Inside the CNG conversion journey in Lagos

by Caleb Obiowo

A visit to Autogig International Resources Ltd. in Gbagada, one of six centers selected by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) for free CNG conversion, offered a chance to explore the growing interest in compressed natural gas (CNG).

With Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices soaring to over N1,000 per liter in some parts of Lagos, many vehicle owners are looking for ways to cut fuel expenses, and CNG is seen as a viable alternative.

But what does the conversion involve? Nairametrics provides a detailed account of the process based on insights from Obalanlege Oluwafemi Joseph, the CNG Coordinator at Autogig International Resources Ltd., and Shamil Chandra, Head of Operations at MBH Power Limited in Ikorodu.

CNG Conversion Process: A Closer Look

Joseph explained that the conversion process begins with an inspection to determine the vehicle’s eligibility. “Any vehicle with an internal combustion engine, which operates on the fire triangle—spark, fuel, and air—common to most two-stroke and four-stroke engines, is eligible,” he noted.

Once the vehicle is cleared, conversion takes one to three days. “The steps include mapping the vehicle for the best positioning of the CNG kit, installing it, and programming the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to ensure smooth operation,” Joseph added.

The process ends with a test drive to confirm the system works.

He clarified that converting to CNG does not remove the petrol or diesel engine. “The vehicle becomes a hybrid, capable of switching between petrol/diesel and CNG,” Joseph explained, highlighting the flexibility this offers.

How a CNG-powered vehicle operates

Once converted, a vehicle can switch between CNG and petrol or diesel. Joseph explained that the switch occurs after the engine starts, with two key modalities in the ECU.

“In the time-based modality, the switch happens within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle,” Joseph said. However, the timing can be adjusted based on the owner’s preference.

The temperature-based modality switches when the engine reaches between 20°C and 40°C, typically within a minute of starting.

Joseph noted that Autogig mainly uses the temperature-based system, while MBH Power Limited prefers the time-based method, which takes 15 to 30 seconds.

Both centers confirmed that CNG-converted vehicles automatically switch back to petrol or diesel when CNG is exhausted, ensuring the driver isn’t stranded.

The cost of converting vehicles to CNG

In Lagos, commercial vehicles can access free CNG conversions at the six approved centers under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi).

This initiative aims to lower fuel expenses for commercial vehicle owners. Eligible vehicles must be registered with the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), or be state-owned taxis and vehicles with commercial plate numbers.

For private vehicles, conversion costs vary. At MBH Power Limited, a four-plug vehicle conversion costs N1.3 million, while a six-plug conversion costs N1.5 million. Chandra noted that converting multiple vehicles at once qualifies for a N50,000 discount per vehicle.

At Autogig, pricing depends on several factors, such as the vehicle type, engine cubic capacity, and the size of the CNG cylinder, which ranges from 35L to 200L.

“On average, the cost ranges from N1 million to N1.7 million, depending on these factors,” Joseph explained.

Dispelling safety concerns: Is CNG safe?

Safety concerns are common among vehicle owners considering CNG conversion. However, both Chandra and Joseph emphasized that CNG conversions are safe when done correctly.

“CNG cylinders are made of reinforced materials designed to withstand extreme conditions, far more robust than traditional fuel tanks,” Chandra explained.

He added that CNG is lighter than air, so in the event of a leak, the gas disperses quickly, unlike petrol, which pools on the ground.

Joseph echoed these sentiments, stating, “CNG is much safer than PMS. Because CNG weighs less than air, it’s practically impossible for it to cause an explosion.”

He clarified that the safety features of CNG systems, including pressure release valves and automatic shut-off sensors, ensure safety in case of leaks or irregularities.

The only potential concern, according to Joseph, is pressure explosion, as CNG is compressed to 2900psi (200 bar). However, this risk is minimized by release valves that discharge excess pressure, particularly during refueling.

“CNG kits come with a gauge that allows vehicle owners to monitor pressure levels at all times,” he added.

Both experts stressed that regular maintenance is key to ensuring continued safety and optimal performance.

The cost of CNG gas: A more affordable alternative?

One of the key reasons for switching to CNG is its lower cost compared to petrol or diesel. With PMS prices soaring, CNG offers a more affordable option. At MBH Power Limited, CNG is sold for N480 per Standard Cubic Meter (SCM).

“We sell at this price because we buy from Falcon Gas at N450 per SCM,” Chandra explained.

Joseph added that CNG costs between N230 and N260 per SCM at other stations in Lagos. He also noted that CNG has a higher-octane rating than petrol, leading to improved performance, fewer carbon deposits on the engine, and better emissions.

Chandra agreed, adding that the cleaner combustion of CNG reduces engine wear, leading to lower maintenance costs over time.

While the upfront cost of conversion might deter some private vehicle owners, the long-term savings in fuel and maintenance make CNG a compelling option. Commercial vehicles, especially those eligible for free conversions under PCNGi, benefit even more.

Possible downsides and challenges of CNG conversion

Despite the advantages, CNG conversion presents some challenges. One key issue is the weight of the CNG kit, particularly the cylinder, which can weigh up to 65kg.

This additional weight places strain on the vehicle’s suspension system. To mitigate this, vehicle owners are advised to ensure their suspension systems are in good condition or replaced if necessary.

Another concern is the space the CNG cylinder takes up, typically in the boot of the vehicle, reducing storage capacity. This can be inconvenient for drivers who regularly need the boot for storage.

