May will say i'm being selfish, or 'dont want them to come' as most of our people do when I or any american born Nigeria tells them that they're wasting their time trying to come here. I figured I leave the truth out here because many of our people are dying, and ending up in prisons, more importantly committing unnesscary acts of desperation in the name of obodo oyibo while many that live here are trying to go back to Nigeria because they know the truth.

If you can make it in the US, you can make it in Nigeria

We too often attribute success to geographic location. While location is important for many things and some environments are more conducive than others, the US is not the place to come if you want to be rich, and more importantly if you want to be rich AVOID europe. The reason is because this is the land of the middle class. Going to school and working hard is going to land you in the middle class. You will live in a modest home, drive a modest car, and be able to cloth and feed yourself well. This is not rich. The problem in Nigeria is the middle class is rare so people don't know what it is.
Middle class people buy everything using loans for the bank. That's what you have to do in america. You don't own your home, you don't own your car, and you have to pay thousands for school after you finish. This is how many Nigerian Americans get 'trapped' in the US. Because they are middle class they can't pay off these loans quickly and it often takes decades to be debt free, but nearly all americans are in debt.
This is why many can't return as freely as they wish, and why many are dying from stress. In the US it's difficult to become rich for a black person. If you want to be rich here you start a business and hope it work, but there are so many businesses doing so many things that have been around for literally 100-50 years and are worth billions that it's hopeless to start because they will easily crush you.

Europe is even worst. Europe is a socialist system with very high taxes that keeps anyone from being too rich or too poor. You will live in comfort in the US and Europe but it's not a land of 'wealth', it's a land of order and function.

Those Nigerians that make it in the US or Europe are actually a rare and special breed. They have drive, a vision, opportunity and most importantly a plan. I will say that anyone with these traits will make it in Nigeria as well. The difference is your money goes further in Nigeria than it does in the US. A person worth 1 million USD in New York can still struggle to pay bills because they're so high. If you have 5000 USD in Nigeria you can live like Jay-z half a year.

Returnee Nigerians are Liars
Many Nigerians return from the west with sll types of clothes, new cars, and begin building homes in their villages. They create the illusion that they've 'made it', and use their return to flaunt their 'wealth' instead of helping their brethren. This is a lie. Don't believe them. These people know 2-3 years in advance they're going to Nigeria. It's then that they begin saving the money they will use to show off for December. I've know many that go to the bank and acquire loans so that they can buy objects they'll use to fake as if they're rich in Nigeria. Many will neglect their bills and debts so that they can keep up the image of someone that is rich in Nigeria. Many of the people in Nigeria flaunting are poor people.
This is the home of a Nigerian American i know

but they will behave as if they're Donald trump upon returning. This creates a false image that everyone in the Us, or even the majority of people have a lot of money. It's a lie. This is a very expensive place to live and most people are modest.

The Richest Nigerians are in Nigeria
As i said the place to look for wealth isn't in a new land. By the time you're done learning the customs and way things work here you'll be 50. You know Nigeria, you know the way it works, though few want to admit it you can make it in Nigeria. The richest nigerians in the world are from Nigeria, and don't bother themselves with the US. If you look at somebody like Dangote, Adenuga etc you will see they have one devious but consistent thing in common: connections to those in power. As a black person, and more importantly a Nigeria, you have to understand those in power are white and have no business bothering themselves with you. At least in Nigeria you can climb the social ladder more freely, you can't here. To become rich in America you need a great idea, something nobody has ever done before like an invention or a service and it has to make sense to the demand. If you have one of these....you'll make it in Nigeria as well.

Not Every Country is Rich, Be careful

Many people think any country with white faces is the US, and all European countries are good. BE CAREFUL this is a lie
Canada
US
UK
Australia
New Zealand

are the only country i would suggest for anyone. The rest are extremely dangerous and the people there have a hard time achieving anything due to poor economies and racism. Israel, Poland, Spain, Italy are all place that look nicer than Nigeria but suffer from the same unemployment and corruption. Many Nigerians feel they will get someone going to China not knowing that there are more unemployed Chinese than there are human beings in Nigeria. If you're not going to any of the countries on the list, don't waste your time. Many are going to places more corrupt and downtrodden than Nigeria like Russia where the poor remain poor for ever and the rich are rich forever. more importantly DO YOUR RESEARCH. I recently had a friend go to Yemen. Yemen is not only poorer than Nigeria but is one of the worlds more war torn nations. Many nigerians will go somewhere without knowing the name of the countries president. Not every oyibo country is 'ala beke'. Many might as well be in Africa. Be careful!

