Why the Big Deal About the Shariah Arbitration Sitting in Oyo?

It is baffling to witness the Islamophobia that often arises from certain quarters in the southwestern part of Nigeria, especially when it comes to issues like hijab or, more recently, the Shariah arbitration sitting in Oyo. This reaction seems unwarranted, especially considering that the Nigerian Constitution explicitly guarantees freedom of religion and association.

Why is there such uproar whenever Muslims try to exercise their constitutionally protected rights? Why should my wife, sister, or daughter be subjected to hostility for simply wearing hijab—a personal and religious choice that is not forced upon anyone? Let us be fair and just!

WHAT IS THE SHARIAH ARBITRATION SITTING?

The arbitration panel being unveiled in Oyo State is not a Shariah court but rather an arbitration sitting, akin to other family arbitration bodies such as those in Lagos or the well-known Agidigbo arbitration ("Kokoro Alate"wink. The only difference is that this arbitration panel will operate according to Islamic principles and will cater exclusively to Muslims.

This initiative poses no threat to anyone’s rights or beliefs, as it is entirely voluntary and limited to Muslims. Such arbitration panels are entirely legal and protected under the Nigerian Constitution.

MISCONCEPTIONS DEBUNKED

1. "It’s a Shariah court."
- No, it is not a Shariah court. It is an arbitration panel that provides mediation and resolution of family disputes based on Islamic tenets.

2. "It’s a new idea."
- This is false. Arbitration panels guided by Islamic principles are not new in Oyo State. Similar panels have existed in Ibadan, Ogbomoso, and other parts of the Country for years.

3. "It will Islamize Oyo State."
- This is baseless fear-mongering. The panel is exclusively for Muslims and does not affect anyone outside the faith. It does not impose Islamic principles on non-Muslims or interfere with the state’s secular governance.

WHY THIS SHOULDN’T BE AN ISSUE

Muslims in Oyo State have every right to exercise their religious beliefs and establish such an arbitration panel. It is designed to benefit society by preventing divorces, mediating family disputes, and fostering harmony within Muslim homes. These are positive contributions to the community, not threats.

We must be fair and respectful in our dealings with people of different faiths. Just as other groups have their own platforms for conflict resolution, Muslims in Oyo deserve the same rights without undue criticism or fear.

Let us uphold justice and constitutional rights by supporting peaceful and constructive initiatives like this arbitration sitting. It is a step towards strengthening societal harmony and respecting the diversity that defines us as Nigerians.

LIES!

1. Arbitration, based on Sharia law but not on Nigerian law is a deviation from the Nigerian justice system, therefore it is wrong.

In fact, it is deceptive & misleading that you call it an "arbitration panel" instead of "Sharia Court of Arbitration" which it actually is, so one way or the other, it is a Sharia court, where they hope to commence the usage of Sharia Law in the South West.

2. Similar Sharia courts of Arbitration established in any part of the South West must also be disbanded. There is no Nigerian act that supports the enforcement of law outside the provisions of the Nigerian judicial system! If Christians also begin using Mosaic Law, eventually forcing Muslims to obey in majority Christian communities, most of you denying the extremism in Islam would be the first to report to the government and protest.

MURIC and the Islamic Council were still protesting against Bishop Oyedepo's Air Strip, something the government didn't contribute 1 kobo to, yet you are all out here saying people shouldn't protest! Never!

3. Stop lying. The eventual aim of Sharia is to enforce Islamic law. I have seen videos of people in Afghanistan beheading their wives because of the Islamic law that allows it.

‼️ Was Deborah a muslim? She was stoned and burnt to death for telling people not to discuss religion in a school WhatsApp group, but because she mentioned "Mohammed" you guys murdered her! We know what a muslim-dominated society looks like, we don't want it!

We have a freedom of religion in Nigeria, yes.
So also we have a freedom to do legal business.
We have also the freedom to consume any legal commodity or food we desire.

If the above is so why then are the Sharia police destroying people's businesses in the north, Nigerian citizens within their rights, selling legal things like alcohol.

If the selling of Alcohol or the barbing of a certain hairstyle offends you then don't do it. Don't consume it but allow the Nigerian citizen do their businesses as you are not their customer.

If you insist and molest their businesses because they are in your region, then you are not being fair and square and they also have the right to curb your excesses in their own region.

YORUBA LAND IS ISESE LAND. Do you know the Ojude Oba festival is an honour to the king in Ijebu for allowing islamic immigrants in Yoruba land to practise their islamic religion in peace?

Then all of a sudden, because of the liberty Yoruba land has granted u guys with ur arabic & jewish religions to practice, you now want to turn landlord on the soil of our forefathers? Is Yoruba a joke to you?

Will you allow Isese court in Kano or in Saudi? Answer: no. But you now think you can establish sharia in Yoruba land?

We know the islamisation agenda for the whole of Africa. It won't happen on Yoruba land, the lands of our ancestors: the land of Ogun, Oya, Yemoja, Osun, Ogun, Obatala, Orunmila, Osanyin, the great Esu, Ayelaala, Ologun, Sango.

Yorubas will never lose their culture or tradition to the guise of religion which is a subterfuge attempt to divide the bonds that bind tribes together. Warfare comes in different forms, this is just another art -- AND THE GALLANT YORUBAS ARE VERY WELL ALIVE TO THE THREAT!!

Yorubas are one of the few african races that held onto their culture while a lot lost theirs -- that's a sign of sophistication and many tribes are seriously seriously jealous. Yorubas: be bold and proud

ILE YORUBA A GBE WA O.