Additionally, there are fewer CNG refill stations compared to the vast number of petrol and diesel stations in Lagos. This can be limiting for vehicle owners who may have to travel farther to refill their tanks.

These challenges, while important considerations, are manageable with proper maintenance and preparation, and they shouldn’t discourage vehicle owners from making the switch to CNG.

Where to convert vehicles to CNG in Lagos

The following centers have been chosen under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) for the free conversion of commercial vehicles. However, they also offer CNG conversion services for private vehicle owners and organizations:

Femadec: Km 42, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Majek Second Gate Stop, Abiju Ibeju, Lekki, Lagos.

Portland: No. 1, Ojota Interchange Terminal, Bayo Shodipo, Ojota, Lagos.

Mezovest: KM 23, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ajah, opposite Kilimanjaro, beside Libmat Motors, by Abraham Adesanya Bus Stop.

Dana Motors: Dana Motors Ltd Kia Plaza, 117 Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Isolo, Lagos.

MBH Power: Km 5, Itokim Road, Ikorodu, Lagos (Inside Hypo complex, after Lucky Fibre).

Autogig: Plot 144b Gbagada Expressway, Gbagada, Lagos.

These centers provide expert services for both free commercial vehicle conversions and paid conversions for private vehicles and companies.

Outlook

As fuel prices in Lagos continue to rise, CNG is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative due to its lower cost and environmental benefits. However, misconceptions about CNG safety slow wider adoption, highlighting the need for greater awareness.

Vehicle owners should familiarize themselves with CNG system basics, including reading pressure levels and maintaining the system properly. Regular maintenance ensures that CNG systems remain safe and functional, without negatively affecting vehicle performance.

While the upfront cost of conversion might seem high, the long-term savings in fuel and reduced maintenance costs make CNG an appealing option for both private and commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicles, in particular, benefit from free conversions under PCNGi, making the switch even more advantageous.

There are too many CNG filling stations in Nigeria for me to list all of them, but these are lists of some of the major CNG chains in Nigeria (I can't list all the small companies).

Note: The information in the first part of this post is now out of date. It doesn't include many new stations that NIPCO set up (they are in the second part of the post).

NIPCO

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Division

In March 2007, NIPCO Plc made its presentation of its CNG project to the Inter-ministerial team of the Federal Government. In the same month FG accorded it’s approval to commence the proposed project at Benin City. NIPCO Gas was formed as Joint Venture Company between NIPCO and Nigerian Gas Company Limited (NGC) to implement the CNG project.

Currently NGC which is subsidiary of NNPC owns 55% of equity while NIPCO owns the balance 40% equity. NIPCO Gas has established 15 CNG running stations in Benin to provide an alternative for the Gasoline run automobiles. Presently it is in the process of constructing further 15 stations in and around Benin City. More than 5,600 vehicles have been converted to CNG for motorist in and around Benin City. As a result nations economy is strengthened as Gasoline imports are reduced.

Impressed with the impact of CNG in Benin, FG directed NIPCO Gas to expand its operations into other parts of the country. Hence a mega CNG station was commissioned at Ibafon, Ogun state, to convert automobiles to CNG as well as to supply nearby industries. Presently NIPCO Gas owns about 67 CNG cascades to ease CNG supply and distribution to industries in Ibafon axis. The Ibafon CNG station along with a city gas station has a larger compressing facility (12,000 scmt) for loading CNG to the nearby industries.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is CNG and why should I go in for it? CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas and is one of the most viable alternatives to “Petrol” i.e PMS.

Reasons for switching over to CNG, as an automotive fuel, are mainly:

Lower operation and maintenance cost: On mile to mile basis, CNG is drastically cheaper than petrol. Due to the absence of any lead or benzene content in CNG, the lead fouling of spark plugs is eliminated. CNG fuel systems are sealed, which prevents any spill or evaporation losses. There is an increase in the life of lubricating oils, as CNG does not contaminate and dilute the crankcase oil. Being a gaseous fuel, CNG mixes easily and evenly in air.

Environment friendly: The use of CNG as a vehicular fuel reduces vehicular exhaust emissions (Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbon) significantly. This in turn leads to a clean environment.

Flexibility and ease of use: The basic engine characteristics of a vehicle are retained while converting it to run on CNG. The vehicle therefore is capable of running either on Petrol or CNG at the flick of a switch on its dashboard.

What is the Fueling Process

The only major difference between a petrol vehicle and a CNG Vehicle is the fuel system. Natural gas is compressed to between 3,000 and 3,600 pounds per square inch (200 bar) and is stored on board the vehicle in cylinders installed in the rear, undercarriage, or on the roof. When natural gas is required by the engine, it leaves the cylinders, passes through a master manual shut-off valve and travels through a high-pressure fuel regulator located in the engine compartment.

The natural gas is injected at atmospheric pressure through a specially designed natural gas mixer where it is properly mixed with air. Natural gas then flows into the engine’s combustion chamber and is ignited to create the power required to drive the vehicle. Special solenoid-operated valves prevent the gas from entering the engine when it is shut off.

What about the vehicle’s power?

Petrol vehicles converted to natural gas are subject to a small power loss (about 10% to 15%) when running on natural gas; however, vehicles designed specifically to run on natural gas will have no loss of power and may even have greater power and efficiency. Natural gas has a 120 to 130 octane rating, compared with 87 to 96 octane rating of petrol.

BANNER ENERGY

AutoGas Conversions

Autogas in the world

Today, the most widely used alternative fuel for autogas are CNG and LPG, these fuels are economically and environmentally friendly in terms of prices. In response to increased demand for alternative fuel, we have partnered with one of the best Autogas conversion kit manufacturers and the best CNG compressors manufacturers for base stations to be introduced into the Nigerian environment.

