I understand your frustration!

Firstly, a 200% rent increase is quite steep. Here are some steps you can take:

Negotiation
1. Review your lease agreement: Check if there's a clause that stipulates how rent increases should be handled.
2. Talk to your landlord: Schedule a meeting to discuss the rent increase. Be calm and respectful.
3. Propose a compromise: Suggest a more reasonable rent increase, citing market rates or your financial constraints.

Seeking Assistance
1. Tenant associations or unions: Reach out to local tenant organizations for guidance and support.
2. Housing counseling agencies: Non-profit organizations that provide free or low-cost housing counseling.
3. Local government agencies: Contact your local housing authority or consumer protection agency.

Legal Action
1. Consult a lawyer: If negotiations fail, consult with a lawyer specializing in tenant-landlord law.
2. File a complaint: If your landlord has violated the lease agreement or local laws, file a complaint with the relevant authorities.
3. Court action: As a last resort, take your landlord to court. Be prepared to provide evidence and witnesses.

Other Options
1. Look for a new place: If the rent increase is unsustainable, start searching for a new apartment.
2. Consider a rent subsidy: If you're eligible, explore government programs or non-profit organizations that offer rent subsidies.

Remember to document all communication with your landlord, including dates, times, and details of conversations.

Take a deep breath, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

If you're in Lagos state, the court is your best bet!
Taking your landlord to court over rent increment, IMO, is a d u m b move. What happens after winning the case? Continue to live peacefully in the same house with your landlord? Just pray never to meet a c r a z y landlord. If they don't frustrate you physically, you will definitely face greater spiritual problems.

It's super illiteracy on your part to not know there are legal loopholes that exist that make tenants stay 6 months if the landlord doesn't do the right thing...

In the case of the OP, if his rent is almost expired and the landlord hadn't issued him a quit notice 6 months prior, he can spend 6 months. If they fail to reach an agreement on the new rent, he's obligated to issue them a quit notice 6 months prior, meaning that the duration can be used by the tenant...
The six months period is paid for by the tenant. There is no free period.
I rent out quite a few premises in Abeokuta and I do have to correct quite a few people on the matter even educated ones.

That guy is a fooooool … I was talking about Asaba …. The fooooool was telling me about Asaba and it’s environs…

Yeah I know Warri, Sappele and some other towns are cheaper than Asaba ….

Asaba is gradually becoming more expensive than Abuja and Lagos

Hold a meeting and negotiate with him as a group of tenants. He may listen and reduce the rents. Things are hard for everyone now.
If its Lagos is it not the same landlords that were beating drum of support for tinubu promising to reach PO a lesson immediately tinubu assumed office all of the Lagos landlords increased house rent....

Nigerian law stipulates that rent must not be increased by over 50percent in a year.
The tenants have a right to sue.
Sue and win him on this ground and he will turn round and sue you for repossession. A landlord is at liberty to repossess his property after giving the tenant the required notice even if the tenant agrees to pay the rent.

That is more than 100% increase in the rent. It's quite unlawful, but let me ask, did he make any renovations? If yes, the law stipulates he can hike the rent by more than 50%. If there was no renovations done, then he is not legally allowed to increase the rent by more than 50%.

So feel free to take him to court, and you'd definitely win. You can follow the Facebook page: The People's Parliament to learn more on issues like this

Lolz, even you dey do tribalism. What if the OP didn't even vote or is apolitical? What if he's JW? What if he's anti Tinubu? Or you magically think rent and other expenses increase only for people that like the president?

No renovations was done on the building. The house was built 6 years ago, so there is no need for renovations.
