As a foreign national on this forum, I'm curious to know what is considered an ideal dowry in your tribes in Nigeria... And for those who are married, I'd like to know how much dowry did you guys pay for your wives and same goes for ladies, how much did he also pay for you? I'd also like to see other Nigerian tribes participate, it can't always be the Yorubas, Igbos, Hausas, and Fulanis. |

In my place, there's no specific amount, but #50 note must be on the table before the transaction is completed. |

If there's no specific amount, does that means even #500 can be enough to pay as a dowry? SafetyFirst: |

Samantha125:The essence of the #50 is because it's a must for money to be taken as dowry. Some families just take the #50 and return the rest of the money to the groom's family. I paid #1,000.00 as dowry for my own. |

There is no ideal dowry in my tribe, the bride's family come up with anything. Majority act greedy though. They try to assume all the cost of raising the girl child, especially if she is educated, all the tuition fees are summed and assumed in the dowry. The dowry is always in hundreds of thousands. And the list of other requirements requiring finance is endless. When added to the dowry, it is usually exorbitant. |

Samantha125:I think it's better if the Original Post ask that people include the tribes in their comments. Just imagine that a tribe actually 'fully' furnishes the groom's house? The tribe needs to be known and commended. We need to know that tribe and 'fully' commend their culture by making sure all their single women get married. Nlfpmod |

I’m not married…but in some Igbo communities you’ll be tasked maybe #100 or #1k(on the table,,cos there must be a transaction).. The community might state through a custodian will state their bride price…could be 100k ,200k and stuffs within the range. But the family in question might give you back the money,,,stating ‘we ain’t selling our daughter to you,,we’re giving her over to you cos you both have something of interest,,you should go take care of her….voila!’. In some areas though….let’s just say some imo communities…you’ll be tasked a truck load of yams, bags of rice and other edibles….plus expensive clothing materials and shiids😁 |

Then what's the purpose of requesting the groom's family to pay for a bride price if they're going to give it back? Why can't they just get married without it? Bouncing2: |
| Re: What Is Considered An Ideal Dowry In Your Tribe? by Bouncing2(m): 6:32pm On Mar 18, 2025 |
Samantha125:It’s just the culture.. Some families might actually collect the whole money while some will only extract few and pass you back the rest (Anambra and Enugu especially) |

If you don't want the dowry, then there's no need to request for one only to return it back... Or what do you think?🤔🤔🤔 Bouncing2: |

There is nothing like an ideal dowry in Nigeria. Each tribe have their unique dowry and bride price. In my own case, marrying from the southern part of the country, I paid #260. #10 was returned to me and #100 was given to my wife... Meaning I only paid #150 |

Samantha125:It’s just tradition!.. A poor man deff’ gon’ collect that money 😀. A rich man will extract only 1k(just to fulfill all righteousness)..and he’ll let you know that he ain’t selling off his daughter,,he’s just handing her out to you cos she’s into you,,treat her like an egg |

Samantha125:Hello Samantha. Welcome back. Among the Egbema, bride price is distinct from what is done traditionally in the course of marriage. The groom sends his people with a few palm wine jars to his would-be in-laws in what is called mai akpo ife afa (drink in which mission is not disclosed) . Thereafter what we call first, second and third visits follow in which the in-laws (groom's family) send various nuptial items ranging from drinks of different brands, cigarettes, clothes, etc of varying quantities as specified for the various stages. This varies from village to village. After the 3rd visit is the bride price, which might range from as little as 50 NGN to 500k NGN. It'smainly negotiated in monetary aspect. Pride price of 500k NGN is very rare indeed. In effect, the entire cost of visit items and the pride price might not sum up to 1m NGN. The main source of fund leakage is the marriage ceremonies proper (Traditional and white weddings) which may differ according to the taste of the couple. |

Samantha125:That's handful. I dunno how my folks will handle mine but I expect nothing less than N5m worth of items. I am worth more but make I no stress my boo too much. |

Samantha125:No, except there is divorce. Return of bride price spells end of marriage. |