Advantages of Conversions

Fleets do not have to wait until they are ready to purchase new vehicles to switch to clean, affordable propane autogas. Vehicles that are converted to bi-fuel propane autogas realize the same benefits as those that are OEM-dedicated. Propane autogas provides fleets the lowest total-cost-of-ownership, reduced emissions, tailored refueling strategies, and more uptime compared with other fuels. Not only is propane autogas a proven and trusted alternative fuel, but over 60 percent of the propane autogas vehicles that are on the road today were converted with a certified aftermarket bi-fuel system.

Convert your car to Autogas

A simple conversion could save you up to 50% on fuel costs

Banner Energy Limited has built the most and currently operates the largest network of LPG Autogas retail filling infrastructure across Nigeria, operated as BannerGas.

Converting your car to LPG is a relatively straightforward process, and involves simply installing a secondary fuel system in your vehicle with a separate tank and gauge for the Autogas fuel. There is no requirement for a new or replacement engine. Your car maintains the primary fuel system and will now be a dual-fuel vehicle, allowing you to switch between the two systems quickly and easily.

LPG is similar in its properties to fully vaporized petrol. making conversion technology relatively straightforward. There are various options available regarding the gas storage tanks on a vehicle, a popular solution involves fitting a doughnut tank into the spare wheel well so no space is lost.

Cars converted to Autogas are typically referred to as Dual Fuel vehicles' as the existing petrol/diesel tank is unaltered within converted vehicles, owners can choose at the flick of a switch which fuel they wish to drive on.

What's involved in an Autogas Conversion?

A robust and safe separate secondary fuel tank will be installed neatly in your car, usually around the wheel well, along with a second set of fuel injectors, which feeds the LPG directly to the engine. An electronic link to the engine allows the fuel delivery to be monitored constantly for maximum performance and economy.

A new and discreet status unit will be installed on your dashboard, allowing you to see fuel status, and to switch between systems, although Autogas will be the default fuel system. A new filling point will also be added to the exterior of the car.

LPG is a clean, safe fuel, and a conversion should always include the standard safety measures, such as AFL (Automatic Safety Limiter), which limits the fill, allowing the gas to expand as it should.

The initial outlay for the conversion can be paid back in a short time, with the massive savings in fuel prices. Your car when converted, runs much the same as with conventional fuel, but becomes a dual fuel vehicle. The upside of this is that you can easily switch to using petrol if the need arises. There are over 100 filling stations around the country - most of which are regular LPG plants stations with Autogas dispensers.

The role of BannerGas is to support the Federal Government of Nigeria in achieving its objective of ensuring smooth and quick transition to Autogas use by a critical mass of road users. BannerGas has successfully trained more than ten (50) technicians on auto-conversion training. BannerGas also converted Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources operational vehicles from Premium Motor Spirits or Petrol (PMS) to use Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as an alternate fuel

Facts about CNG you need to know

There are some important facts you need to know about how CNG can be of economic benefits to you and how your adoption can truly impact your environment.
Check out some of the facts below:

Is CNG safe?

CNG is lighter than air which makes it further safe to use. In case of a leak, it rises up and disperses into the atmosphere.
CNG has a high auto-ignition temperature of 540oC as against petrol’s 360oC which makes it a safer fuel than petrol.
CNG has narrow Flammability range, if CNG’s concentration in the air is less than 5% and more than 15%, the gas will not burn even in the presence of a spark.

Is CNG better than my petrol or diesel engine?

Cars running on petrol may appeal to you with better performance, lower initial costs and lower service costs but cars running on CNG can save you huge amounts of money in the long run.

Considering the dramatic fluctuations in the price of petrol and the slight fluctuations in the price of compressed natural gas, this is certainly a better option. CNG can provide better mileage than the same car that uses petrol.

Is CNG really cleaner?

Yes, CNG really is cleaner than petrol. While still a fossil fuel, it inherently has fewer carbon byproducts than other fossil fuels due to its chemical composition. By adopting CNG you are joining in making the environment and world better.

Does CNG have any harmful effect on an engine?

Unlike petrol or diesel, CNG does not contaminate or dilute crankcase oil, giving a new lease of life to vehicle engines. The absence of any lead content in CNG helps avoid lead fouling of plugs, thereby enhancing the life of your plugs.

One of the important benefits of CNG is that upon entering the engine in the form of a gas (and not as a spray or mist like other fuels), it doesn’t disturb the presence of lubricating oil in the engine, and reduces wear and tear. So you can happily have a CNG kit installed in your car to enjoy its benefits.

Is it expensive to convert my vehicle to use CNG?

Conversion of your vehicle to use CNG is not very expensive. Moreover the cost of CNG is comparatively much less than Petrol which makes it more useful and beneficial. The cost of converting a vehicle to CNG depends on its type and make.

The average fuel cost of running of vehicle is reduced by 50%-55% approximately after conversion to CNG at the present price of CNG & Petrol.

Why should I use CNG?

CNG is cleaner, cheaper, and greener than other fossil fuels. The Government of Nigeria commenced The Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG), which is poised to be the new fuel of choice, bringing with it great incentives for consumers to adopt it.
For more about the Presidential CNG Initiative, visit Pi-CNG website.

