That is what ingrates deserve. No matter how little any gift is, ingrate like this foolish guy should open their cursed foolish mouth n say thank you for such magnanimity especially when such fools do not extend such privilege to others.

churro:
Ah! Why fire the guy na? Isn't he doing his job for which he is employed well? Why not simply reprimand him verbally and exempt him from future bonuses? This permanent punishment of employment termination is too harsh and just pure wicked.
Re: Is This A Good Enough Reason To Fire An Employee? by Kk4(m): 10:30am On Jan 15, 2025
I am a big advocate for getting what you deserve but in this situation, if the employee is let go, it's not a bad decision from the boss because this is not a good attitude from anybody, employee or not.
It was a gift not an entitlement. A simple thank you wouldn't hurt anybody.

Shey if the boss stop giving this entitlement because of one person, they will call him a bad employer.

Remember the story of the palm oil and fingers? Yes.

There's no better reason to fire someone than this
Not really a good reason. He doesn't need his staffs to worship his ego he just needs them to be productive. But it doesn't cost the staff anything to acknowledge the receipt of 13th month salary and say thank you. If I was him I won't fire him but won't give him any bonus next December if he asked why he wasn't paid then I will fire him right there

I don't even need a prophet to tell me that you have a low-paying job. If you work for a boss who pays you so well, something in you will always tell you that you should show some gratitude, especially when you look around you and see abject penury in your country.
You are dumb to think so.

Learn from this.

You can never go wrong from being a grateful and thankful person. It's imbibed in some cultures.
Infact, where I come from, if someone gives you something, you thank the person. The following day, you will still thank the person for the gift he gave you yesterday.

Doors will always be open for anyone full of gratitude. Let's learn not to take things for granted.

it's probably a small office setting where the staffs have their bosses number and call him directly for certain requests or issues.

In such cases the bosses expects staffs to show appreciation for the unexpected gift which he went through certain lengths to do for them.

Not every private business pays Christmas bonus.
Found what I'm looking for.
The employer is probably close to the employee, and the employee might have been walking on a thin red line before which his ingratitude put the final nail on the coffin.
I'm into poultry business, few years ago, my sales girl wasn't available on Xmas day, boxing day and new year day claiming she is having a family function, whereas, it's just to go party with friends.
I was alone in shop facing the festive stress with my wife and family, after resumption, she came to meet me to ask for Xmas gift, i just told her that I've nothing to give her, she should stick to her salary since that's the only thing she is with me for. Though I never fired her, but if she has been having other issues with me beyond that, I would have shown her the door

If its a large organized company that does this routinely, of course its not needed. IF its a small one-man firm where the owner has done it out of his goodwill, why wouldn't you say thank you? Does it cost something to say thank you?

So the boss was expecting a thank you from him which never came in, he got annoyed and fired the said man.....To me, that's sign of a low self esteem....since he didn't call to say thank you doesnt mean he should be fired but rather, such gifts won't be given to him next time.. thou i wouldn't blame his boss, every man with his or her own personality.....this will serve as a lesson to the said man and to every other living souls out there who doesn't know what appreciation means in life........Even From OP write up, i learn a little lesson from it.

Re: Is This A Good Enough Reason To Fire An Employee? by flokii: 11:04am On Jan 15, 2025
I wouldn't fire an employee over such a ridiculous thing as 'thank you for Christmas bonus'.. I think Black people have serious problem. We tend to pick 'eye service' over competence and end up regretting in the long run.
The punctuality, dedication and loyalty of the worker for 365 days is enough 'Thank you' for any right thinking boss.

.......yes! In Nigeria, they deserved to be worshipped! Notwithstanding, asslicking at work place should not be the standard! You must know what works in your environment an act accordingly!
Re: Is This A Good Enough Reason To Fire An Employee? by Babawee: 11:08am On Jan 15, 2025
the truth of the matter is

Most Nigerian firm or indigenous company has big trait of staff worshipping them, I have worked for a company where the man gives a lot bonuses and wee have a WhatsApp group to appreciate him everytime he does that

where as the few multinational company doesn't even care after bonuses or benefits are paid

The employee was sacked because the bonus was not for staff welfare. The boss gave the bonus to feed his ego. In fact, it was not bonus. It was that kind of giving that some reach people give the poor in their villages and expect worship in return.
He was sacked for working in a one-man business. Who has that time in a proper corporate organisation

Enough to fire an ingrate of course yes!!! grin grin

Some people did not even collect December Salary, you collect 13th salary, rice and oil, and you don't find it fit to send even a WhatsApp message or text from another person's phone even if your phone is bad... Haba!!! Serious act of negligence and ungratefulness!!

It's a lesson to learn.
Moral of the story, learn to be grateful and thankful even for the little things.
Showing appreciation in this scenario is wisdom especially when you work under one man business. One man business is always micro-managed. I work in a corporate Organization and we were paid 13th months, and also given a reasonable amount as end of the year gift (for rice & oil), everybody collected, & enjoyed the festive season happily. Some staff & their families prayed for the company and appreciated the management kind gesture quietly without calling or sending an official thank you message & the organization did not sack or victimized any staff but calling to say thank you is not a bad idea.

Exactly my plan. 13th month salary is not in his contract so if he come ask what he didn't get when other got it I will fire him for asking

That is pure wickedness nah. Can't the boss warn or correct him? In this life no one is 100% perfect. Except may be he has been holding some offences against the guy, and he just used that as an excuse to nail him finally. Then giving 13th salary is equally beneficial to the employer also, because it is a form of motivation to the employees to give their best to the organization for better results. The boss is a shalow thinker
Re: Is This A Good Enough Reason To Fire An Employee? by masks(m): 11:28am On Jan 15, 2025
Very legitimate reason. The guy felt entitled to what he got. I'm glad he got what he was asking for.

This is the very one reason I took the bold decision and stopped working for anybody ever in my life.

Any little offense and you will be threatened with being sacked. What they fail to realize is sacking someone doesn't mean the end of the person's life. They might be pushing you to a higher destination with that notice but the average Nigerian like to think opposite and remain trapped under those so-called bosses for ages.
