-maids are basically slaves who handle more than 90% of domestic chores. Interestingly, when it comes to preparing meals, either the maid is sidelined or she is asked to prepare her "eba", whilst the rest of the families eat "balanced diets". At the end of the month, she gets a paltry 20-30K with the excuse that she is being fed and accomodated. This is seemingly wrong, but pathetically, most of these maids have no choice and will accept anything thrown at them. In my opinion, any houseowner that hands anything less than 50K to his/her maid is wicked and exploitative. I'd pay more, but don't subscribe to the idea of having live-in-maids. |

Switinthemiddle:How many Nigerians take home 30k monthly after deducting accommodation, transport fare, food, electricity bill, water, and other benefits a live-in maid enjoys from their salary? |

| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by cococandy(f): 10:18am On Aug 14, 2024 |
Tallesty1:That’s why a lot of people realistically can’t afford maids. They themselves are underpaid and they want to be employers on top of it |

WhiteIverson:Twice as much work doesn't equate twice the expenses. Beside, what sort of work will she be doing, that the one who doesn't live in will do? |

Tallesty1:Thanks for being realistic with this Except for those registered agencies and maybe those kinda maids that are somehow related to the Family, most wouldnt pay that more than 30k, because they feel living with them is an added advantage for her as they would prolly be assisting her with one or two In a real world tho, they usually pay them around 40k-55k and that was at December last year and of course, its usually on the Lagos Island I guess the pay differs with the recruitment medium, for Live-in maid taking in via Outsourcing agents, its usually around 50k. I have seen quite a few of them, but again, that was last year |

pocohantas:Since she lives with her employer, no more than 50k. Her employer feeds and accommodates her. 50k should cover the rest of her needs. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by Tallesty1(m): 8:51pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
cococandy:The situation is really messed up. People often need a maid because their jobs don’t give them time to care for the home and kids, but in the end, they’re underpaid, and the maid ends up suffering the most. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by Double0h7(f): 9:30pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
I’m short on context but a live in maid is nonsensical because house chores finish after dinner and dishes so the maid works from dawn to dusk. There’s no need to “live in “ but if they want to offer accommodation then that would be considered in the payment package. I would offer 50k in this situation. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by pocohantas(op): 9:39pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
Double0h7:No, it is not nonsensical. In states like Lagos where parents do not get home early enough, live-in maids ensure there is an adult in the home until they get back. 50k seems fair enough. 🙂 |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by Acidosis(m): 9:56pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
Tallesty1:But this is not a fair analysis. The live-in maid leaves her family behind just to survive. Some of them have children and they're forced to leave them behind. There's a reason off-shore and expatriate workers typically earn more than their counterparts (home country nationals) |

pocohantas:When do they get back?! That’s what I mean about context because it sounds like a maid/nanny role and I guess it’s dependent on the social norms of that community! Now I understand why the op is offering extra services for 30k!. It’s a sad condition all around. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by pocohantas(op): 10:13pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
Double0h7:Well, with traffic Lagosians get home late - 7,8,9pm, 11pm on some bad days. You know how the whole 9to5 and business thing is irrespective of location. It is rarely before 7pm for the majority. If you have a shop in a residential area, you will sell more in the evening when people close from work. So some of them will be open until 10pm. The one on my street, her kids would be there doing homework, wash uniform, have lunch, dinner. Omo, I dey pity them o. Lol! Don't mind the guy in the OP. |

| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by Double0h7(f): 10:19pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
pocohantas:Okay, so a maid is needed for the technicality of the job rather than the strain of the job. I stick to 50k because if you’re worth your weight in wages then you should have everything done by the time I get home. I don’t know who could afford those wages(50k) considering what you’ve just described, then 30k should be enough because I ain’t having an easy time so why should you 😂😂😂 |

| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by pocohantas(op): 10:36pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
Acidosis:I know them na. Elderly for me has to be way past children troubles. That feeling bad is how you find yourself making up. Bothering about her children's fees, health, academics...etc. It is too much for me, so I avoid them. So you have two carers for the girls? How are they faring? Nice to see you getting back here. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by Acidosis(m): 11:14pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
pocohantas:I completely understand. It's a lot to take on, and I get why you'd want to avoid that. It has always been just one carer, with family members. Family members have been extremely helpful but they need to get back to their own lives, so for the next couple of months, I thought it wise to have two. The poor sleep, workload will be unbearable for one person. The girls are doing really well. Na dem be my motivation. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by Nazgul: 11:29pm On Aug 14, 2024 |
pocohantas:30k isn't sufficient for a grown up woman considering how badly battered our naira is and inflation. Let's just consider the basic things she would need as a woman. Sanitary pads, cream, soap, makeup kit, toothpaste, wig/making of hair. This is minus clothes and savings which she's expected to have in case of emergency. I That money would certainly do her no good. Anyone who cannot afford to pay a live-in maid at least 70k shouldn't bother having one. Just tell your wife to bring one of her siblings to help out pending when she'll either get married or gain admission. |
| Re: Man Reveals What He Would Do If Paid N30,000 As A Live-in Maid by Juliearth(f): 2:07am On Aug 15, 2024 |
pocohantas:A live-in maid does more work than a commuter maid. It is not surprising to see them work round the clock with little to no sleep. Asides keeping the house cleaning and cooking, they also play ther roles such as nannies, errand runners and so on. Bearing these in mind, and also taking into cognizance that the value of the naira has greatly dwindled, a take-home package of 70k is fair. |
