Nice write up. Truth be told. Those who have ears let them hear. Many have travelled then learn the truth....stranded and jobless, homeless and hopeless,...would like to return but can't because of pride and expectations on their return. Look before you leap out of Nigeria....if you don't have a safety net in family to support you in times of need...look again or most likely you woupd be jumping out from the frying pan and into the fire.

I recommene the movie "Far from Home" made by Nigerians living in the US about a bank manager (Ramsey Nouah) who leaves Nigeria to live in the US. Very interesting and I wouldn't be surprised to learn it is someone's life story.

[quote author=]May will say i'm being selfish, or 'dont want them to come' as most of our people do when I or any american born Nigeria tells them that they're wasting their time trying to come here. I figured I leave the truth out here because many of our people are dying, and ending up in prisons, more importantly committing unnesscary acts of desperation in the name of obodo oyibo while many that live here are trying to go back to Nigeria because they know the truth.

If you can make it in the US, you can make it in Nigeria

We too often attribute success to geographic location. While location is important for many things and some environments are more conducive than others, the US is not the place to come if you want to be rich, and more importantly if you want to be rich AVOID europe. The reason is because this is the land of the middle class. Going to school and working hard is going to land you in the middle class. You will live in a modest home, drive a modest car, and be able to cloth and feed yourself well. This is not rich. The problem in Nigeria is the middle class is rare so people don't know what it is.
Middle class people buy everything using loans for the bank. That's what you have to do in america. You don't own your home, you don't own your car, and you have to pay thousands for school after you finish. This is how many Nigerian Americans get 'trapped' in the US. Because they are middle class they can't pay off these loans quickly and it often takes decades to be debt free, but nearly all americans are in debt.
This is why many can't return as freely as they wish, and why many are dying from stress. In the US it's difficult to become rich for a black person. If you want to be rich here you start a business and hope it work, but there are so many businesses doing so many things that have been around for literally 100-50 years and are worth billions that it's hopeless to start because they will easily crush you.

Europe is even worst. Europe is a socialist system with very high taxes that keeps anyone from being too rich or too poor. You will live in comfort in the US and Europe but it's not a land of 'wealth', it's a land of order and function.

Those Nigerians that make it in the US or Europe are actually a rare and special breed. They have drive, a vision, opportunity and most importantly a plan. I will say that anyone with these traits will make it in Nigeria as well. The difference is your money goes further in Nigeria than it does in the US. A person worth 1 million USD in New York can still struggle to pay bills because they're so high. If you have 5000 USD in Nigeria you can live like Jay-z half a year.

Returnee Nigerians are Liars
Many Nigerians return from the west with sll types of clothes, new cars, and begin building homes in their villages. They create the illusion that they've 'made it', and use their return to flaunt their 'wealth' instead of helping their brethren. This is a lie. Don't believe them. These people know 2-3 years in advance they're going to Nigeria. It's then that they begin saving the money they will use to show off for December. I've know many that go to the bank and acquire loans so that they can buy objects they'll use to fake as if they're rich in Nigeria. Many will neglect their bills and debts so that they can keep up the image of someone that is rich in Nigeria. Many of the people in Nigeria flaunting are poor people.
This is the home of a Nigerian American i know

but they will behave as if they're Donald trump upon returning. This creates a false image that everyone in the Us, or even the majority of people have a lot of money. It's a lie. This is a very expensive place to live and most people are modest.

The Richest Nigerians are in Nigeria
As i said the place to look for wealth isn't in a new land. By the time you're done learning the customs and way things work here you'll be 50. You know Nigeria, you know the way it works, though few want to admit it you can make it in Nigeria. The richest nigerians in the world are from Nigeria, and don't bother themselves with the US. If you look at somebody like Dangote, Adenuga etc you will see they have one devious but consistent thing in common: connections to those in power. As a black person, and more importantly a Nigeria, you have to understand those in power are white and have no business bothering themselves with you. At least in Nigeria you can climb the social ladder more freely, you can't here. To become rich in America you need a great idea, something nobody has ever done before like an invention or a service and it has to make sense to the demand. If you have one of these....you'll make it in Nigeria as well.

