Also since I'm currently in my final year in the university, I don't know how possible it is to change my name in school, I can't enquire now cos we're on holidays. I just want to know if anyone has successfully changed their name in school too and process it took.
Leave the school documents as it is.
You will always attach your Change of Name affidavit to your documents.Unfortunately, Nigeria is so messed up that what they don't understand becomes illegal. So you must deal with this, the good news is your offsprings will not.

As for the bank, you can visit them and take the necessary steps which will require your affidavit, but my guy, even me sef have submitted my documents, including marriage certificate for more than 3 yrs now and my banks stl uses my old name.

OK I have read your response

You have the right to bear your father's name or your mother's name as the case may be

Now if you want to bear both parents surname, you have to identify exactly which family you want to belong for life

If you want to be identified with your mums family, good and fine, his sibblings will have to be informed officially and they will embrace and welcome you by adopting you into the family

By doing so, you bear their names, have inheritance with them and have a share or assets and liabilities of the family

And you will settle down in their family as your original root

When you marry you bring her their she settles their have her kids their and they are part of the kindred of that family and that's how uoir own generations will go along and follow suit, whether you are still alive or not a

They will have to swore and affidavit and newspaper publication to that and you are now identified with them ab their son and brother

But if you know that you will return to your father's family at the end of the day, keep the name and don't change it.

Left for me, having understood your mind, I think you should go along yuoir mum family, if they will accept you as their son and brother

After all these are done, then you will use those documents to have a change of surname in national ID and international passport

As for uoir school, wait until you graduate before effecting any change
. The reason being that uoir mother families will seat and have several meetings before they will come to conclusion

I wish you good luck
oil dey your head. For this reply, i'm following you.

I pray this does not affect him tomorrow. There is this family Where their father, wanted contesting election back then, it was trouble, thanks to God and the man's brothers (cousins from the mother side), the people said no that the man is not from there, I'm talking of a place the man's father married from, got lands, settled, birth all his kids including the man, brought his siblings and they use there as their home town, with the bit of influence they have and what they brought to all that side, the people are still rejecting them.

I wish him well.

Oh thanks a lot, but can i use the new name for Masters? or PGD?

It's really annoying, I've been to the bank, officially changed the name, they even confirmed that the new name is what's on their system, so i just don't know why this is happening. I've been thinking of going to close all the accounts and reopen them with the new name

You can.

But I advice you continue with the old name for all your academic pursuit. Including your international passport if you wish to do it abroad please to avoid stress.

Your happiness should be that your kids will start on a fresh plate.

But landed documents/ properties and other non academic official documents should be in your new names.

You mean your maternal grandfather's name (aka, your mom's surname)??

Dumping your deadbeat dad's name for your maternal grandfather's name is absurd though. Are you sure your maternal grandfather, a man you probably do not know isn't another deadbeat or more (e.g., chronic abuser, drunkard, etc.)?

Your best bet is to pick up your mom's own feminine name (e.g. Ruth, Rebecca) as surname. But I'm quite sure you don't want this. Think.

After so many back and forths, i finally took the long awaited step to officially change my surname and I've never been prouder since i did. I usually beam with joy whenever I'm writing my name on any official form I'm filling ahh!

The only issue I'm faced with right now is the inconsistency in my bank account names on different bank platforms, i don't know if any one has also expérienced this, some bank platforms sometimes still display my old name whilst people are making transfers to me and that makes them wonder if the account is actually mine, I don't know why that's happening cos I've officially changed the name on all of them, BVN, NIN inclusive. I've called the CCs of all my banks and they don't seem to know what to do. Is there any fix for this?
Congratulations bruh!

Could you please highlight the steps you took in the course of changing your surname officially?

How were you then able to effect the name change on NIN, BVN e.t.c??

What/which document/documents was/were required to be tendered in the course of the name change??

How much would an individual have to spend in the course of the surname change??

Don't type too much details please. You could summarize the processes by listing them numerically.

I would really appreciate the information.

1. So I started with the court affidavit, this cost about N1,500 (Pls make sure to include the reason for the name change on the affidavit cos i had to re-do my affidavit cos some banks rejected the former cos of this, i used "due to family resolution"wink. If possible insist on the digital affidavit, with your passport on it. Fidelity Bank wasn't able to process my name change cos of this.

2. Then I proceeded to the NIMC office with the affidavit, you'd pay about N500 on their website (pls check their website to confirm price), I didn't pay anything extra. When you go there, no act as JJC, these people will bill you. After the process, they gave me a date to come for my new NIN slip. Pls make sure you go to the office with the former NIN slip with your old name, else, they might not attend to you.

3. After I got my NIN slip, I proceeded to publish my name on Vanguard newspaper, this cost about N4k then, the publication came out the next day. If you're a guy, jejely use an agent cos if you use Vanguard directly, them go wan frustrate you.

4. Thereafter, I went to the bank where I registered my BVN, the process was swift sha. I also visited my other banks for the name update. It was sha swift.

I had to type plenty cos the process is for a man trying to change his surname is tricky

Your blood is too hot, relax.

Sentiments aside, I would also not advised you to change your name at a stage where you are still getting important educational certifications. Particularly because you are male and this isnt common. Most places where this difference is observed would view it with an inherent degree of skepticism because you are male and it is not uncommon for people to be involved in certificate scams in Nigeria.

You just set yourself up for a life of having to prove the old and new names refer to one and same person. Home or abroad you will face this hurdle, and it is probably worse abroad because they have to decide if they can take your word for it as they will not place as much premium on your court affidavit abroad as they would in Nigeria.

I also see, you considered not just changing the last but also your middle name. Bro, if you did, you hit the jackpot, congrats.

I honestly get your plight, I won't lie to you, I'm sometimes scared too cos for sure this'd have some sort of effect but most times all of these fears are drowned by the excitement i feel everytime i have to present my official name and it's my current surname. I know what I signed up for and I'm ready to weather the storm come what may. Your concern is duly appreciated chief

Hi Maddict
Before now I thought I was the only one who would like to change their surname to their mother's name as an Honour to her, until I did a search online.

And then there your thread is, almost describing my situation except that my beautiful-soul mum is late.

Honestly, reading about your firm resolve about a discussion that may seem somewhat weird and your replies to questions, seems like you have the microphone-of-my-mind 👌🫡. I'm proud you already did what I was contemplating... something that can maybe make sense to others if they had been in that shoe.

Heavenly blessings to you, your future family and generations ahead brother🙏!

Well, an innocent child who didn't choose to be born but is in the world because of the procreative action of the father, couldn't have done any wrong to turn back on them nonexistently by the father.
It is naturally wrong and unthinkable.

He had continued with his new family ever since without looking back and I have had to move on in life as well without him. No too much hard feelings.
God bless us all.
