What genre do you think the song is? And don't tell me Afrobeat...😒😒😒... Because if that's Afrobeat, then I don't know what Afrobeat is anymore.

A keen ear.. and it's very important and a crucial aspect of the whole
Re: Nigerians, What Genre Of Music Is This? by Mariangeles(f):
Samantha125:
Those beats sound like South Africa's lekompo beats... The genre is not big, but it's very popular in Limpopo, where I'm from, it's far more popular than amapiano there.

So until someone tells me which genre of music is this, I'm classifying it under lekompo music as a South African Limpopian... 😅😅😅... The only thing missing is a Sepedi verse in the song... Sorry to all Nigerians that might have issues with it... grin grin grin
And there's nothing wrong with that. I doubt Nigerians have any issue with that.
Like I told you, the sound is unfamiliar around here.

It's afropiano, an alternative for people who like amapiano, but don't want to support racist mulattos from South Africa.

ETA: But yes, technically it's house music. Shout out to Frankie Knuckles and Chitown.
Re: Nigerians, What Genre Of Music Is This? by Samantha125(op): 10:02pm On Apr 06, 2025
There's no such a thing as afropiano... There isn't even any amapiano beats there.

Samantha125:
Google misclassifies genres all the time and is every song that is not gospel in Nigeria Afrobeat? Just yesterday, it told me barcadi music is amapiano...🤦🤦🤦

You guys also classify your amapiano as Afrobeat when there's nothing about it that is Afrobeat.

That sound is not Afrobeat, I've been exposed to that type of a sound since I was a child, before even amapiano became a thing and I know it... You can't just classify something as Afrobeat simply because the artist is a Nigerian.

There's nothing wrong if he got inspiration from SA.
I can't listen to music now. But afrobeat is different from afrobeats just so you know
Re: Nigerians, What Genre Of Music Is This? by illicit(m): 10:26pm On Apr 06, 2025
That's his own type of music...
Re: Nigerians, What Genre Of Music Is This? by eepeepook: 10:43pm On Apr 06, 2025
Name it Afrobeats and call it a day. Compartmentalization is the white man’s specialty. Africans don’t care. We make good music and dance to it. The reason so many genres exist in South Africa is because white people run the place. They don’t want to mix their music with “those people’s.”
Re: Nigerians, What Genre Of Music Is This? by Samantha125(op): 10:48pm On Apr 06, 2025
I know that Afrobeat is different from Afrobeats, and that sound is definitely not Afrobeat... Nigerian music alone is unique and there's nothing confusing about it... It's like you guys classify every music by a Nigerian artist that is not gospel as Afrobeat even though the sound is nothing like Afrobeat and this is killing the Afrobeat culture.

Chella himself wouldn’t know what lekompo is. He’ll call it Amapiano or Afrobeats.

Yes, but we have a genre for that type of a sound here and it's not amapiano.

There are no Afrobeat or amapiano beats there, unless he doesn't know what Afrobeat and amapiano sound like.

But then again, how sure are we that he wouldn't know about lekompo music? I mean some music producers do their homework before making their beats... Beyonce sampled many unpopular songs from around the world and made them popular without anyone knowing anything about it and it is also alleged that she also sampled a song by South Africa's Brenda Fassie... Who'd have ever thought she knew anything about Brenda Fassie?

Here's another lekompo beats.

Ahh Lekompo... I was introduced to this style of music by some South African DJs sometime last year and I particularly love hbk live act. In fact one time I would have kwa gae on repeat while working all day. I think I posted on a music thread here too. I never knew what the genre was called though. Just assumed it's some new interesting sound with a touch of some modern House music elements infused in it too. Lots of music genres are strongly interrelated but I think the Chella guy infused it also in his beat and like U rightly said, lots of producers and artist sample unpopular songs or infused the style and mix with already existing styles. The goal is to sound unique and entertain at the same time. And yes that Chella's song had that rythmic percussion and melody characterised by the afrobeats genre and also the soulful and emotive qualities of the song and his vocals is synonymous with R&B and soul music too

The only sure way to know is to ask him via social media. You seem the type to argue with whatever genre he’ll call the song. If he calls it Afrobeats, will you finally rest?

To some of us who are not very familiar with all the different variants of music that originate from South Africa, we'd just call it Amapiano and keep it moving. You know, Master KG type beats..

However, my major issue is with people who fail to define their sound and just copy people's style blindly. Like this guy... Someone would think it's Victony singing.
Re: Nigerians, What Genre Of Music Is This? by Samantha125(op): 4:26pm On Apr 07, 2025
That's not an Afrobeat sound... There's already a genre for that sound and you can't claim something that already has a category.

Unless if you guys now want to replace your Afrobeat with SA beats... But I wouldn't like it because every now and then I want to listen to that pure Nigerian Afrobeat... I can't be listening to Afrobeat and still feel like I'm listening to SA music, you guys need to start classifying your music genres because it's killing the Afrobeat culture...🤦🤦🤦... Let Afrobeat be Afrobeat and amapiano together with other genres be classified separately as well... This is the reason why other nations confuse amapiano with Afrobeat, you guys categorise everything in Nigeria except gospel as Afrobeat... I've also seen some South Africans claiming the beat, so I'm not the only one... Can you go and ask him on my behalf? I'll buy you sweets and ice cream...😃😃😃

I might not be a music expert, but I'll try to explain since I love music.

1. Amapiano
It's a fusion of deep house, kwaito, and soul with a high pitched piano melodies and log drum bassline.

Yep... It's a sound from Limpopo province in SA... You can immediately tell that the producer is from Limpopo by just listening to it...😂😂😂

It has been around since the 90s.

It's more like a foreign sound with Nigerian lyrics.
The piano part has a touch of amapiano , the best is purely Nigerian .. your friend is suffering from tinnitus.. There is a clear difference between both beats..
