Should A Pastor Return Money Given To The Church By A Corrupt Politician? by Daejumong(op): 7:26am On Dec 31, 2024
Should a pastor return money given to the church by a corrupt politician?

Some years back, a high ranking politician donated millions of dollars over a period of time to help the ministry of one of the biggest pastors in Nigeria. The pastor never queried him even though he knew it was beyond the scope of his salary!

Few years down the line, the politician was convicted of massive corruption and had his properties confiscated and bank accounts frozen!

The pastor does not believe he needs to return the money to the government! He believes it is God’s blessings and since he never knew it was acquired illegally, he has no need to give it back . The pastor in question is one of the biggest in Africa and worldwide!

Do you think the pastor is right? Is this similar to spoils of war in the Bible? Is this a case of the sinner’s wealth being stored for the righteous?

Proverbs 13:22:
"A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous."

No. This is because the pastor cannot prove that those politicians stole the money.

The God that cannot be deceived decides how to handle the politicians.

And people like you who always to point accusing fingers at politicians and pastors are always more corrupt and down with worse behaviour. Until you begin to give plastic tag to each politician to identify them as convicted and corrupt by you, why should pastors be worrying identifying whom your corrupt politicians are? So, far your hate of a politician makes him automatically corrupt based on your mentality, then be ready to always provide a plastic-tag for them for pastor to identify them as labeled by you when they visit pastors. You better go and look for better work to do to make you busy, Dangote can't be wasting his time like this on frivolous talks and be rich. If politicians are corrupt, join politics to correct it yourself. We are tired of mere talkative without action, march your talks with action

Maybe or somehow no. In some cases it's mandatory. Context is required.

Kumuyi maintained that it is pointless for a sinner to pay tithes and offerings in church.

“If you are a sinner here, God does not need your money. All the money you are giving in this church does not get to God. You are just wasting your money

Gov fayose paid an Edo lawyer mike ozekome N75m legal charges for defending him against buhari govt in court while dasuki was under probe. The Efcc turned around to sue ozekome to recover the N75 million which it considered part of the N4billion dasuki gave fayose from office of the NSA account. The bank record was correct but EFCC lost the case against ozekome because ozekome stood his ground that he was paid for a service offered and he is not a law enforcement agency empowered to probe clients income nor does he have the legal right or resources to vet the source of the fund.

Under a sound justice system, unexplained personal gifts to a pastor private account for no services offered could make the pastor an accomplice in a financial crime. But if paid to a publicly available church account which is designated for receiving public donations, the church would have a strong defence line especially if there is a history of public donations recieved and if the money doesn't get re-wired back to the politician or their proxy or no evidence of dubious chats/messages between the parties.

Morally, the church is not obliged to reject. There is no biblical precedence. Money were only rejected in the bible from those who want to buy the miracles or miracle working power of God with their money. As long a pastor makes it clear that giving money to church is not their ticket to heaven, the pastor commits no offence. The pastor has no way to tell if a donated money was stolen or earned by the said politician. Look at it this way, you have a shop selling bags of rice, a yahoo boy comes to buy a bag of rice from you and intentionally dash you small extra money. Will you be committing a sin by accepting his payment knowing fully well that it's fraud money? What about the tip? Will you reject it? Or is it a sin?
Yahoo boys go to a hospital and after being attended to, they parcel thank you money in envelope and share for the doctors and nurses, is it a sin? Is it morally wrong to collect?

Though gift blindfold the seer but the truth of the matter is no one can mock or deceive God, what a man sow he shall reap.
Cain was rejected before his offering was rejected, no matter what you bring to church would be blessed the reward (positive or negative) comes from God

Which pastor can do that?
That is why Nigeria is what it is today.
Most men of God are afraid to speak the truth because of what they will eat.

Yeah. RCCG did it one time when a lady who stole Govt funds and used some to pay for her tithe. They asked for a compilation of the funds and sent it back to the government.

I’m aware of this and I’m not an RCCG member.

A pastor is just a mortal like you and could even have more flaws than you do. So why not allow him to make his own choices and face the same judgment as everyone else?
Re: Should A Pastor Return Money Given To The Church By A Corrupt Politician? by ClassicMan202(m): 12:24pm On Dec 31, 2024
It all boils down to the burden of proof..

How can you prove that the money donated was proceeds of corruption?

The politician can embezzle 10 billion dollars but decide to pay his tithe from his salary.

In this case, is the money corrupt or not?

So God cannot tell his servant that the money is stolen or tainted with blood of people who suffer and die because of the corruption ? Any god that keeps quiet to corruption money is a corrupt god !

If a pastor has the right to collect money from corrupt politicians, what about the money from ritualists? I am of the opinion that pastors should reject money from dirty sources as cash at hand but anyone can deposit or transfer the money to the church bank account.
Re: Should A Pastor Return Money Given To The Church By A Corrupt Politician? by ArcSEMPECJ(m): 12:25pm On Dec 31, 2024
Depends on what the Pastor did with the money...
If there is a purpose, God can use any means to fulfil his purpose...

Where the anger of God will rise upon the Pastor and Church is where the Pastor embezzled the money as well, used some for material gains...

Inshort the highest Wisdom of Man, is the greatest foolishness of God.. so let God judge his people his way.
