Hi Guys, please I just bought a tokunbo car after selling my former car, i did not sell it with my plate number, I will like to know if it is safely possible to use the former plate number. New plate number is like 42k or so, perhaps I can update the details of the former one to save cost,


I got two opinions already

1, It is not possible , they will only lie to you to collect your money, but if check system dem no change anything, I was advised to do a new plate number.

2, It is possible, try find out for nairaland from people wey don do am before, to know the cost and procedure.

It is possible but because of stress and security/risk reasons, get a new one.

Retaining your old number plate for use on your tokunbo car is the right thing to do but is it worth it? IMO it is not worth it because the cost of reregistration and obtaining a new number plate is almost the same.

When i was still doing the car biz as a side hustle, i could guess from your number plate the exact year you registered the car. I avoided cars that were used or registered for more than 3 years. I am sure there are other guys that are like this, so i think a new number plate is better. My opinion though!

Ok, the former car was just 4 month that I register it before I sold it, so I shouldn't use the registration plate again

The hype of obtaining or changing a vehicle plate number especially a bought used cars ain't necessary.
There are documents obtained that can remove or obliterate the former owner right to his or her sold car and the buyer still retain and use the old plate number.
Be mindful of processing your documents from Motor licensing authority, not through touts.

Make sure all documents related to the vehicle was handed over to you both expired and soon to expire, sales agreement with owner subject under perjury and witnesses.
Subject the vehicle to Police verification, motor vehicle licensing official can with a little fee, to confirm former owners, and a proof of ownership which invalidate the former owner right to the vehicle, motor license bearing your name, address and the particulars of the vehicle, proper third party insurance, and proper driver's license check vehicle color if it same as the car you bought at nvis.frsc.gov.ng whatever color therein can be changed by duly documented Court affidavit. These cost money.
Have you fire extinguisher, good tyres

How can I do a police verification? I have all the documents from the former owner and signed change of ownership documents.Just yesterday I renewed all the documents with the former owners name .

Request for it through motor licensing official who helped you, in your obtaining the your new documents.
Though not necessary if you know the owner, but if you bought it from car sales stand , you must do it.
