Yes. It works. The mechanic in the area I lived during service did it all the time to renew rusted car parts. He gathered many condemned parts in a pile and poured palm oil on them. Gods are spirits and each has what they are attached to when talking about elements so if you are in possession of the element to which a spirit is attached all you need to do is learn how to conjure such a spirit.