Not Every Country is Rich, Be careful

Many people think any country with white faces is the US, and all European countries are good. BE CAREFUL this is a lie
Canada
US
UK
Australia
New Zealand

are the only country i would suggest for anyone. The rest are extremely dangerous and the people there have a hard time achieving anything due to poor economies and racism. Israel, Poland, Spain, Italy are all place that look nicer than Nigeria but suffer from the same unemployment and corruption. Many Nigerians feel they will get someone going to China not knowing that there are more unemployed Chinese than there are human beings in Nigeria. If you're not going to any of the countries on the list, don't waste your time. Many are going to places more corrupt and downtrodden than Nigeria like Russia where the poor remain poor for ever and the rich are rich forever. more importantly DO YOUR RESEARCH. I recently had a friend go to Yemen. Yemen is not only poorer than Nigeria but is one of the worlds more war torn nations. Many nigerians will go somewhere without knowing the name of the countries president. Not every oyibo country is 'ala beke'. Many might as well be in Africa. Be careful!

Don't come here for the wrong reasons.

If you want a quality education for the sake of knowing more (not getting rich), a stable consistent life, 24 hour power, stable employment, good health care, good infrastructure, and a life of routine and order this is the best place in the world to be. If you want to be extraordinarily rich, a 'big man/woman', relaxed, to have fun in life, have children that will carry on your name and culture, or even important back home, stay home. You can want all of these things but you can't have them all. Many Nigerians believe they can come here and enjoy the benefits without suffering the pitfalls, this isn't true. Most Nigerians in the west are stressed, unhappy, lonely, feel as if they don't belong, struggling, and have children that most likely won't take care of them when they're old. Many are very rich as well and have done well for themselves but they would have done the same back home. Even with 24/7 power supply you'll come to find that you'd rather be eating egusi in the dark because a lot of the west isn't worth it if you come for the wrong reasons.

Like i said, many have made it and this is a great place to live and raise children. It's not a place to become 'rich' but it's a good place to have a reasonable life without too much unpredictability. If you can't make it in Nigeria, you can't make it here, that's plain and simple and by the time you learn what it takes to make it here, it'll be too late. and again, be careful where you go, only a hand full of countries are better than Nigeria, i mean it.

There is no principality nor power that is going to drag me back to that shithole country called Nigeria. See how my former colleagues and classmates, some who have jobs and some who don't are bombarding my facebook mail and bbm with requests of 100 dollars for xmas. That is the same country you want me to return to? The company i was working for was paying me peanuts after all the years I spent in university: so that is where you want me to return to? When I relocated to Aba from Lagos Almost 3 years ago, na so mosquito almost kill me for inside that filthy city, come see as my body and face come rough. Right now after just 8 months of staying here in Yankee, come see as my skin don fresh sotay I don dey resemble Akata grin. So you are telling me Nigeria is better than US? I applied for a job here, when I went in for the interview with an American chinko, she told me that it was a temporary job but a day later, she called me back and told me that she fought for me so that they changed it to a permanent job. She gave me the necessary documents and that same day I got a job. A chinko that didn't know me from Adam fought for me and gave me a good job with one of the big healthcare companies here.

In short, OP, thunder faya you for ever opening this idiotic thread angry angry

I simply don't understand how/why people compare sleep (US) and/to death (9aija). Everything and life is not all about money! I enjoy the fact that I can flip my switch and there's light, turn the knob and there's water, pull up at the gas station and in 5mnts am gone with full tank. This naija, abroad compare thing don too much! Make una leave people to live where they want now abeg! Is everyone living in Lagos from Lagos state? or is everyone living in Abuja from Abuja? same with PH and other cities? nigerians have been living in US, Canada, UK, etc as far back as even when it was $3 to N1 naira! As for me and my household, we will always visit naija because its home but will continue to live in the USA even if they change the name to ASU.

I've been thinking about the issue of what's wrong with Nigeria for a long time. . . . and for now this is the only thing I can come up with (warning - it might sound offensive )

The main problem with the country is not the economy, not the power, not the leadership, not (lack of ) security , roads e.t.c, not poor education , not unemployment.

The main problem is THE PEOPLE, yes Nigerians themselves/ourselves, our mentality, our mindset. Apart from very few, a tiny minority, the thought process of the average nigerian is skewed. Am sorry to say, but sometimes living amongst Nigerians feel like living with animals.

I have always wondered whether its not better to live with 'racist human beings' than to live with animals. Animals who sell of chalks as drugs, kidnap 70 yr old women. Award road contracts 10 times over while people die every day on the same roads. Animals who hold thanksgiving services for thieves who stole and are still stealing, animals who hoard fuel causing artificial scarcity , where ships bigger than buildings dissapear and pay billion as subsidies on products that never exist

I have always been a patriotic Nigerian, but reading this thread/ and so many other incidences have made me to start having doubts about hope for this country.

