Has Anyone In Nigeria Married Someone With The Same Last Name? by jesudara459(op): 8:19pm On Oct 27, 2024
Does anyone know of, or has anyone heard of, people in Nigeria marrying someone with the same last name? I recently met someone who shares my last name, and I’m curious if others have had a similar experience. Is this considered unusual or even bad luck? I’d love to hear any thoughts or stories!

I have an old course mate who got married to someone with the same surname. The only thing she had to change in her docs was her title: 'ms' to 'mrs'. Lucky lady

Yes.

My two guys for university shared same surname. They're from the same state but different local government. After school, one married the other guy's sister. She gave birth yesterday to their 2nd child.

Wow thanks but was it not weird? Like how did they put it in their wedding invitation banner? The two families with the same surname? Wish I could meet the person to speak with them and ask them questions.

My cousin wanted to do it some years back. Every older person in the family warned that they were related, the courtship was a cursed union. Like someone possessed, it made sex with the girl sweeter as he was ready to die on her matter. Everyone decided to keep quiet at the end. The lack of attention made him lose interest.

Oh, yes. I had a classmate from the University who got married to his then fiancé about a decade ago. She shared the same surname with him.
I used to tease them saying that the marriage should have been consummated on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as a merger, or takeover. cheesy
I haven't heard from him in a while but I believe that they're doing well.
So yes, these things do happen. smiley

It's funny you're asking if it's unusual OR even bad luck.

I've read of a couple who are both professionals and they have been married since the 1980s. They both had the same surnames before getting married and both are of Yoruba descent. So, it's pretty obvious that this is NOT unusual and certainly NOT a taboo or bad luck among the Yoruba folks as long as both are NOT from the same hometown after lineage or ancestry investigations have been carried out by both families.

Nice thread.

Thanks for sharing that story! It’s good to know this has been done before with no issues. I agree, as long as the families are not from the same hometown after the necessary lineage checks, it shouldn’t be a problem. I appreciate the reassurance. Glad you enjoyed the thread!

I almost married a man with the same surname as mine some years ago, but his frenemy cousin sister, who supposed to be my best friend then, stood solidly against it because I wasn't a Catholic. They were staunch Catholics.

But the wicked frenemy went ahead and married from Anglican Church, after ruining my relationship with her cousin.

The guy told me his mother also bears same surname as his dad. So, it happens.

Mine is diff. My mum and her sis married into the same surname, diff villages.
And I and her kids resemble so much so people who don't know me very well end up thinking she is my mum as I am always with her kids. We bear the same surname so you will never guess.

What is the big deal? It will even favor your potential wife; considering she won't have to go through the hassles of changing her name officially.

Honestly, most Nigerians worry over things that are insignificant. Focus more on building a solid marriage and forget about frivolities.

Awww really sorry to hear that. Guess it wasn’t meant to be. Trust you moved on and you’re in a better place now. Good things will come.

All things work together for those that love God, jare. Same cousin of his later introduced another friend who was a Catholic and they got married, but their marriage crashed within a year. He came back, but my body and heart couldn't accept him. If he had acted like a real man and fought for the relationship we had, he wouldn't have gone ahead to marry someone else on the basis that I wasn't a Catholic! Very funny excuse.

I kicked him out and erased every of his memory.

I've long moved on, jare. Far better than I would have been with him.

Thanks.
