To start with there are 151, million accounts in Nigeria, Less than 500,000 accounts have a balance above N1m

95% of bank accounts have a balance less than N50,000.

Assuming your mythical 1000 accounts were closed with their N50k balance, The withdrawn deposit is less than what it costs the bank to buy a Corolla for a junior manager…..and they buy them in the hundreds!

All it means is one of their Corolla’s crashed and was written off!

Most NigeriaNs dont realize most Nigerian bank accounts are a liability to banks that’s why they charge you for everything. The amount of money the bank makes from your N50k balance is less than the administrative costs of operating your account. That’s why they don’t even bother with ATM anymore.

Countries with valuable customers offer free banking.

Most of them didn’t close the accounts, they just cut cards online for show, most of them bank with fintechs like opay. Those who withdrew their balance are likely N2k-10k