Re: Inside The CNG Conversion Journey In Lagos by naptu2(op):
TOTALENERGIES

CNG & bioCNG

CNG stands for compressed natural gas, which is a natural gas fuel stored at high pressure. It has been compressed to 200-250 bar and thus reduced to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. This makes it easier to store and to transport.

CNG fuel is particularly suitable for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, light trucks and buses. It offers trucks a range of around 550 km. CNG vehicles driving on biomethane emit significantly less particulate matter* and CO2** than conventional fossil fuels.

Production of biomethane

The renewable and non-fossil variant of CNG is biomethane or bioCNG. Biomethane is produced by fermenting biomass into biogas, which is purified and converted into grid quality gas. The biomass can consist of various types of raw materials, or feedstock, such as straw or tree bark and branches, or organic materials, such as food waste, roadside grass, sewage sludge and animal manure.

Biomethane to bioCNG

The biomethane, which consists of the same molecule as natural gas, namely CH4 or methane, is then injected into the gas grid. The natural gas is subsequently extracted from the grid and compressed by means of a CNG installation to be used as transport fuel. Biomethane can be blended or used up to 100% depending on availability and customer requirements.

Growing network of CNG stations

TotalEnergies strives to make alternative fuels that are cleaner and lower carbon available to as many users as possible. The acquisition of PitPoint in May 2017 has accelerated the growth of TotalEnergies' CNG network in Western Europe. Today, TotalEnergies operates more than 190 public CNG stations in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France.

TotalEnergies' CNG network overseas

In the Americas region, TotalEnergies, through its participation in Clean Energy Fuels in the US, operates close to 550 (bio)CNG stations.

In Asia, TotalEnergies, through its joint venture with India's Adani Group, operates more than 460 CNG stations today.

Product benefits

• Reduced vehicle emissions, such local air pollutants* and, especially when biomethane is used, less greenhouse gases**.
• Increasing selection of CNG vehicles available on the market, from passenger cars to heavy trucks.
• A CNG engine runs more quietly than a diesel engine, which is advantageous for city distribution at night.

TotalEnergies offer

• A large European network with TotalEnergies and AS 24 stations.
• A growing network overseas, for example in the US through TotalEnergies' participation in Clean Energy Fuels and in India through the joint venture with Adani.
• Renewable CNG, also knows as bioCNG or biomethane, offer possibilities.

TotalEnergies to set up CNG stations in Abuja and Lagos

TotalEnergies Nigeria PLC has announced that it is setting up two CNG filling stations in Abuja and Lagos, which will be operational in the first half of 2022.

November 8, 2021. TotalEnergies Nigeria PLC has announced that it is setting up two compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations in Abuja and Lagos, which will be operational in the first half of 2022.

Managing Director, Dr. Samba Seye, made the announcement while speaking at the 15th Oil Trading and Logistics (OTL) Africa Petroleum Downstream Expo 2021 theme, “Nigerian Downstream Oil and Gas Sector in Transition: Getting Set.” in Lagos.

Seye, who was represented at the conference by Charles Atiomohis, his advisor, said the development was part of TotalEnergies’ commitment to global transition with a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

According to him, the company’s production and sales mix would experience a significant change by 2030 as operations will constitute 50 percent gas; 35 percent oil and liquid biofuels; and 15 percent electricity, mostly renewable. He added that by 2050, the mix would be 40 percent renewable power, 40 percent gas and 20 percent liquid products.

He further explained that the development was also in support of the autogas scheme of the federal government, which was created to convert vehicle engines in the country from petrol and diesel to CNG.

Seye expressed optimism that more CNG stations would be set up if the government continued to initiate policies to deepen gas utilization and profitability. He also emphasized the need to reduce the cost of conversion kits and other sources of renewable energy in order to encourage more Nigerians to adopt the switch.

Also, Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Malam Mele Kyari said that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) was an enabler of midstream and downstream gas development. Kyari, explained that the PIA had created certainty around investment in natural gas with a clear fiscal regime for gas development. The Act provided for ten years’ tax holiday for investment in gas pipeline among other fiscal incentives.

CNG: 11 Plc Begins Plant Construction In Lagos, Ibadan

Chief executive officer, 11 Plc, Adetunji Oyebanji, has said the company has commenced exploration of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) market with the construction of facilities in Ibadan and Lagos respectively.

Oyebanji, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, said that feat was part of the company’s commitment to intensifying the usage of the product and support for the new administration to further boost the economy.

“We have continued to see improvement in all the investments that have been made in the last few years by upgrading the company to a higher pedestal.

He reiterated that the future of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), could not be emphasised in the growth and development of the global economy, Nigeria inclusive.

The industry, according to him, is ready to collaborate with the Bola Tinubu administration to uplift the country’s economy to an enviable height.

Explaining the essence of the oil and gas industry to the national economy, Oyebanji said his company, as a model, had invested massively on installations of LPG in 40 retail outlets nationwide.

Oyebanji said: “In terms of investment, we have done a lot as far as LPG installations are concerned.

“In several stations now, we are moving too close to 40 stations nationwide in our LPG installations, and we will continue to do this because we believe that LPG is the way forward.

“We have also invested in a new gas station at the toll gate, lbadan, the Oyo State capitaland the station is now operational.

“With its massive investments in LPG storage and distribution infrastructure , 11 Plc. Gas is well-positioned to maintain a dominant presence in the country’s LPG industry for a long time.”

Oyebanji said that the company had expanded its filling plants across the country, noting that it had already expanded storage capacity to 8,000 metric tonnes.

He added that the company had already started exploring the CNG market with the construction of facilities in Ibadan and Lagos.