Don't get me wrong, Nigeria has treated me fine on a personal level, I have been blessed and do not have any material wants right now. I work in a field that is currently booming with opportunities left, right and centre and have risen the corporate leader quite easier than I thought but on a collective/national level we are in the middle of a disaster. I suffer vicariously everyday when I see the needless pain of this society.

I hope the 'reasonable few' can make a desired change and allow the country attain its potential but day by day it seems the odds are stacked. For me, 2015 is the water shed moment - any funny stuff, and am gone from this bedlam

My co-worker is from P.H. and is doing well. He has been in the states for 20 years and has a few real estate investments to supplement his income. My neighbor is from Delta and has his own construction business and is also doing quite well.

I recently briefly made the acquaintance of this distinguished gentleman here in Miami, Fl and couldn't believe his achievements after researching his many scholarly accomplishments in the states and Europe.

Long story short, not everyone is struggling in the states and many have made a positive go of it.

How I wish those advertizing Nigeria as the place to live and invest in, can equally advertise 'safe hospitals', 'security', 'stable water and electricity' as far better than what one gets from either from Europe or America.

There is more to life than buying flashy cars and building houses, in a country filled with all sorts of life unexpectancy.

Each to his/her preferences.

My friend, STOP being naive... They don't own the home completely, but they have equity in the home, don't they?

30 to 50 years? Are you frigging kidding me? My friend, an average standard mortgage loans is 15year, not that it's uncommon, but most mortgage loans are not very known to be in their 30 year terms.

How many of your Nigerians compared to it's average standard has a complete paid off loan, whether financed through mortgage loans or traditional construction loans or commercial instruments?

oh yea? 15 years to pay for a house? wow!. Well in Nigeria its either you build it to your taste or you by the property off. The most i've heard off is paying about 3 or four times. Please don't make yourself sound dumb, the average lease or mortgage period is actually 30 years (use google). Frankly, most of the family friends living in the diaspora who boast of big mansions will still pay their mortgage every month for the next 5-30 years. The ones I know who actually bought the homes completely are Nigerians who live and work in Nigeria.

I live in nigeria . I have lived there all my life but have had the opportunity to visit a lot of countries and have made up my mind not to live anywhere else. I have not been attacked by robbers in over 10 years and I live in an area with constant light. I was not born rich but I got a job 6months after leaving school and did not have to sleep or bribe anyone . I am in the process of getting a 15mm mortgage payable for 20 years at 6 percent and I intend to build and let out. As someone rightly said it does not matter where you live . If you set your heart to something and work hard at it you will succeed. I earn a 6 digit salary and most if not all my friends either earn the same or more . I love the structure of the developed world dont get me wrong and the fact that everything works is beautiful . But I also love a lot of things about Nigeria. I recently did not go to work for a day and all my neighbours either knocked or called to be sure I was ok the same wont happen in the civilized countries . I do not blame the Nigerians that have difficulty coming home or living here its sometimes a crazy place to live . But the impression that you have to either sleep with someone be corrupts rob or kill is totally wrong. The irony is as I am usually scared of walking on the road abroad because I could get killed or attacked for something as silly as the color of my skin or any flimsy reason . My fears could be as a result of watching too much crime and investigation sha loll

Roland17: Honestly i have been tempted to avoid this topic, but i guess am loosing..

If you were born and grew up in a struggle for everything including the air u breath in Nigeria, you watched your parents hustle day and night under the scorching heat of the sun and were drenched at numerous times under the rain, you get admitted to a Nigerian university to pursue a 4 year course and u end up spending 5-6 years owing to strikes and different issues bedeviling the educational sector in Nigeria, you finally graduate from tertiary studies and there are no jobs for you, not cos you are incompetent like many graduates the system has unfortunately bred but because of nepotism, bad economy, inflation, corruption and unemployment and you are fortunate to relocate to the US, your mentality about Nigeria changes despite how much love you feel for your nation..

Am not talking about people who relocated when they were young and do not understand the life cycle of an average Nigerian, on this forum there are so many Nigerian Americans who fall into this category cos they were either born here or relocated when they were 6-12, they easily cast aspersions on Nigerians who are making attempts to come over, for some, they forget at some point their father had to marry an American/ Green card holder to guarantee them the oppourtunity for a better life compared to the average young kid born in Nigeria, they easily remind you how fortunate they are to be Americans, forgetting the journey of their parents .

Life in Nigeria is not for the Fainthearted, its not for the weak, I AM A TESTIMONY TO THAT, thus when you relocate to a country where the government accepts responsibility for its citizens and residents, then you begin to have second thoughts.

