SS3 Students In The 1990s Vs. SS3 Students In The 2020s (Photos) by GistMedia0(op): 3:29pm On Jan 23, 2025
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and compare SS3 students from the 1990s to those in the 2020s. Back in the 1990s, SS3 students had an aura of maturity that was hard to miss. They looked and acted like young adults, ready to face the world. Many were already talking about their future careers, getting into serious relationships, or even learning real-life survival skills.

Now, enter the 2020s. SS3 students today seem way more playful and carefree—some might even say childish. Their world revolves around TikTok trends, memes, and the latest fashion. It's like they’re in no rush to grow up, unlike the older generation that felt the weight of responsibility early on. shocked

So, here’s the million-naira question:
Is it true that SS3 students in the early 90s were much older and more mature compared to what we see in the 2020s?

Op you're a bloody liar and shallow thinker, how can you pick up old students picture of not up to 3 years where the old students decided to wear their school uniforms to their secondary school to commemorate their old students anniversary celebration....why do you have to give a wrong narrative

That one guy that brings only 2 books in a plastic bag, can’t hold a pen and cannot write well.

Any guy that went to federal government college in the 90s will attest that this is true. The SS3 students of those days were physically bigger, stronger, and more matured.
If they sent you on an errand, dem never born you well make you no go.

The term "school father" and "school mother" literally came about because these students were old enough to be fathers and mothers.

I remember during visiting days, some of them would be visited by their wives and kids.

Back then we used to witness school vs school fight. Alumnis of Igbobi and Ansarudeen know this very well.

Some schools didn't allow SS students to wear trousers. You go see matured men on short knickers with their strong hairy legs. Nobody go tell you sey dem no be your mate.

These were the days before mobile phones even existed. Now if they punish you small e don enter Twitter.

I think our diet took a turn for the worse. Back then, SS3 were like adults. You aspired to get to that level one day. Their heights were appreciable heights and that is one reason for bullying because the disparity between a Junior student and a senior student was a lot. If you were short as a senior, you had weight to commensurate for your shortness. Then came the private schools, they completely destroyed the merit of earning trousers and skirts and everyone started wearing the same clothes. The nutrition of the Y2K kids also made them look small so you did not know the difference between a senior and junior. In summary, I think nutrition is one huge factor to look into because people have gotten smaller by the years. Don't tell me about the broilers we have today because they are not physically fit, they are just big.

Though the pics are fake, the fact still remains that the new generations are achieving academic feats faster and younger than past generations, the negative effective is that it is killing the spirit of alluta when these young minds finally get admissions into higher institutions, students have no more say in school affairs and are just pushovers by school authorities shocked

Na only you talk true for year.
The Nostalgia for yesteryears is just an illusion.
I was in Sec school in the beginning of the 2000's, that means I still saw the vestiges of 90's students. They looked big and way matured, so did I when I got to Ss3 and the juniors after me.
So thanks once more for being factual and realistic here.
In fact to further buttress your point, the SS3 now due to their diet and exposure are way smarter, futuristic, could be less respectful but they are more knowledgeable than the past.

Back to the question.

We have younger children in SS3 now.

True. When I was in SS3 we had some girls and boys in their late twenties and any little thing gets them upset.

You'll hear things like, I'm not your mate, I have your mate at home, it's because of condition else I would have been married by now. Etc.

The school in the first picture is ransom kuti memorial school. It used to be Fela's shrine until the military burnt it down and built that school in memory of Fela's late mom.

Opposite the school is empire. One of the most famous ashewo joints in Lagos. Driving there at night is extremely dangerous. I've had my side mirror broke once on the railway that leads to jibowu by some dirty looking guys there. In the day they'll pose as car washers cleaning your car and demanding for tips. In the night they'll try to Robb you. They were trying to break my glass. I quickly drove off. Most home robberies in Surulere are done by guys from that empire and idioro.

I've heard stories from people I know who were robbed there. Worst of all is that Police raids that area on a weekly basis yet it's still a hideout for criminals.

Add to the OP's observation about the seniors getting ready for adulthood, today we have a problem of kids gaining admission into higher institutions because some of them claim they have to be 25 post NYSC three years experience.

A kid is still a kid even if they skip the process. They will learn the hard way at the office.