“We continue to see improvement and all the investment that has been made in the last few years have been to upgrade the company and bring out more value.

“We are one of the six major petroleum products marketers in the country. Currently, we have over 250 retail outlets located in all 36 states of Nigeria.

“We are also respected in the industry for our high ethical standards and adherence to safety, health and environmental standards while playing a leading role in the promotion and sharing of best practices in the downstream sector of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry,” he said.

According to him, the firm has its fuel facility and an ultra-modern lube oil plant in Apapa Lagos, with a capacity of 300,000 barrels per annum and we are proud to be regarded as one of the most sophisticated in Africa.

Oyebanji said that millions of dollars had been invested in the company, resulting in significant improvements in all areas of its operations.

Recall that ExxonMobil sold its 60 per cent stake in former Mobil Oil Nigeria Ltd. to NIPCO Plc, the parent company of 11 Plc, on April 1, 2017.

Since then, 11 Plc has made significant investments in its facilities to increase productivity and meet market demands.

Stop Frustrating Establishment Of CNG By COCEAN – Avu Mechanic Village Warns Ukachukwu

Feb 14, 2024

Avu mechanic village in Owerri West Council Area of Imo State under the aegis of Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association, NATA has warned one Prince Jeff Ukachukwu to desist from frustrating establishment of CNG auto gas conversion training centre in Imo State by Chief Executive Officer of Cocean Oil &Gas.

The mechanics regretted that instead of Jeff Ukachukwu to use his connection as he claimed to encourage and commend Cocean Oil&Gas for bringing such innovative technology in Imo State by seeking for government collaboration so as to fast-track the project,he is busy lobbing his way to build lock-up shops in the area designated for training of mechanics for free of charge by a private investor.

According to them,”the CNG auto gas conversion training centre will enhance the mechanics as well as moving petroleum vehicles to gas. It is a welcome development. People are going to move petrol to gas. Abia State Government is currently funding Cocean 100% for the establishment of CNG in their State. All we need to do is to give Cocean moral support.

Speaking to newsmen on Monday 12th February,2024, the Chairman of Avu mechanic village,Comrade Ifeanyi Ugwoegbu regretted that prince Ukachukwu has continued to attack Cocean Oil &Gas who is currently building CNG Training Centre that would add value to the mechanics.

Comrade Ugwoegbu popularly called “Bjshop” flayed a media report that Ukachukwu was appointed Avu mechanic village developer by the State Government since 2018 challenging him to set the records straight with documents indicating his appointment as a developer.

He narrated that Ukachukwu came into Avu mechanic village through Imo State Chairman of NATA, Comrade Kyrian Nnadi who by all means wants to build lock-up shops on the land allotted to Dr. Chinedu Ndubuisi of Cocean Oil &Gas.

The Mechanic village Chairman recalled that they have confirmed through the office of Survey-General that State Government allotted parcel of land to Cocean Oil &Gas where it currently building CNG Training Centre.

According to him,”Jeff Ukachukwu recently entered into mechanic village through Kyrian Nnadi on mission of building his own filling station as well as building a hall worth of five million naira only for the mechanics for which he has refused to come for the review as demanded by the Mechanics.

I wonder why somebody is attacking the only private investor that is interested in bringing CNG to Imo State. Other states have gotten their own CNG except Imo State. This CNG Training Centre will benefit our mechanics. Jeff Ukachukwu should stop attacking Cocean on pages of newspapers. Full stop.

We have heard about the Newspaper publications from both Cocean Oil &Gas and Prince Jeff Ukachukwu, and we want peace in Avu mechanic village. Both Dr Chinedu Ndubuisi and Prince Jeff Ukachukwu are our people.Even,Dr Victor Mere, the former Imo House of Assembly member for Owerri Municipal was also one of the investors, Kyrian Nnadi and former Chairman of the mechanics brought to the mechanic village, Avu. what we need is to make sure that what ever is due for the mechanics gets to them while all our investors should equally come forward and do the needful to the Mechanics.

Cocean Oil &Gas land is not only the parcel of land we have in Avu Mechanic village. We have other parcels of land that need development”.

“Above all, what we have witnessed so far between Kyrian Nnadi and Jeff Ukachukwu is politics. No mechanic including Kyrian Nnadi have any right to allocate any land to any investor and we are condemning any such claim in its entirety, the issue of Kyrian Nnadi laying claims on the Avu mechanic village land is null and void as nobody has the legal document for Avu mechanic village except Imo State Government, even when we are privileged to have the official MOU between the Imo State Government and Avu,the host Community. I challenge both Jeff Ukachukwu to come to us for clarification”,he concluded.

In a swift reaction,Cocean CEO,Dr. Chinedu Ndubuisi recalled that Kyrian and his agents had severally destroyed his fence which he has instituted legal action against him. “The matter started from New Owerri Police Station to the Scorpion Unit of Imo State Police Command, Owerri. Kyrian did not appear before the court last week. I challenge Jeff Ukachukwu to provide appointment letter as Government appointed developer. I challenge them to call the name of the permanent secretary I connived with to get my land”,he stated.

When contacted via cellphone to ascertain his own side of the story,Prince Jeff Ukachukwu’s phone rang severally without response.

GREENVILLE LNG

Greenville has a network of LNG refueling stations located at strategic sites across the country. These facilitate movement of LNG fueled trucks of Greenville.