The USA offers everyone an equal opportunity to success (to a very reasonable extent), IT's NOT A BED OF ROSES, BUT IT REWARDS HARDWORKERS, if you are a legal resident, you respect the law, HARDWORKING, pay your taxes, you can live a very decent life and aim higher, a decent life in US, is a Rich life in Nigeria when compared, so why should i not build a good house, buy a good car or live a happy life after working and earning a decent life in the US, why should i not pride my self in my achievements knowing how hard it was for me and my family before i relocated, so please do not blame those who legally earn a living in the US.

Education, Health, social services, Amenities, freedom and true democracy are tangibles, that shock your nerves, yes there is the fiscal cliff, the unemployment numbers has increased in the past years, yes the Housing market is down, but compared to Nigeria, these issues are things you can cope with.

Am never going to encourage anyone to relocate without a plan, or stay illegal here but if u are going to be a P/ Resident, all i can say is WORK HARD, STAY FOCUSED, CUT YOUR COAT ACCORDING TO YOUR SIZE, THE SYSTEM WOULD REWARD YOU WITH A DECENT LIFE AND AN OPPOURTUNITY FOR A BETTER LIFE.

ummm Nigeria rewards hard-working people and not shortcut seeking people.

Nigeria is a scary place, to be honest... However, everywhere has its upsides and downsides - and home is where the heart is...

It will be difficult for people who have lived outside Nigeria all their lives, or for a long time - with no family/friends in the country to move back there... Just as it'll be difficult for Nigerians with no family/friends abroad to survive in the new world...

Let's celebrate our Nigerian-ness, no matter where we call home...grin

@ All,

This is another interesting thread concerning living abroad Vs. Nigeria.
I read every post, ranging from the thought-provoking and the sublime, to the ridiculous.
The responses gave me a wide and deep insight into the diverse reasons
or "perceived reasons" why some Nigerians in the diaspora are disappointed with "abroad" and why some will forever
like to live in Nigeria, no matter the circumstances.
It is very refreshing to hear from Nigerians from different walks of life @ home and abroad, and
I appreciate you all for doing your thing.
My plan right now is to use my resources and the expertise I have acquired in the USA to launch innovative
programs and businesses in Nigeria. I intend to remain here and then visit Nigeria frequently to source for
talents and lay the frame work for my plans. The way for me is to use the best opportunities available
in the diaspora and @ home to achieve my goals. Nigeria is our home land and I believe we can make things
great if we contribute to her development, even in our own little ways. Let's stop clamouring for change,
let's be the agents of change.

omo_to_dun: I would like to appeal to NLers to always provide proofs for their claims and not to just quote magic numbers. So many anecdotes and claims here are egregiously and misleadingly false.

There are sundry opportunities in America and so many Americans are not interested in pursuing them because they are lazy. They are not willing to put in the work to better themselves. Other Americans, however, are extremely hardworking and are living a good life. America is a land flowing with milk and honey but it will not miraculously flow to your doorstep; you have to aggressively pursue it. It seems to me that if you don't have millions, Nigerians will not consider you a success, for until you have multiple properties and drive fancy cars will you be deemed not to be poor. That is not true.

You can live a good life in the States if you live according to your means.

Wole Soyinka is a success; he doesn't drive big cars and have fancy properties, same goes for Achebe, Ngozi Okonjo etc. Ngozi may be wealthy today, but thats due to her hard-work and determination. Endeavor to say only what you know; Nigeria and many other African countries have greater opportunities than any first world country because the lands are virgin....there are so many things you could do in Nigeria, some people haven't just thought of them yet.

The way you guys flaunt your stats is just too alarming... 50% on food stamps? shocked shocked shocked shocked

That means 160+million people on food stamps? That means, if there are 100 nairalanders on here, there's a strong possibility that 50 of us are on food stamps? LOL, smh @ ignorance.

15-25% working class doing menial jobs? LOL, menial jobs like? If a whooping almost 25% is in working class doing menial jobs, that means the middle class (the main bracket of U.S. economic contribution), is in serious dilemma...SMH again. Ask your self, what % of people are below poverty line, as opposed to the middle class, then re-educate yourself again.

