The mindset that people in diaspora are rich isn’t limited to just the masses, the government share the same notion and are just trying to get their share anyhow.

The payment didn’t start today, it’s been there since inception. In Canada we pay $91 for NIN and $102 for BVN. You can’t renew your passport without NIN, you need BVN to operate a Nigeria bank account.

Of course, one could travel to Nigeria to get it done for free, but a typival Naija trip will set you back atleast $5,000 (flight, gifts and walk around money). So unless you have reasons to be in naija, it’s easier to part with $200 and be done with it.

Does this actually work? I just tried to register now and I'm yet to receive the email with login details.

Even those who live in Nigeria next to the banks complain of missing funds talkless of those abroad. I rather keep my money where I stay.
