Late Maj. Gen David Ejoor who was Governor of Mid Western Region (1966-1967) and then Chief of Army Staff made it explicit about the coup and called it an Igbo coup.

IBB lied, what did you expect him to say? The book is full of lies

The coup eliminated all northern leaders and gave birth to the genesis of Nigeria problem just few years after independence

Only those who get all their news from social media believed social media.

From what I have read, Northerners then believed it was an ethnic coup.
And if you want to blame them, take a look at the facts.

Top Northern politicians were killed and their killing was bragged about on national TV by an office of Igbo descent.

The Igbo president was not in the country.

Following which Aguiyi Ironsi, an Igbo man became Military head of state.

And he went ahead to sign the Unitary decree which took power from the regions.
And also failed to execute any of the coup plotters.

This was 1966 when news traveled slower and we had lower education and literacy rates.

If God forbid, a similar thing happened today, people will still draw the same conclusion.

Even Rufai is confused. A coup that was suppose to be bloodless was over taken by an ethnic bigot who went on a killing spree.
We don't need to be there... IBB will be silly to narrate it that way but the bitter truth is Igbos cannot be trusted with power.

The record said ahmadu bello was pushing for Islamic law implementation in Nigeria that push the more quest to kill him.

As for Tafawa Bello though a quiet man they felt he strongly align with Ahmadu Bello ideology and also since the picture was to put in Awolowo there was no second consideration..


As for Akintola, the record said they had no intention to kill him but to put him in prison.. however he opened fire on them and this created exchange of bullets.

As for okpara and Azikiwe. The news quickly escalated. Ifeajuna who was to kill both men was quickly subdue and most igbo officers was killed on the spot.


Obiechuna stopped the coup. Which led to aguiyi ironsi first control as the head of state. Though triggered annoyance from the northern sphere on why aguiyi is yet to prosecute them


But on a serious note why will it be an igbo coup when nnamdi Azikiwe is already the then head of state

What is even there to celebrate in the book he released? He was part of the leaders that put Nigeria in her current mess today. Why is IBB being honoured for the atrocities he committed while in power? God knows how to punish evil people, it may take a while but one way or the other, you'll pay for it.