Greenville is the first company to introduce virtual pipeline of transporting LNG in Nigeria. The company does so by road tankers using LNG as fuel. These trucks can travel more than 1200 kms in a single refuel. Hence, the company has LNG refueling stations in strategic locations from where the trucks can be refuelled and go to remote locations of Nigeria. Currently the Greenville LNG refuelling stations are located at Rumuji in Rivers, Koton Karfe in Kogi, Benin in Edo, Sagamu in Ogun and Kakau in Kaduna. More such filling stations are planned by the company.

The Greenville Virtual Pipeline offers industrial customers and power plants located in sites away from gas pipelines to use natural gas economically. The virtual pipeline also has great advantages such as planning and transporting exact amount of LNG required by each customer over a period.

Virtual Pipeline System

Greenville LNG has brought the first LNG fuelled trucks into Nigeria to distribute LNG to our customers in all parts of Nigeria. The Virtual Pipeline System allows LNG to be transported to non-pipeline connected areas, especially the gas starved parts of Nigeria.

Using LNG as fuel enables an economic alternative for long haul trucking, this will make a positive impact of about 35% reduction on transportation & logistics costs in Nigeria. Our initial fleet of 300 cryogenic trucks have a capacity of 23MT each and can travel more than 1000 km at a stretch without refueling.

Greenville LNG launches first-ever Liquefied CNG station in Kaduna

by Omono Okonkwo

On Tuesday, October 24, Greenville LNG launched the first-ever Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas station in Nigeria.

This is according to a statement via the company’s official page on LinkedIn.

The Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas (L-CNG) station, situated in Kaduna state, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy landscape.

This pioneering L-CNG station, the first of its kind in the country, has been launched to tackle the persistent issue of fuel shortages and to bolster the distribution of natural gas.

This development is of great importance for several reasons.

First, it is crucial to understand that both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and L-CNG present highly attractive alternatives to conventional fuels.

They bring about substantial fuel cost savings, typically in the range of 15-20%, making them not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.

This shift towards cleaner and more economical energy sources is a step in the right direction for Nigeria’s energy sector.

The L-CNG station, according to the company, is not just a solution to current energy challenges.

It is also a catalyst for economic growth, particularly in Kaduna state.

By promoting the use of L-CNG, this initiative supports local businesses and revitalizes the transport sector, thus creating economic opportunities and job prospects in the region.

Future plans

Greenville LNG’s ambitious plan involves establishing 25 L-CNG distribution hubs across the country, which will serve as reliable sources of energy for fuel stations.

This concerted effort is a significant step towards making a sustainable and environmentally responsible future a reality for Nigeria.

It not only addresses the need for cleaner energy sources but also bolsters the nation’s energy infrastructure and local economies.

Backstory

In August 2023, the Tinubu administration shifted its focus to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a substitute for petrol.

This transition occurred after the removal of fuel subsidies, causing a significant increase in pump prices, which now exceed N650 per litre in some areas.

To address this issue, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) entered into an agreement with Nipco Gas Limited.

This collaboration aims to establish CNG stations throughout the country, offering Nigerians a more affordable and sustainable option for fuel.

The project unfolds in two key phases:

Intra-City Phase (Q1/2024): The initial phase includes the establishment of 21 CNG stations, primarily focused on supporting transportation within cities. These stations are set to become operational by the first quarter of 2024.

Intercity Phase (2024): The second phase, set to be completed in 2024, involves the creation of 35 CNG stations geared towards intercity transportation, promoting the use of CNG for longer-distance travel.

These efforts are further reinforced by an additional 56 stations planned to be set up by NNPC Retail stations across the nation. Currently, Nipco Gas is already operating 14 CNG stations in various locations across Nigeria.

Notably, they’ve successfully converted over 7,000 vehicles to run on CNG, demonstrating their commitment to cleaner and more sustainable energy options.

What an L-CNG station means

An L-CNG refuelling station is a place where liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transformed into compressed natural gas (CNG) for refuelling CNG vehicles.

The primary equipment needed for such a station includes an LNG storage tank, an LNG pump, a gasifier, a group of gas cylinders, and a CNG filling machine.

Greenville LNG Begins Fuelling Nasarawa State-Owned Luxury Ride Buses with CNG

Greenville LNG, a domestic gas liquefaction and distribution company in Nigeria, has started dispensing and fuelling vehicles with its more eco-friendly and cost-reducing alternative energy offering, compressed natural gas (CNG).

This is a heart-warming development for vehicular commuters and businesses in Nasarawa State, as it has practically upscaled hope for a more secure energy sourcing, utilisation and future in the state.

The CNG is now readily and cheaply available at its pioneering LNG/CNG gas station in the Nasarawa State Capital, Lafia.

With palpable excitement amongst state officials, commuters and transportation operators in Lafia, Greenville LNG has begun fuelling the newly acquired CNG-powered commuter buses of the Nasarawa State transport company, Nasarawa Luxury Ride with its CNG product at its Gas hub station in Lafia.

The Nasarawa State Government in its strong commitment to the industrial renaissance and development of the State through environmentally friendly businesses that operate, comply with and promote regulated global carbon emission protocols, had purchased Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses from JAC Motors to be used for both intra and interstate travels by the Nasarawa Luxury Ride transport company.

According to senior State officials in Lafia, reasonable and lawful considerations for sustainable human health and safety as well as reasonable environmental protection concerns are the drivers of the Nasarawa State Government’s robust campaign for transition from heavy and corrosive carbon emitting fossil fuels to the use of the cleaner, more environmentally friendly, cheaper, and also more readily available Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

With more interstate commuter routes set to be launched, the Nasarawa Luxury Ride transport company currently operates two interstate travel routes: Lafia to Abuja FCT, and Lafia to Jos in Plateau State with its new CNG-powered buses being cost-efficiently fuelled by Greenville LNG’s top quality CNG-dispensing facilities in Lafia.

