I never said he was all that. Just correcting this revisionism that we were not interested in him. Nobody triggered his release clause not even the Chelsea that he is headed to now. It was because he himself put a hold to any talks, not because nobody was interested.

Chelsea wanted him but did not activate his release clause either at that time. This is because clubs were waiting for him to make his decision on which club he wanted to join. Now he has decided on Chelsea they can approach his club to activate the release clause. Now that he has decided against us, we are not approaching his club to activate his release clause.

The reason neither Chelsea nor Man Utd activated his release clause since was because both clubs were waiting for him to make his decision on who he wanted to join. It was not because the clubs did not want him. Nobody is wasting time and effort activating the release clause of a player that does not want to join them.

It is not only about money. Nobody is saying we can't afford him. There is a price to pay for not making the Champion's League. It will be a bit more difficult to convince some players to join us. Some other players would not mind especially if they get bloated salaries.
