jedisco:Lol, it's hardly been missed. The huge migration figures have made headlines since the ONS release and Keir has had to make repeated pledges to radically reduce both legal and illegal immigration. It was even the main topic in PMQs today. This Labour government is similar to Obama's administration. They both present more liberal than their Tory/Republican counterparts but behind the scenes they preside over larger deportation records and Starmer has to prove to be very strict on immigration in order to keep Reform at bay. Labour has quietly resumed deportation flights that had been paused in the last government and has already deported a record number of migrants. I don't think the public is going to forgive or get desensitised to these levels. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/oct/19/uk-deports-record-number-of-nigerians-and-ghanaians-in-single-flight https://www.gbnews.com/news/keir-starmer-three-record-breaking-flights-over-600-migrants-deported-nearly-10000-removed-since-election |

Zahra29:Quietly? Labour was crowing about it from the rooftops. Those were asylum seekers whose claims had failed , overstayers and the likes. None of those removed had a valid right to stay in this country. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. What's wrong is trying to remove people whose asylum claims hadn't been processed. That's illegal. |

To be honest, I find all this immigration talk to be boring. I am more interested in the nearly 3% public sector payrises, the money being given to improve public transport(I ve seen a few new buses in my town) , the reforms Rayner is pushing in housing( no more nimbys!) This might be anecdotal but I ve noticed a reduction in ambulance arrival times. This is what people can feel and I m happy labour is going ahead with their plans. Never mind the farmers and other wealthy people who whine about taxes. My heirs will pay IHT at starting from 1 million and they will not have 10 yrs to pay it in. Unlike the farmers who start at 3 million and have 10yrs to pay it in. They also have their hands out for subsidies . Where do they think the money ll come from? I don't have a lot of sympathy for them, I m afraid. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 2:20pm On Dec 11, 2024 |
missjekyll:Erm no, not initially. They were encouraged to start promoting their removal figures to demonstrate progress and show the public that they were towing a stricter line on immigration than the Tories, in spite of the Tory rhetoric. |

Zahra29:I m sorry but you are not in my messages. I just don't promote deportations on principle. I refuse to play reforms game. Let's crow about other more important things . |

| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by missjekyll: 2:49pm On Dec 11, 2024 |
Zahra29:For reform, every problem in this country is caused by immigration. Not the rubbish government policies,it's all immigration. Not able to see GP? It's not ARRS which prohibits GP practices from hiring GPs, it's immigration. NHS on its knees? Immigrants! Not budget cuts. Housing shortages? Immigrants! Not decades of not meeting housebuilding targets... They are like a one trick pony. Unfortunately many people believe them. Just like with brexit. They are a real danger |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 3:03pm On Dec 11, 2024 |
missjekyll:What does the bolded mean? I'm slightly confused about this post. In your previous post you said that there was nothing wrong with removing people without valid right to stay. No one here is crowing about deportations, except Labour who is trying to promote their much stricter stance on immigration. They're not just about public sector rises, housing reforms and other liberal policies you might want to cherry pick. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 3:08pm On Dec 11, 2024 |
missjekyll:I don't disagree with the bolded. Time will tell if they are have more than one trick, but it's certainly true that they are posing a real electoral danger for Labour. It's not just Reform bdw. Tories and even Labour also share similar views and policies on immigration although Labour words it more gently. Just like the Dems, they still want to remain the party home for immigrants. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by missjekyll: 3:23pm On Dec 11, 2024 |
Zahra29:The removals were absolutely the right thing to do. But I did not promote them as I do other labour policies. People voted for the improved quality of life promised by Labour. If immigration was the top issue, reform would have had the landslide instead as they have ,by far,the most extreme take on immigration, don't you think? I am supporting Labour to deliver a good quality of life for the man on the street. That way they can see that bad governance was the problem all along not immigration. Reform Limited will lose much of its allure. |

jedisco:Reduce wetin! Dey play. I keep hearing that even care workers now are applying for their dependents and getting approved. Just heard one today and another friend who just got his COS as a support worker, so could be true that jobs are now available while the whining about numbers continue. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by missjekyll: 6:29pm On Dec 11, 2024 |
Thegamingorca:MSM? she keeps scoring own goals by refighting old battles. I think she may be a labour mole ...either that or the tories were so horrendously bad that they cannot point 1 finger without 4 fingers pointing straight back at them. At least she is getting paid...and has elevated her CV. |