It would be recalled that His Excellency Governor Abdullahi A. Sule had during the Nasarawa State Investment Summit which held in Lafia in May emphasised the State Government’s agenda to meaningfully transit from heavy and costly fossil fuels to the use of the cleaner, more affordable and readily available Greenville LNC-CNG alternative energy sources for the industrial renaissance and economic transformation of Nasarawa State. Sequel to the Summit in Lafia, the media had widely reported the visionary advice of Governor Abdullahi Sule to energy investors in the State the effect that “With the Greenville LNG Gas Hub Station now in Lafia, I would advise energy investors in Nasarawa State that instead of building a petrol station, they should now invest in LNG-CNG daughter Stations”.

The Governor had counselled energy investors in the State to take opportunity and advantage and begin to invest in the construction of Greenville LNG’s franchised daughter stations across the State going forward. The reasoning, it was reported, “is contingent on the fact that it is a technological reality as well as proactive commercial foresight to develop new energy businesses and related infrastructure to align with the now readily available, more affordable, and cleaner LNG and CNG offerings provided in the State by Greenville LNG, Nigeria’s pioneer domestic gas infrastructure developer.” Governor Abdullahi Sule had given the pragmatic advice during the Energy Roundtable discussion at the Nasarawa Investment Summit which was held at the Conference Hall of the Nasarawa State Government House in Lafia.

With understandable enthusiasm and excitement, both the State Government’s and senior Greenville LNG’s officials say the company’s now fully constructed LNG-CNG Gas Hub station in Lafia, even as it now operationally dispenses LNG and CNG to CNG-powered automotives, is due for official commissioning by the Nasarawa State Governor, His Excellency Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule at the soonest convenience of key stakeholders this August. As one Greenville LNG official puts it, “the energy transition to a more secure, cleaner and cheaper energy offering is now in Lafia with the Greenville LNG-CNG Hub station in the Nasarawa State capital.”

Greenville LNG is Nigeria’s private sector’s leading producer and distributor of LNG and CNG for the domestic market. With the company’s efficient virtual pipeline consisting of more than 600 specialized LNG-powered gas delivery trucks capable of driving about 1,200 kilometres and 1,800 kilometres without the need to refuel. Grenville LNG from its Rumuji Gas Plant in Rivers State and from its active Gas hubs, delivers sustainable and more affordable LNG and CNG energy supplies to every part of Nigeria. With Gas Hub stations in Rumuji, Benin, Shagamu, Koton-Karfe, Kaduna and now Lafia, Greenville is working progressively to open 25 Hubs to enable the delivery of cleaner, more cost-efficient and more readily available LNG and CNG fuels for homes, the automotive industry and other industrial concerns, and for independent power plants outside the national power grid across the geo-spatial and economic spectrum of country.

Asiko Begins Autogas Trial in Kano

We are excited to announce that we have kicked off an autogas adoption and utilisation trial in Kano to accelerate energy transition and support the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP).

The autogas trial project resulted in the conversion of two minibuses and five Keke Napep vehicles from a petrol-powered engine to a dual fuel (LPG and petrol) engine. The conversion was done over two a 2-week period, with no financial obligation or expense incurred by the vehicle owners or operators.

The autogas filling station is a significant part of the project and was built to enable a successful trial and study. The autogas station, housed within the premises of our gas facility in Bompai Kano, can dispense LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) to facilitate convenient refuelling for the converted buses and Keke Napep. Through this trial, we expect to significantly lower operational costs for vehicle owners and operators by up to 40%.

The autogas trial project was lauded by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, who expressed his excitement about the initiative. According to the Emir, who was represented by Ma’ikagama Kano, Alhaji Bello Idi Wudil, the people of the ancient city of Kano will key into the autogas trial because it is an affordable and cleaner alternative to PMS.

Also at the event was the chairman of the National Gas Expansion Program in the office of Petroleum Gas, Dr Muhammad Ibrahim, who described the initiative as an auspicious and epoch-making one.

This autogas trial and its expected benefits underscore Asiko’s commitment to empowering its host communities and building a network of clean energy solutions for a more sustainable future.

Light at the end of the subsidy tunnel: How Nigeria can leverage Autogas for a more sustainable tomorrow

The recent announcement by the Federal Government (FG) to halt the subsidisation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as Petrol or gasoline, has left many struggling to come to terms with this new reality. Faced with soaring petrol prices and an expected rise in the cost of living, the average Nigerian, who survives on less than $1 a day, is first in line to feel the short-term impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

Today, the price of petroleum retails at around 500 Naira per litre at all filling stations operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), a sharp increase of about 200%, which has, as expected, catalysed commodity inflation in almost every other sector. Transportation costs have now nearly doubled in the country, an unsurprising effect for a country dependent on petrol for our residential, commercial, transportation, and industrial operations.

However, in the face of this seemingly daunting climate, the Nigerian government has an opportunity to ameliorate the financial impact of the subsidy removal. This opportunity is gas!

Up until now, the subsidy on petrol resulted in a paradox where imported petrol was sold cheaper post subsidy than domestic gas, leading to large quantities of gas being flared.

