What did you do after finding out?
You should have taken it back with the involvement of police and court threat since they intentionally hid all these major problems from you and presented the car as faultless
Used cars are bought and sold "AS IS"

There's no warranty for used cars, the onus is on you to carry out proper inspection before purchase

There's no way one can "intentionally hide a major fault" in a vehicle like you claimed, you either got carried away by the blings and bought out of excitement without inspection OR you went along with either an unqualified technician or incompetent one or both

Your intimidation tactics will most likely backfire, don't even bother

I fixed it and the dealer paid for all the repairs. The car has sound engine nonetheless everything else is perfect.
Did you get the dealer to do that with police arrest and intimidation? grin

Most of these guys don't even realise most dealers will sort these issues for you out of zeal to keep a client.

I believe what happens is when people fall into the hands of hungry middlemen, they experience lots of bad things

From my observations, what most people call "dealers" are infact nothing but agents and middlemen only out for a quick bucks. Most real dealers will try their best to please and retain a client

How much and where is it located exactly
Chriswazo:
Contact me if you are interested in buying Acura MDX 2011, I used the car when I came back Nigeria last year and since then, is been parked at my house, with maintenance services.

Am selling cos am not even sure of coming to Nigeria this year, so no need to park.

Price is very ok and car is of course in precinct condition, I bought it myself directly in USA.

Unfortunately the car is only available for anyone in the East, especially Aba or Owerri because I can not get to ask someone to take it to Lag or anywhere else since I don't have anyone to trust with it. Except the buyer is ready to travel go check it out.

Contact me for further enquiries and details.

PS: this is not a distress sale o, am even discouraged to sell it sef, but if offer is good, y not.

95% of people selling their cars is because it's faulty. They've repaired and repaired and are tired of repairing it so they'll just put it up for sale.

That's why I tell people to avoid Nigerian used cars cos na problem you de buy. They money you'll spend in fixing it would exceed the amount you spent in buying it.

Go to apapa those cars coming in from the ship, negotiate with a dealer, pay and carry your car home. You'll use it for up to 2 years before it starts giving you any major issue.
Nigerian or Belgium used ??

I met the dealer through an agent but afterwards when I told him he apologised and asked me to fix it.

When I told him the price he didn't argue, he paid instantly.
It was very peaceful.

Eeyah. You may try Abuja. But the truth is fairly used cars are very costly these days since imported cars are on the high side! But a car of 2004 is estimatedly 21 years old old! To get a good engine go hard! Just add money and go buy imported Toyota Rav 4 2007. The engine is durable!
How much will I add to that 4.5M to get an foreign used imported Toyota Rav 4 07

I wouldn't recommend a bloodthirsty car, though...

There's no warranty for used cars, the onus is on you to carry out proper inspection before purchase
You are making this one up on your own. You would ask them if there is any fault you should be aware of and if you notice it before so and so date, you would return it. Let it be on record. They would tell you to forget about it and move forward. But the buyers are always too eager and forget to take care of this aspect before parting with their money.

There's no way one can "intentionally hide a major fault" in a vehicle like you claimed, you either got carried away by the blings and bought out of excitement without inspection OR you went along with either an unqualified technician or incompetent one or both

Of course, some faults wouldn't be noticed immediately most especially if it mended just for you to able to leave their premise with your scrap. Bottomline, buyers shouldn't be too eager to part with their money.
I have bought fairly use vehicles at least four times and that's has always been my method. Immediately they refused to assure me and they became angry or irritated, I knew it was a packaged gabbage and move on

Ma Oga, you need to remove emotions and research what I'm telling you here. Used cars don't have warranty, they're bought and sold "AS IS"

Sellers however, SHOULD NOT, impede any form of inspection you want to carry out, that's the koko

If you buy a used car for a low price and enjoy it for years, hence getting better good value and lots of savings as opposed to buying brand new, you wont go back to the seller to add up funds to him abi

So, when you buy and it goes sour, you chest it too

When you buy a used car, you inherit both the assets and liabilities. The onus is on you to carry out a proper research and thoroughly inspect before paying. Don't rely on things like asking the seller if the car is perfect and he says "yes", it won't hold any water

The guy who started this thread, the seller fixed his car for him. That's one. But you haven't learnt anything from it.
You have the right to ask them if there is any fault you should know about which you should ask. They would probably say no any fault. If you try to make them commit, that's when they would change their attitude towards you and that's all what you need to see, the red flag. What's so difficult for you to understand here?