Don't come here for the wrong reasons.

If you want a quality education for the sake of knowing more (not getting rich), a stable consistent life, 24 hour power, stable employment, good health care, good infrastructure, and a life of routine and order this is the best place in the world to be. If you want to be extraordinarily rich, a 'big man/woman', relaxed, to have fun in life, have children that will carry on your name and culture, or even important back home, stay home. You can want all of these things but you can't have them all. Many Nigerians believe they can come here and enjoy the benefits without suffering the pitfalls, this isn't true. Most Nigerians in the west are stressed, unhappy, lonely, feel as if they don't belong, struggling, and have children that most likely won't take care of them when they're old. Many are very rich as well and have done well for themselves but they would have done the same back home. Even with 24/7 power supply you'll come to find that you'd rather be eating egusi in the dark because a lot of the west isn't worth it if you come for the wrong reasons.

Like i said, many have made it and this is a great place to live and raise children. It's not a place to become 'rich' but it's a good place to have a reasonable life without too much unpredictability. If you can't make it in Nigeria, you can't make it here, that's plain and simple and by the time you learn what it takes to make it here, it'll be too late. and again, be careful where you go, only a hand full of countries are better than Nigeria, i mean it.

LOL the US government can't finance it's budget either. If you weren't lying about your 'american passport' you would know about the debt situation here and the fiscal cliff.
You don't sound like a real american, there are things americans dont say and what you just posted is one of them, i can call a fake when i see one.

I think that people leaving nigeria is best for nigeria because it's helping us get rid of a lot of criminal, hateful and unpatriotic elements. I think poverty beats down many people's ability to ration correctly and the guy that posted above me shows this, so it's going to be hard to speak so someone who is still in abject poverty like himself. It's hard to think when you're hungry. Nevertheless he shouldn't pretend he's in america...

Nice narration, to each his own but Nigeria as a country needs to wake up, the same evils in the west have slowly crept on upon us, we should return to the philosophies of our fore fathers.

And many Nigerians are suffering in the mist of plenty.

Why not stay in a white man's land where at least you can have a relative PEACE OF MIND.

In every country one has to struggle before you can achieve. Dollars does not grow on tree in the USA or picked on the streets in Canada. People work and earn them. At least if you work hard you can earn a living unlike in Nigeria where hard-work without a 'godfather' is vanity!

Those countries OP suggested are not the only places one can make it.
I for one don't believe in the Greener pastures syndrome but I believe one can make it anywhere regardless of geographical location be it Angola or Afghanistan.

I wouldn't recommend the US to just anyone. I'd only recommend it if the person that wants to travel has family or friends who are established and willing to allow him or her to stay for awhile, meaning months. This isn't the US of the 1990s. Granted, the economy is looking better. However, Americans, who were born and raised here, are still struggling as is. If misfortune befalls an immigrant, say a car accident, and he or she needs medical treatment, all I can tell you is best of luck and say heavy prayers.

Another thing Nigerians need to know is that the US isn't a "get rich quickly" country, unless you're fortunate to win multi-million lottery. Whoever comes here should be prepared for years of hard work and sacrifice. Most times, one has to start from the bottom of the bottom and work his or her way up. I remember what my parents and family friends went through to become who and what they are today. It is not for the feeble.

Your assertions are just misleading, if you were denied visa, just say so.

Yes, someone who makes it here can def make it in Nigeria, no doubt. However, the conditions of living in both countries are different. Yes people have to plan and save before traveling. Do you wake up one morning and drive to the east or west for Christmas?

Because you have to save, does it make you any less ok? I don't understand how a lot of you guys think. It's just baffling. This may be the truth for you loved ones, but please don't equate it to more than 2million Nigerians living here.

