Obviously Andre Onana is not the smartest tool in the box. I believe you should always show the utmost respect to your opponent before a game no matter how poor you think they are. Now he has probably riled up and annoyed the whole Lyon team. There is no greater motivation in football than when your opponent thinks you are poor and then has the guts to say it in front of the world press.

Does anyone know Onana's actual comments? there's no way he tried to talk shit while being part of the worst man utd team in modern history.

I do understand the point of going the younger players route given we had done ready made players several times in the past. But then, we should not be buying younger players for crazy fees and then expect the fans to be patient, else we go to our academy for players. If we had gotten Dorgu for 5-10m, I am sure no one would be calling for his head.

He didn't disrespect Lyon or the players, he just said he believes United is a better team and if they play will win.

Onana said absolutely nothing wrong. Matic should stop being a baby. Believing in your team and saying you are better than the opponent is the kind of mentality we need and in no way is that disrespecting the opponent.

Even without Matic's response it was the wrong thing to say going away to their stadium. That is exactly why the journalists asked for Matic's response.

It is also not about modern political correctness. The usual thing is to just say they are a tough opponent and that we will have to play well to defeat them. It is not and has never been commonplace or wise to claim to be far better than an opponent when you are going to their stadium for a potentially tricky tie.

We should just agree to disagree on this one.

Boxing (and most martial arts) is different. In combat sports making your opponent angry actually works in your favor because a calm and composed fighter is exponentially more dangerous than one who is fighting based on emotion. It is not a street fight.
