Nigerian employers should know get to understand that as long you employees have worked or put in effort to turn up monthly... pay them. Employees owe you to turn and do the job while the Employers owes the employees their wage or salary.

But in Nigeria, they see it as doing you a favour. Why do I have go thank my boss for showing up and putting in efforts?
Go back and read the story again please

After Christmas many are usually let go of their jobs. It is likely the boss knowing the hardships the laid off will face .... the bonus and ration were given as palliatives to maintain them for a while. There is nothing that suggested he was fired because he didn't call the boss to thank him. Maybe that's why he thinks he was let go and not because of downsizing.

A guy was fired for this
So rice, oil and maggi dey for the entitlemets? There is nothing like unwritten entitlement where a job contract is concerned. You are either entitled to it formally or you are not. Anything else is subject to the boss' abilityand charity. Clearly those were gifts from the boss to tbe staff.
In my opinion the staff should have come together to buy a tbank you card signed by every staff member and presented to the boss. In absence of that, wisdom should have told him to send a thank you message to oga for the ntanta he so generously gave.

It's about good home training
I never said that thanking the boss is wrong. Your response is a deviation from the main issue.

The point is, was the boss right in sacking the employee? Between the boss and the employee, who displayed a worse home training?

If the Boss own the Business, YES! he can sack you for not liking your face

If the Boss does not own the Business, NO! he cannot sack you except for infractions against the business

The dynamics of the two structures are very different. When a Boss owns the Business, the business is semi-formal at best. Your Boss will treat you as HIS employee and not his BUSINESS employee. Some people love to be appreciated, if your Oga is such, there is nothing you can do about it than find another employment.

Of course, don't take it too hard. Just take it as a lesson for another time.
Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar

I suspect that your Boss is Yoruba:
There is an adage that says:
He who was blessed and did not show appreciations is like a Thief who just took the same blessing away!
Of course you don't thank your Boss for your Salary because it is your entitlement
For any other thing, it is a privilege and requires appreciation even if it is small.

It means that you are a petty person who holds grudges over little matters. No be dis life again that always ended before we open our eyes after closing it for a while? The appropriate treatment should have been to wait for another Christmas and refuse to give him those bonuses again if you are a petty type.

CaptMarvel:
Enough to fire an ingrate of course yes!!! grin grin

Some people did not even collect December Salary, you collect 13th salary, rice and oil, and you don't find it fit to send even a WhatsApp message or text from another person's phone even if your phone is bad... Haba!!! Serious act of negligence and ungratefulness!!

It's a lesson to learn.
Moral of the story, learn to be grateful and thankful even for the little things.
Lol. How many workers would federal and state governments fire for not saying "thank you" over Christmas gifts, bonuses and minimum wage implementation? grin grin
We need to do away with this backward mentality. If he didn't show gratitude this time around, then don't give him anything next Christmas if you are pained that he didn't call again to say thank you for the second time as I'm sure that they all must have said "thank you" already at the point of collection. Stupid people with shitty mentality full this country

Africans wants to be worshiped, if you want to go far in Africa especially Nigeria, be obedient, humble and greet like a Yoruba man especially to rich men. They hustled to make the money in order to oppress you, help them oppress you, then grab your own, snatch it and run away like ballot boxes.

The downside of working in a one man business.

That business is likely to fold up with the demise of the oga, that is if he is able to sustain the business with such mindset.

Remove emotions from business. If it was the guys entitlement why does he need to thank the oga. It is business he does his job and the oga gives him his entitlement no more no less.

The guy should be happy that he dodged a bullet.
People like that that doesn't ass lick are self confident and know their worth the sacking might even motivate him to become greater than his boss that sacked him later in life.

You couldn't appreciate a gift from your superior even though it wasn't part of your entitlement.

Meaning: You received a gift you did not work for but your entitlement spirit prevented you from saying THANK YOU which doesn't cost you anything.

Was your boss gift to you part of your salary?
If he didn't give you anything, would you think he owes you?

Secondly, appreciating a gift should never be a function of the SIZE of the gift.

If he had given you a car, would you have kept quiet?

These were your two grivious errors

It is so funny that you are very confident in your erroneous reasoning. I never said that it is wrong to appreciate 13th month salary. The post is not asking about whether the employee's action is right or wrong. The post is asking whether the boss overreacted by sacking the employee. You left what the post is about and have been focusing on what the post is not about.

Appreciating an employer for paying 13th month salary and giving Christmas hampers is not bad. But sacking an employee because the employee fails to appreciate those things is very wrong.

You are making a very big mistake by thinking that 13th month salary and the Christmas hampers are a favour to workers. Those things are appreciation to workers for being good employees and promoting the organisation. If you sack an employee because the employee did not appreciate such things, it simply means that you are treating those things as a favour to the workers. A gift is different from an entitlement. 13th month salary and Christmas hampers are more of appreciation to employees. If, on receiving the appreciate, an employee decides to thank the employer, there is nothing wrong with it. But if the employee does not appreciate those things, it is not enough reason for the employer to sack the employee.

What has your action or inactions done to you?
if you cannot learn from it, you have just one option: Go create your own company!

You just wrote that your Boss APPRECIATED you hard work by giving you a Bonus
BUT
Here you are with an entitlement spirit justifying why it is NOT correct to reciprocate APPRECIATING your Boss for recognising your hard work.

Did he owe you your 12 months salary?

People like you will NEVER ever appreciate your subordinates because you will say "Haven't they been paid their 12 months salary!"
