The point of bride price is not buying a woman, but in affirming her virtue. This is one area of marriage that modern culture have conveniently disposed, because it doesn't fit into the heavily promoted culture of sexual liberation and will annoy the shit out of modern women. Let me take you back to the law. David married Michal after paying her bride price (2 Samuel 3:14), but didn't when he married Abigail (1 Samuel 25:40-41). This was because Michal was believed to be a virgin, while Abigail was a widow. Brideprice is paid only for virgin (Exodus 22.16-17). I am not sure if these practice is still done, but I know that in Yoruba culture, guest will wait outside after wedding night, for the groom to show them the stained bedsheet of his bride during deflowering process, to prove that she is a virgin. Parents made sure their daughters keep themselves, and led their sons to be someone a good family will give their daughter to. All these cultural practices are measures that chained the sexual degradation that we see in today's world. Women made sure to cloth their legs, and men made sure they lived a honorable life to be worthy of woman. SO the point of brideprice is not to buy a woman, but to affirm that she is virtous. If it happens that she is not a virgin, then you have the right to request for a refund of your brideprice. |