Everyone and his dog now gives advice on living in america. My best friend came over to Canada (not much different from America) with not a single soul in terms of real friends or family. Today he is happily married with a great job and living just an hr away in NJ. I had family, but i moved over 1000 miles away from them and only saw them once a year at best... i rented out my own apt within 4 weeks of getting here and have done so for the last 7 yrs with no problem whatsoever.

The key to living here is FOCUS on your objectives, stay on the right side of the law and work hard. You dont need a gazillion friends and family to survive. More often than not, those friends can be more trouble than is worth.

Oh and a few tips based on the quote... if you have a good job or in school then you shld have health insurance. Should you need medical facilities you will be just fine. At worst get build yourself a good network of friends (a church may be a good starting point) and you should be ok. Unless you're a criminal, on expired immigration papers or too impatient to get-rich-quick, America is a fun and easy place to live.

There's an exception to every rule. My parents came alone as well. You know fully well that it's easier to start a life abroad if you have friends and family there to aid you. What I said isn't absurd.

Good job? As soon as they come to the US? My aunty came from England and they wouldn't except her BSC in Biochemistry. She's now working as a certified nurse assistant, which is nasty, strenuous job with menial pay and crummy health insurance. A young woman I know just came from the Philippines with a Bachelors in Nursing. California will not recognize her degree, so she's working at GAP and saving to take courses to gain nursing licensure.

Easy?

The only reason abroad is easy is because everything or most of everything is functioning. Apart from that, getting situated is more complicated than it needs to be. I beg of you to go tell Americans who have lost their jobs and insurance coverage that life in the US is easy lol.

In a few months I will be leaving Nigeria to europe(belgium) for a masters programe.
Do u know the problem with nigeria?
There's no rule for any procedure.
Nothing actually works.
Things are going down everyday. U can't make reasonable money in nigeria without telling a lie or doing one evil or the other. How long can this continue. I hv made money in nigeria and I know there's money in nigeria but in the process u wud trebble. If u don't connect with politicians u will find it diFficult. There are absolutely no jobs in nigeria. Educational system is terrible. Hence my choice to do an msc in europe. I plan to get back as soon as possible.
Lastly the poster has made good points but people who have sufferred in this country can hear u becuase they go to other countries with HOPE but in nigeriA there's no HOPE like we don't expect the best anytime soon.

This is the home of a Nigerian American i know

That is the loved one you know. I live in VA, and I can vouch for many folks who live in the McLean, Great Falls, Fairfax, areas. Folks that have homes worth more than $500,000. These are the folks who work in the govt, or who have their own business, or something else.

There's no template for success because you're Nigerian. Besides, how do you know what the person's purse is? He may live in an old house, but his retirement and 401k account will dwarf everything you have in this life. Please, stop using earthly stuff to judge people.

However I still believe the US of A is a land of Opportunity for anyone who is willing to make the best use of it.
Most Americans I know and have met don't come across to me as they are half as smart as an average Nigerian but for the Opportunities and facilities at their disposal.
Just imagine a Nigeria with stable electricity and all, yet people manage to stay productive with the Epileptic power supply.
Not to talk of the line of credit available at your disposal as an American. Lots of Nigerians will build a multi million dollar empire if only they had access to a thousand dollar credit.
This is why a lot of Nigerians will go abroad and excel, only the few losers will come back to Nairaland and whine just like OP is doing now.
I still believe anyone can make it anywhere regardless. The grass is green everywhere.

Is this the only house you have seen in the U.S that is owned by a Nigerian ..or you just decided to show this one to buttress your bias or drive home your point?

Be sincere.

Maybe you need to go Georgia, Maryland, Texas, Virginia, Jersey, California, Illinois, New York and see the houses owned by hard-working Nigerians.

Based on this quote alone, you entire opinion is biased.

Wherever you are, if you work hard and with a stroke of luck, you will live comfortably. It is just tougher in Nigeria with all the other issues you have to deal with (kidnapping, electricity, corruption, etc.).

Stop lying to yourself and others. It is not right
