TOPIC: Why Was King David Called A Man After God's Own Heart?

Acts 13:22 NKJV
[22] And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’

*Message*

As Christians today, we have a lot to learn from the man David, a common sherpherd who rose to become Israel's greatest king.

In the Bible, God repeatedly refers to David as a man after His own Heart. We are going to see some of the things he did that earned him that honourable divine title, alongside how Christians today can become brothers and sisters after God's own heart, too. I pray God opens our understanding. Amen.

1. First of all, David won God's heart by keeping God's commandments 1 Kings 14: 8. David was a lover of God's law and he made God's law his close companion. When the children of Israel were yet to enter the promised land; years before David was born; God knew the children of Israel would demand for a king someday, and He gave them certain principles for kingship (Deuteronomy 17:14-20).

One of the principles is that: 'it (the book of the law) shall be with him (the king), and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes.' vs 19. This was something that contributed to David's success as a king, as well as his relationship with God.

As Christians today, we must realise that for us to have a special place in God's heart, we must be committed to obeying God's commandments. You need to keep His instructions passionately, both the ones in scripture and those He tells you individually. Imitating King David's footsteps, you need to be a lover of God's word (the Bible). Study the bible regularly, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and live by it, and you will reside perpetually in God's heart.

2. David followed God wholeheartedly. David put God's will above his own will. He was always interested in the things of God (he even said he prefered to be in the house of God than any other place). He is always interested in knowing God's will before he takes any step (reference: 1 Samuel 30).

To win God's heart, you need to give God your all (put your will under God's will). Anything God wants is what you want; anything God doesn't want you don't want it. It means, if you have an interest in pursuing a career, and God said,'I don't like this', you need to drop it. If you don't have interest in something and God said,'I want you to go after this', you need to go after it. That is what David did that made him a man after God's heart

3. David feared God. When Saul sinned against God, God removed him afterwards. When David sinned against God, God embraced him afterwards. Why? Because David acknowledged his sins due to the fear of God in him, and he sought repentance. David feared God and ruled with the fear of God- which pleased God.

To be a Christian after God's own heart, inculcate the fear of God and let the fear of God shape the way you think, act, and behave. Then, God can boast of you to satan that 'This is one of my children whom I so much love'.

Saul was the FIRST, and God has a thing for the First. So Saul had everything which David would never have but he blew it up just like Esau did.

There is something called "Permissive will" of God

He didn't use same standard to judge all the prophets n Kings, so it will be unwise to based our faith on their way of lives

David and his men killed 200 Philistine men and brought their foreskins to King Saul as proof of the kill and as payment for a bride, when he was only asked to bring 100 (1 Samuel 18). Remember he wasn't a ruler yet here o. Imagine killing men and removing their foreskins. Tueehh.

David was a cruel human being. No Christian should ever imitate him.

I can give countless examples of his wickedness and cruelty in the scripture.

God gave him a wonderful son who was worse than David, Absalom dealt with David. Anytime I read that part I Just laugh.

David loved God genuinely with all his heart,mind, soul and strength, of which is the greatest of all commandments.

Though he failed a number of times his failure were never due to rebellion nor disregard for God, but due to the weakness of the mortal body and soul.

God who examines the hearts of all men knows this about David.