The potential of gas in Nigeria’s current economic climate – an Autogas perspective

Asiko, with a view that the removal of subsidy was inevitable, made a strategic decision in 2021 to invest in converting standard petrol vehicles to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Autogas. We converted several standardised vehicles (Toyota Corollas, which were popular with ride hailing services like #Uber and #Bolt) to investigate the competitiveness of LPG Autogas over subsidised and non-subsidised PMS on a Naira per kilometre metric. We evaluated two OEMs and deployed the converted fleet of Corollas in groups (urban and inter-state). Over a 12-month study period, Asiko determined that for all groups:

• Autogas is competitive against non-subsidised petrol;
• Vehicles running on LPG Autogas can save up to 30% on fuel costs (more on Autogas Natural Gas).

In addition to Autogas LPG, there is also Autogas CNG. There is enormous potential in this area as well, and Asiko’s early investment in CNG truck heads has proven economically viable against equivalent diesel units in our fleet, with cost savings of over 50%.

What lies ahead – Opportunities and Possibilities

With the end of the subsidy era, now is the time to intensify our collective efforts to revolutionise the energy landscape by turning our attention to gas. In addition to being a cleaner, more reliable and eco-friendlier energy source, it proves now to be more pocket friendly than gasoline based on today’s market realities. Adopting Autogas (LPG or NG) for transportation is a win-win for the Nigerian government and people.

The time to move to Autogas (LPG or CNG) is now!

Jigawa to establish 27 CNG conversion centres, says Gov Namadi

Governor Umar Namadi has announced plans to establish compressed natural gas conversion centres across the 27 local government areas of Jigawa.

News Agency of Nigeria • September 26, 2024

Governor Umar Namadi has announced plans to establish compressed natural gas conversion centres across the 27 local government areas of Jigawa.

Mr Namadi said this in a statement by his media aide, Hamisu Gumel, on Thursday.

The governor, who spoke at the inauguration of a petrol filling station, Safa and Fresh International Limited, on Wednesday in Dutse, said the CNG centres would establish a partnership with the company.

Mr Namadi said the establishment of the CNG stations would reduce fuel costs by 60 per cent, adding that it would provide a significant relief for state residents.

He said the investment initiative aligned with his administration’s 12-point agenda, aimed at job creation and economic development.

While highlighting the state’s public-private partnerships (PPP) policy, Namadi urged the company to explore the Jigawa Invest platform for more insights into the policies.

“Your intention to establish CNG stations in all 27 local government areas is a welcome development. The Jigawa State Executive Council has already resolved to set up CNG stations to alleviate the hardship caused by the rising cost of petroleum products.

“We are ready to partner with you in this initiative and offer you the majority shareholding of the company. Our goal is to ensure that the right things are done for our people, and we will support you in every way,” Mr Namadi said.

The managing director of the company, Ibrahim Yusuf, restating commitment to boost investment in the state.

He said the company would also train 100 youth as technicians in each of the 27 LGAs in the state.

Installation of CNG pumps required for new licence, NMDPRA tells marketers

by Bunmi Aduloju
May 15, 2024

The federal government has directed marketers to include compressed natural gas (CNG) pumps in retail stations nationwide.

Farouk Ahmed, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), gave the directive during a meeting with suppliers of petroleum products on May 14 in Abuja.

“We will require that CNG add on to be put in point of the petrol stations. And the new applications will be one of the requirements that you must have a CNG add on in your petrol station,” he said

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Ahmed said potential retail licensees would now be required to establish a CNG point in their filling stations before receiving final approval from the government.

“We also discussed the CNG revolution and our collective effort to ensure that we reduce the burden on the economy by having an alternative to PMS which is very costly especially due to exchange rate fluctuations and instability,” he said.

“We are looking at gas because we have it in abundance, we have over 200 trillion cubic feet of gas. All we need is to harness the industry to produce, invest and be good for the consumer and CNG is the way to go.”

Ahmed said the addition of CNG at petrol stations would provide easy access to consumers.

“But of course, we have to address the supply side and we are working with the producing companies; our sister agency, NUPRC; and NNPC Limited as well as Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN) to ensure that the product is also available at a competitive cost to the consumers,” Ahmed said.

He added that the regulatory authorities plan to lessen the burden of the importation and consumption of petrol.

“We explored the possibility of converting the energy requirement of retail outlets and depots by the stakeholders (here) going into solar. But of course, there is a high entry cost and we have discussed that and it is going to be in phases,” Ahmed said.

“By doing so, we will reduce the demand for diesel in terms of powering our generators by utilising solar options.”

On May 13, the federal executive council (FEC) said all new vehicles, generators or tricycles procured by the government and its agencies must be powered by CNG or solar.

‘WE’LL NOT SET PRICE FOR DANGOTE REFINERY’

Ahmed said the federal government would not set the price of petroleum products from the Dangote refinery.

“NMDPRA will not determine how much it is sold or how much you are buying. It is their own decision to go to Dangote refinery and purchase, and for Dangote refinery to determine the price they sell,” he said.

As a regulator, Ahmed said NMDPRA is more interested in ensuring the nation is well supplied.

Obviously not every CNG company or station has a website. There are many that I can't post about. That's why I am not posting about CNG-Gold.

I have no problem with the CNG project.
The problem is giving out free CNG conversion to Commercial vehicles in hope of them reducing transportation fares.
That would never work.
They won't reduce their fares even if CNG is free.
The best bet would have been to subsided the process or grant tax waivers for the companies to manufacture the parts locally. That would reduce the costs significantly.
How can I be converting a 2004 car to CNG with 1.5mil. how much is the car worth even?

Govt should revisit this CNG project.