I step out of Lagos searching for a reliable camry 2004. I saw many dealers on Jiji and nairaland. I visited each of them with my reliable mechanic.

After checking several cars, we discovered that none of the Nigerian used cars is worth buying .
They always have one problem or the other. The most common is bad engines.

Many dealers even promised to give my mechanic 100k behind my back to convince me to buy this melon car.

It's crazy that with 4.5 million, all you can get is a bad car.
We return home disappointed.

On getting home. I went back to check my own car that I have been driving for 5 years. My engine, gear, and ac are still in perfect condition and I wonder if those putting their car on sale are those with major problem.

Nigeria dealers have ruined the used car market. Is this a problem with toyota or because the car is a lower year.

I didn't consider other brands. Maybe it would have been a different situation.

At the moment, we are considering buying Tokunbo direct or on installment payment in order to evade this madness in the Nigerian used car Market
Even the foreign pre-owned (used) vehicles have to be properly verified by checking the VIN because a lot of those cars sold are either stolen from Canada, U.S.A, UK or badly accidented cars. So, do your due diligence so you get your money's worth.

This is your best bet of getting a Nigeria used car. Although the exterior of the cars may look rough, it is because most of them are first timers, the engines and gearbox is still very ok. A broke yahoo boy + a colos addict will be willing to sell for any price.
Some of you guys are "street-wise" ... Buying a Nigerian pre-owned car from a "colos addict." That cracked me up. cheesy grin

If you want to buy a Nigerian used car presently, you need to take your time. Don't buy from any middle man. Those so called dealers are worst than house agent. Some of them add as much as 500k on top wetin the owner dey demand.

Look for a friend, a friend's friend or a Yahoo boy trying to sell around you. So you can have an idea of the usage.

All those "car used by a lady" "owner relocating abroad" etc na packaging.
Wetin my eye see when I was trying to "upgrade" by getting a Nigerian used no be small.

Now I don go back to my own car. When I have money I go get a Tokunbo.
Interesting takes on the Nigerian pre-owned car market.

Camry 2004? That's Camry Big Daddy. Any reason you are going for such an old model?

I think you should buy something of a higher model. Even spider is still a bit better. Camry are very strong cars starting from the years Toyota started making them.

If you still insist on 2004, Camry. My advise is buy the Camry that has good body, legs and internal features in top shape and bad engine. I have bought a Nigerian used car before with Tokunbo body and internal, even the inside was still smelling Tokunbo......but the car has bad engine. I negotiated lower to accomodate the replacement of the engine which I did immediately I bought the car.....atimes, it's better you buy your own engine, a real Tokunbo engine that you are sure about

,
You sabi the game! Best advice.I tell people when buying naija used cars, just go for one with good body and interior and factor the replacement cost of engine and transmission in your negotiation.Chikena!

You know what people are saying generally when they're discussing Nigerian used cars now. It is mostly old cars nearing expiry date, not hilux, not 2018 model vehicle

Personally, I think you are trivialising this issue of sellers of Nigerian used cars by saying that foreign used cars (and their sellers) are in the same category. May be you have forgotten that many Nigerians don't even know what new cars/vehicles look like. Tokunbo is our common new motors in Nigeria because they the closest to new motors that majority of Nigerians could afford. The difference between the two is like difference between the ground and the space.
Less than 10% of tokunbos in Nigeria could have hidden issues while over 90% of Nigerian used could have hidden issues. What are you even saying? No be foreign used cars later becomes Nigerian used cars? grin grin
Not really, people buy brand new cars here, you can find Nigerian used cars that were bought brand new by the first owner. Used cars market is not just as simple as Nigerian used is problematic and Tokunbo is not, I could tell stories of people who got lucky with Nigerian used cars and unfortunate with foreign used cars, and the other way round, what's up there in my post is in summary telling people not to lose guard because the vehicle is Tokunbo, do the same thorough inspection you would do if it was a Nigerian used!