google my dear friend.....google

TRUTHTELA: Is it not common sense? The people that stole public treasury in Nigeria and become billionaires, from Nigeria's past presidents, to the incumbent president, down to your local govt. councillor and co. Where do they send their kids to get good education? Where do they go for medical treatment ( HEADACHE & STOMACH ACHE) Obviously, they're telling you there's NOTHING TO DO IN NIGERIA, COMO'N people!!! How else do you want to be told that the FUTURE in Nigeria is BLEAK & BLEAK Your rulers leave you in darkness, LOOT YOUR COMMON WEALTH & BRING IT TO THE USA, to keep. What does that mean? (where person money dey,na there in heart dey ooo) USA, is the FUTURE ( they INVENT & THE ENVIRONMENT IS CONDUCIVE FOR IT), if you missed out, your kids might not, remember, here is the home of FORTUNE 500 companies ( they go to Asia, for cheap labor) e.g, Coca Cola, Exxon Mobil, Apple, Microsoft,Google, Facebook, Dell,GE, Lockheed Martin,Chevron,Pfizer,IBM, JP Morgan, etc. So, the PROOF of the PUDDING is in the EATING!!!!!!!!!
T
Do you know Asians are the highest percentage of intl students in America? I would guess they have better economies and infrastructure than Nigeria, so why the flood of asian students in the US?....

nijanigga: The simple fact is Nigerians are greedy and can go so low to make money, anywhere in the world. In Nigeria instead of the masses fighting corrupt leaders, they sell thier birthrights and wait for their turn to loot.Everybody can't be rich, but to live a fufilled life is more meaningful that being "rich" .
Remember the rich also cry.Not all that glitter is gold.

True.. But this is what most poor people tell themselves to make themselves feel better. P.s not insinuating anything..

Godogwu:

ummm Nigeria rewards hard-working people and not shortcut seeking people.
There are many Nigerians who work hard yet live below what their efforts would have brought, given the right environment.Dr Farrah Gray(one of the worlds youngest billionaire) once said this and I paraphrase 'You'll need 7times more work to succeed in Nigeria than in America. However you will get 7times more result'.

Pataki: How I wish those advertizing Nigeria as the place to live and invest in, can equally advertise 'safe hospitals', 'security', 'stable water and electricity' as far better than what one gets from either from Europe or America.

There is more to life than buying flashy cars and building houses, in a country filled with all sorts of life unexpectancy.

Each to his/her preferences.

Well like you said "Each to his/her preferences". You can't be guaranteed security anywhere in the world, don't make it seem like if someone comes into Nigeria today, the person is likely to die the next day or something.Frankly, I can't worry about someone randomly shooting me at the cinema for no reason, or shooting me at the mall for no reason....or coming to class and shooting everything in their sight for no reason whatsoever. please we have water...stable water (get a borehole) or live in an estate with general water supply. I don't know what you mean by "safe hospitals"..or people don't die in first world hospitals? wow! never knew. -____-

sometimes I wonder when last people like you have been in Nigeria.

Ppl wake up & run off 2 oda con3s cos of 'constant power, quality education, gud roads e.t.c' as if those facilities were put in place by God & nt d collective effort of d citizenry. Many Nigerians dnt pay taxes bt are eager 2 surrender same 2 oyibo con3s, whl decryin our underdevelopment.
Nigerian Professors are all over d world in advanced institutions whl bemoaning d quality of our education here. Who do they want 2 teach us? Who are they teachn?
If Dangote & Adenuga cn make it here, what cn stop moi?
If GEJ,OBJ & BUHARI cn be Presidents why nt moi?
If i cnt make it here wt my full rights & priviledges as a citizen, is it elsewhr as a 2nd class alien?
Those dat hurry 2 advanced con3s 4 a better life are like an 18yr old btful girl dat is married 2 a rich dude of 70 as d 5th wife cos of hz money. It connotes laziness & poor planning.
Nigeria cnt develop wt d level of unpatriotism of d citizenry. We are all as guilty as those in power. Lets change our attitude... It begins wt me.

We are all on a journey.

Within which we have different experiences.

Mine is different from yours.

There is only one constant.

You either work hard, cheat or be extremely lucky to be "successful" (which by the way means different things to different people)

So decide on what you plan for your life, forget what people are yapping about and give life a go.

Break free from your comfort zone and see the world and the different people's in it and the different cultures, tastes, music, styles, friends.

On your deathbed you won't care about your house or car or bank balance, but only have your experiences to comfort you and the happiness that you gave your kids an opportunity to have theirs.

We are all on a journey...to each his own .

I was watching a program on a DSTV channel 'UNDERCOVER BOSS' one of the worker who is a truck driver for the company was telling the Undercover CEO that he came to america with a few dollers but now he is living a American Dream and plan to bring his family anytime soon. Mind you the guy in question is also a white skin.
My dream is to go Germany, get my M.Eng in Mechatronics and possibly P.hd then come back home. I tell you the sky is gonna be tha limit.
I believe in making it right here in nigeria. Get something unique and different i tell you people would by the idea.