Thegamingorca:Erm maybe she is?! She’s been poor for past 3weeks. As weak as KS is, she still can’t deliver a KO. Also the optics of her fighting on immigration (as a Nigerian anchor baby) who argued in favour of it as Business Secretary is very bad. |

Kemi Vs Nigeria(ns) 🥊 lol Kemi Badenoch has stood by her comments about Nigeria after the country's vice president criticised her remarks. https://news.sky.com/story/kemi-badenoch-not-the-pr-for-nigeria-and-stands-by-comments-on-country-after-criticism-13271713 |

missjekyll:Let's also not forget, the people talking about conservative financial wastage..... Spending £562 of tax payers money on office chairs, £1200.00 on folders to carry official papers..... etc etc etc https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/12/10/labour-ministers-spent-taxpayers-money-decorating/ |

Goke7:Hehe... more gist is needed. Do you mean those who picked up care roles after the last change can apply for dependents without meeting the salary treshold? Overall, I think Kier Starmer would bring down numbers not because of what he says but because of his disposition. E.g with education, lower number of international students (who subsidise locals) means local students have to pick up the bill if their numbers are reduced. Significantly reduced income from migrant workers mean a higher tax bill both of which he has had no issue effecting. The difference with Starmer is that he is looking to deviate from migration-focused narrative of recent PMs and does not want immigration to the buzzword of his government. Oddly, the best thing for migration would be a government promising huge tax cuts and freebies for everyone. Once the economic realities of such hits, migration becomes inevitable. Reason why I'd rather Reform wins than be a significant opposition |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by jedisco(m): 7:56am On Dec 12, 2024 |
I'm slowly beginning to like Starmer. Seems like a no-nonsense guy. He is setting himself a good bar, looking to drive the narrative and set areas on which the media should hold his government accountable. He would sure be roasted if he fails to meet most of the targets he set for himself while in government. To me, two things stand out- 1. No mention of migration. This is the first in a long while 2. 1.5 million homes.. hehe ![]() @Missjekyll's what do you think of these 'milestones'?

jedisco:Honestly am surprised don’t know why I keep hearing this or maybe they are applying under another job code you know there will always be loopholes people can explore It’s obvious the PM is telling the public that if you want net migration to go down then get ready to pay more bills and taxes and he’s pushing them towards that direction no matter how much they protest or whine. The guy no get time, na Operation collect your money! Again that bbc article you shared weeks ago comes to mind. If e easy make dem run am. We are here watching and enjoying our popcorn or chips 😜 |

Zahra29:She “says it like it is”… Unless it’s the greatest social crisis of the decade in which people are being mobbed in the streets, in which case she has nothing to say…or heinous comments by a top Tory donor, in which case she only says mealy-mouthed platitudes before rushing to diminish the seriousness of the situation. Indeed. |

Lexusgs430:I agree they should let her be. I find the whole attâche thing nauseating. NIDCOM and that woman at the head of it are shameless and they’re making us all look bad. I don’t know of any Nigerian that went about telling people oh do you know the new Conservative Party leader is a Nigerian? There are Nigerians in the top echelons of many global and national institutions - she’s not the highest profile and will not be the last. My issue with her is that if you want to disclaim Nigeria feel free to do it and do it entirely, not that every time you open your mouth about Nigeria it’s to say something that paints Nigerians in bad light. If you don’t want to be good PR for Nigeria, then don’t be bad PR either. Àbí ? Saying that, I recognize that it's her lived experience to express as she sees fit, so she can carry on, and we will also continue calling out her hypocrisy. |
