I know you're not dumb,
so you must have noticed what I am about to share. One time, after an intense marathon, Mama Khadijat once told me that it is the little things people ignore that I often capitalize on to make a difference. I never thought much about that statement, I prefer she used her mouth for something better than that.

But thinking about those words, I have finally realized that indeed, other than swallowing the rod containing the Corpus cavernosum, she can also use that mouth for a lot of things.

In all my journey through the rough terrains of life, here are some of the simple psychological tricks I have noticed:

1. When talking to someone, always start a sentence with their name especially if they had just told you their name e.g "Matthew, you're really good at what you do." Use this when you're making a request or giving a compliment.

2. When you meet someone "important " for the first time, do not be the first to reveal your opinion on politics, religion, etc. Let them be the first, say less but enough to show that you're fully interested in the conversation.

3. If you don't know the best way to engage someone in a conversation, subtly imitate their body language. Smile when they smile, nod your head slowly as they talk, and use phrases like "yeah," "exactly" and so on. I know you must have been doing this but this simple trick pushes them to keep leading the conversation as you carefully study them.

4. This is related to number 3. A lot of people listen to react or respond, don't do that. No matter how powerful the urge to respond or interrupt quickly is, listen and allow them to talk as much as they want. People love being listened to, it massages their ego—this is why they automatically assume they're winning a debate because their voice is the loudest. Let them talk. This trick can also be used to draw someone closer, they would begin to feel free to open up things to you.

5. The power of silence is underrated. When they expect you to speak, take a pause, keep them anticipating your next words — this would make reexamine whatever they want to say. This silence allows you to dominate a conversation or situation without saying much.

6. First impression matters a lot, the human brain is a one minute man in that aspect. People easily paint their own perspective of your personality in less than a minute of meeting you. This is why people assume someone with a "hard face" is wicked or that a guy wearing a suit and glasses is a responsible corporate worker.

7. Our perception of life is derived from the different influences around us. To understand someone, just try to find out where and who they grew up around, their favorite shows and movies, etc.

8. Colors are powerful and send subconscious messages we do not even notice but are influenced by them. Everything around us have a strong influence on the way we behave and think.

9. Compliments are seen as something positive but they can be used to cage someone. Most people do not do this intentionally but the power it holds is incredibly potent. If you want someone to behave in a certain way, give them a nice compliment especially if it's connected to their fears and insecurities. However, ensure it is not done often, it must be done intermittently.



I know you know all of these, but where the powers lies, is the ability to use this knowledge consciously to pave way for yourself. But be careful not to go beyond your limit.
