Sexual Allegations: Instead Of Investigating Akpabio, You Chose Ignoble Path Of Abuse Of Power, Ezekwesili Slams Nigerian Senate

Former Nigerian education minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has accused the Senators of desecrating the Nigerian Senate.

She expressed her views in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, criticising the Senate for failing to investigate the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Instead, she said, the Senate chose "the ignoble path of vicious abuse of power and desecration of our public institution."

"When men, because of little power fleetingly acquired, start speaking like they are God, we all must remember what history reveals of their kind," she wrote.

Addressing Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan directly, Ezekwesili added: "Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, you have inspired a generation. You have inspired all credible citizens. You will never walk alone."

She also called on the Senate to investigate the allegations against its President.

“Investigate the accusation of sexual harassment — that is all that sensible Nigerians have collectively asked the @NGRSenate to do. But no, they have decided to choose the ignoble path of vicious abuse of power and desecration of our public institution,” she wrote.

The controversy follows the Nigerian Senate’s decision to suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, with the suspension taking effect from March 6, 2025.

Earlier, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had declined to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions on Wednesday.

The committee, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, presented a report signed by all 14 members, recommending that Akpoti-Uduaghan be barred from the National Assembly and prohibited from representing herself as a senator during the suspension period.

The suspension has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many expressing differing views on the issue.
