Most of our parents got married without knowing thir genotypes .
It seems knowledge of genotypes was scarce in Africa in those days because I feel genotypes knowledge have been in existence for long in developed countries.
You get to thank your stars if your parents got married without checking their genotypes and you are still healthy because life of a carrier is not easy as they go through alot of pains falling sick all the time and most even die young.

You are right, but then, that was the exact reasons people had children that died prematurely in their early years(Reincarnating child/ Abiku) and they erroneously attributed it to some gods/spirits and all

So, consequentially, if our parents were both AS and got married, we'd be dead by now. That we are alive means they married right even in their ignorance

Life evens itself out somehow.

Sickle cell won't kill you, if you take good care of yourself. I have seen sickle cell carriers turn 70 (my uncle is one, and he looks very healthy)

All you have to do is take good care of yourself/ your child, avoid stress and cold weather/drinks, avoid mosquitoes, always take your drugs regularly and you're good. Yes crisis will come, but if you take good care of yourself and avoid stress and cold things, crisis will take a very long time before coming.

If you know any carrier that doesn't need blood transfusion anytime he or she falls sick, that person is a miracle child.

Can't you read the post that I got from Google... You guys come here, have children with SA ladies, and mess up with our gene pool.

And I'm very sure that most of those African immigrants who have children with SA ladies have never reveal to them that they're sickle cell anaemia carriers, that's why the country is now starting to have more cases of the sickness.

They didnt check and the child that was SS then died at their young age....Dem go call am spirit child or reincarnating child(Abiku in Yoruba)


Those lucky ones who werent SS survived and are here today... An example of this is You and Me

I don't think I would be happy in that situation. I mean living while watching my siblings all die off as a result of the ignorance and selfish choices of our parents ain't something to be happy about.

Foolish old generation. They called those innocent sickle cell kids that died ogbanjes. They kept having the kids and they kept dying.

I watched a story posted by the Nigerian Police Force in Delta or some other state of a man who had 33 kids in total with only 13 of them surviving. They just kept blaming the gods, children, and circumstances while they continued churning out more and more only for a good number of them to die off like chickens; note that they never thought to blame themselves. That is probably how your ancestors mostly lived.

I am not sure but I doubt they would have continued if one of their kids had up and died only to learn a genetic sickness was responsible. That is a devasting experience for both parents and children alike abeg!

However, growing up, I witnessed many families continuing to have more kids as though to replace the ones that were lost. Worse, many of them were aware the dead kid died of sickle cell sickness.

The children we call ogbanje are actually sickle cell patients
