OGA do not say what you don not know and shut up .which culture shock pass the one you are facing in Nigeria It’s easy to say baba! To you, going abroad is like making it in life.. a 32 year old can definitely school, but I am simply telling the guy as it is. He will definitely face some psychological pressure, it depends on how he handles it. So it’s better he knows everything at hand before he makes that move. The cultural shock is there too. He has spent all his life in Nigeria and moving to a new culture to start life all over again, it’s tough! And the country he goes matters too, probably some countries in Europe might help a bit, but I won’t advise countries like UK, and the Americas for that kind of journey[/quote] |

RodgersAkpafu:Ok, that explains the discrepancy. By the way, I was speaking about the U.S. context which is quite a bit more liberal compared to the U.K. I also heard(actually from one of my professors that came from the U.K.) that after a certain age is reached that it is impossible to enroll in any university there. Is that true? |

Gerrard59:Chief Gerrard, I want my wife to try the English teaching path in Japan. How easy it is securing a job? What is your advise for us? Thanks |

damble:Search on Google about "English teaching job websites". Apply to as many job postings as possible. Be serious with jobs that offer visa relocation as some of these jobs are strictly for those in Japan. At the same time, those with relocation packages tend to pay more, are more competitive and have tougher screening processes. State that you are a native speaker of the English language. Your competitors are white Westerners who are loved by students, recruiting companies and Japanese in general. When asked what language Nigerians speak, state English as many don't know. They know of South Africa, but not many, especially outside Tokyo know of Nigeria. Further state that Nigeria gained independence from the British in 1960 just like Ghana, South Africa and Kenya. The education system uses English from nursery to university/tertiary levels. English is the only official language. You have to beat the Filipinos in this round before defeating white Westerners and black Americans. Your CV should be minimalistic: two pages maximum and include only relevant information. Don't put your local government or sex. You can put DOB, but please for the love of whoever you worship, ensure it is the same as your other documents because that is what the employer and immigration bureau will use. Any discrepancy raises eyebrows and will stain the name of Nigeria in the eyes of the employer. Upon getting the job, check for housing and maybe transport allowance. If you get both, congratulations. But one is especially the former is usually added. Both are standard perks for jobs here. If the employer will pay your health insurance, brilliant! But this is rare for English teaching jobs. That perk is associated with a standard teaching job. P.S. An English teaching job is not a "standard teaching" job. You work as an Assistant Learning Instructor alongside a Japanese. You are not a teacher in the eyes of education companies or the government. A standard teacher works in private schools (Japanese is the language), public schools (Japanese is the language) and international schools (both Japanese and English are the languages). An English teaching job, in my opinion, is a WAEC tutor role. Anyone can do it provided the person speaks good English. It should be a means to an end, but never the end. If you want to live longer here and enjoy the country, aim to change career roles within two years maximum. The visa stage is straightforward as the issuance of the COE (Certificate of Eligibility) means 9 out of ten, you get issued the visa. |

Gerrard59:Or, coming to Japan for masters will be a better alternative? She holds 2.2 B.A in philosophy (2011). Is it possible for her to get admitted to schools that teach in English with affordable school fee? Does Japan offer post graduate work permit? Does Japan allow dependents to come with student visa? Affordability of school for masters is key... Thanks |

damble:The course is the issue as there are fewer universities that offer art and humanities programs in English. This does not mean there aren't any, but there are few and mostly the top universities in the major cities. So, this means higher living expenses. From next year, the same major universities will likely increase their tuition fees, especially for foreigners as the govt has removed the threshold. International students are usually the first group to have an increment. Japan is especially good for STEM programs and business programs to an extent as those are where the opportunities are plentiful for Africans and there are scholarships for our people in those areas. Not so much for Philosophy. The year she graduated is another issue as questions would be asked and her CV would be assessed to know how. For major universities, grades are also important. So the quality of her experience will be assessed. An alternative is to pursue a program in Education related programs, but again, most of such are in Japanese, not English. There is a post-graduate work visa, but to fully harness it, it is important to search for jobs before one graduates (this is a tradition here). If one does not find a job before graduation, there is a six month visa to extend the job search. If after this period, still no job, another six-month visa is available subject to terms and conditions such as money for sustenance and evidence of job hunting. Even the first six month require evidence of job hunting, but it is not strictly applied as the second. Both will require a letter of confirmation from her academic supervisor. If there is no job after this one year, the chance of the visa to be renewed is very low. Another thing, masters here is between the academic supervisor and the student. So even though it can be a taught masters, approval from a professor whose research aligns with the prospective student is mandatory. Dependants are allowed subject to the main applicant's evidence to support the livelihoods of the intended dependants. Japanese universities are way more affordable than their Western counterparts. P.S. Target national universities, not public or private universities. Please go through this thread's pages as I have explained the various steps: https://www.nairaland.com/2655545/japanese-visa-travelling-japan/40 Everything is in that thread. The onus on searching for further explicit information not included in that thread is on you. Best wishes! |

damble:My pleasure. The teaching route is more common than I expected. However, means to an end, not the end. The graduate school route is an entirely different scope. |

Gerrard59:Good evening great Gerrard59, I just saw where you mentioned East Asia on a thread now. I want to ask if Taiwan and Thailand are good countries to consider for english teaching jobs too? And is it easy to move to Europe from the east asia countries? I am just thinking about what is feasible to achieve, Thanks |
| Re: Can I Still Apply For Admission Abroad At The Age Of 32? by Gerrard59(m): 5:04pm On Nov 29, 2024 |
damble:Taiwan is way better than Thailand. It is not that Thailand is doing badly for itself, but there are fewer economic opportunities aside from remote work and advanced business consulting for most non-South East Asians let alone a black African. The non-South East Asian foreigners you have in Thailand are independent. They don't participate in the country's economy. The other group are foreigners employed by global firms in Thai operations. So, you have European, Japanese, Chinese, and American firms employing their nationals to man the Thai operations. How many Nigerian or notable African firm has a facility/company/major office in Thailand? I don't think English teaching sells there. But please do your research. Just that I don't see Thailand come up in English teaching jobs. If your wife has or can have reputable teaching certifications, use this website to search for jobs: https://www.schrole.com/jobs-for-teachers/ As for Taiwan, the market is too small, and I have this feeling most of them already speak English to an appreciable level. Amongst East Asians, the Japanese have the worst English level. The Chinese (across everywhere they're based) strive to learn and speak better English. Koreans come next. The English teaching market is more lucrative in China. However, there is an explicit favouritism for white people. That is, parents prefer to have a white person to teach to their children. The blacks who are favoured are African Americans and Black South Africans. This applies across East Asia - East Asians LOVE White people. The Chinese just make theirs obvious. It is possible to get an English teaching job, but as with every economic opportunity, it is going to be extra-competitive. Maybe the Cold War between the West and China might tilt the overall perception of parents to prefer black Africans over white people. But the jury is out. The easiest to get is Japan. From there on, one can move elsewhere, including Europe or America. Oh yes! With a residence permit in Japan and stable earnings, moving to the West isn't hard. If I want to get an American visa as it is, it would be so easy. |
