I hope Makoko people will agree to settle on the ground rather shore lines
why should they agree to settle on the ground rather than shore lines?

did they not see ground before they chose to settle on shore line?

is it by force to settle on ground?

This makoko shanty town is a security risk and not befitting for the area it occupies, so government is right in going into the area to open it up, but the settler's should be compensated, legitimate settlers or people who bought land/property legitimately through the local channels should be compensated. Government must act with a human face, housing is a big problem in Lagos, the government should be building low cost housing to rent, not sell, to help the working class and budding entrepreneurs who are a part of our buoyant economy and society.

Lagos State government please build low cost housing like the late Legend Sir Lateef Jakande of blessed memory did, this is a form of welfare which a rich state like Lagos should be doing.

Also please stop demolishing houses, unless a critical road need to pass through or for imminent environmental factors, otherwise it is not enough to demolish homes because people don't have governor consent or papers, those struggling legitimate people built those homes without mortgage with sweat and blood, please encourage the good and working class and entrepreneurs...wave costs off consent/regularisation of papers of properties in downtown, low-cost areas, most of the struggling people buy these lands from local families which is legitimate...goverment should focus on taxing properties in more affluent areas, like in Lekki Victoria Island, and high brow areas....let the people in downtown lakowe, ibeju Lekki, Epe breathe so they can build themselves and people who depend on them, these are struggling people. We need more houses demolition compounds the problems of housing in Lagos.

God bless Lagos State and Nigeria.

how is Makoko shanty town a security risk?

which area does it occupy and how is it not befitting to the area?

if you say LASG is "opening up" Makoko shanty town, was it closed before?

what amount of compensation can be given to these settlers that will make up for their being displaced from a place they called home?

how is sand filling this water body good for the environment?

WHETHER DEM DEY RECLAIM OR RETAIN, THE PROPER THING IS TO FIRST REHOUSE THOSE PEOPLE ON LAND BEFORE DEMOLITION.

OTHERWISE LEAVE THEM WHERE THEY ARE, SO U DONT CAUSE PROBLEM OF THIEF AND STREET BURNING OF DESPERATE HUMANS, THEY ARE ALREADY IN A BAD SITUATION, DONT MAKE IT WORST.

DEMON!
Rehouse people who think renting an apartment like every other person in Lagos is a crime. ?
And decided to build shanties all over the place.....
Rehouse people who doesn't have any business living in Lagos ?
Go to Makoko and see the rubbish going on there.. they chose to build house illegally on the water , which is government property.....who give the permission to build there ?

They can go and rent an apartment like every other person or relocate to neighboring states.

That's a large waterbody.

Why not create an economic ecosystem around it, that will explore the waters.
We know you tamed the ocean but pls stop trying to tame every water.

You'll spend sooooo much holding water back, when we can create clear water channel and make the best of the water body.

Venice is doing it...what can we do for Makoko, without encroaching on aquatic territory.
i don't understand why they just keep on sandfilling that lagoon.

The last time I checked, there are 36 states in Nigeria....they can move to any other State, if they can't rent an apartment.

That place is a complete mess. Allowing some people to be calling Lagos a slum

Without going into details, if you understand security, you will understand what I mean. Like I said they should be compensated, compensation should be basic rate of the property they presently occupy...like I said government should avoid demolition unless it's absolutely necessary because of the huge housing deficit in Lagos... demolition leads to further scarcity and discourage other investors that want to go into real estate investment business.

As commendable as this project is, the Lagos State Government must first and foremost engage with the community and other stakeholders so that they all can be on the same page.

A lot of sensitization must be carried out to impress it on the community why they need to relocate to a place already provided by the State Government so as to have a smooth operation of the sand filling project.

This is so because any forceful eviction without taking into cognizance of the many effects it would have on the community, would be viewed as land-grabbing and a deprivation of the community of the right to existence.

However, Makoko is undoubtedly an eyesore and in direct conflict with the Lagos State aspiration of becoming a true mega city of choice!

Makoko's time is up!

Why would my family build in that dump site? My family houses are on Lagos Island Why would any sane person build shanties on government properties? I am talking about those living around the shorelines and on water.
That's how they did in Maroko , before Governor Raji Rasak chase them out.........Jakande wanted to do it. But he couldn't,.....

As a a matter of fact, Ilaje in Ebute meta ( west) will also be cleared .. they have already sent them eviction notice, but they are still showing coconut heads........

Government should make better arrangement for them than they did Maroko people.
Makoko is some Lagosians ancestral home.It is the only home they know.No one with enough money would want to rent a home there, some resort to live their temporarily until they pick the broken bits and pieces of their lives back.

The penchant to landfill the water is really distressing.

What happened to cleaning up and repurposing the shoreline to create beautiful scenery
This area will suffer from flooding later after it's developed not a good idea to fill and block a natural water route.

Makoko full of slums and water.
Is this due to its abandonment for 25 years plus by Sanwo Olu, Ambode, Fashola and Tinubu despite using them for IGR generation?

Is this not the same thing for other parts of Lagos State, except the posh areas privately developed?

Lawmaker scores Lagos Water Corporation low

A Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction at the performance of the state Water Corporation.

Fafunmi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), said in Ikeja that the corporation had not been able to justify statutory allocations to it.

The lawmaker, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1 at the assembly, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the corporation had the capacity to generate much fund internally through water rates but had relied solely on government funding because of poor performance.

'' Anyone that is using water will be willing to pay for it; the corporation has not been giving us water.

"Is there any new community that Water Corporation has given water? People depend on boreholes; even government estates have industrial boreholes.

"Why do we keep pumping money into an agency that does not give us the desired results?'' he asked.

He noted that the Adiyan Waterworks was located at Ifako-Ijaiye, where many of the residents had resorted to digging boreholes as a means of getting water.

''A lot of people are falling sick because they don't drink clean water.

''In the same compound, where you have sewage, is where you have a borehole.

''There is no way you can manage the sewage that it will not leak and pollute the water; everyone drinking such is drinking contaminated water,'' he said.

The lawmaker urged the corporation to increase water reticulation and supply to residents.
