This is not a recent development because it has long been a part of US visa applications.

On the DS-160 application, they specifically asked the question, “Do you have a social media presence?”

If an applicant answers yes, then they ask him or her to name the social media provider or platform and also the applicant’s social media identifier.

This is not new.
