Statement by Kunle Adeshina

LASG COMMENCES IMMEDIATE ENFORCEMENT OF BAN ON CATEGORIES OF SINGLE USE PLASTICS.
The Lagos State Government on Tuesday announced the immediate commencement of the enforcement of the ban on Single Use Plastics (SUPs) (less than 40 microns) across the state from today

The Commissioner for the Environmental and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab who made this known during a press conference on commencement of the enforcement of the ban on Single Use Plastics held at the Ministry's Conference Room insisted that there will be no going back on the 1st of July 2025 set date for enforcement.

He stated that  the State was very explicit on the ban of certain categories of single use plastics excluding pure water sachets and pet bottles as explained when the  ban on styrofoam food containers was announced in January 2024

He added that if after 18 months moratorium, the producers have not been able to embrace alternatives to single use plastics, it simply means they have no intention of complying with the ban.

Wahab explained that by January 2025, after series of meetings and representations from concerned stakeholders which included (Manufacturers Association of Nigeria ( MAN) Restaurants and Food Services Proprietors Association of Nigeria  ( RFSPAN) and (FBRA)Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance representatives) amongst others, the state gave another grace of 6 months which expired yesterday.

He said the state government took the bold decision to ban styrofoam food containers and single use plastics of less than 40 microns explaining that the decision was majorly because of the safety and well being of residents which the government will never compromise.

"Lagos as a coastal state realises the enormous dangers that styrofoam packs & SUPs of less than 40 microns  cause our drainage channels and ecosystem causing blockades and compelling government to channel  funds that should be deployed for provision of other social services to clearing of debris from our drains" he said.

He stated that the ban of single use plastics was first effected in Bangladesh in 2002 as well as in other major cities and as at 1st of August, 2019, such bans have been introduced in over 70 countries of the world with varying degrees of enforcement whilst 33 countries have imposed a charge per bag policy.

From Tokunbo Wahab

Lagos State as a coastal state realises the enormous dangers that styrofoam packs and single-use plastics of less than 40 micron causes our drainage channels and ecosystem causing blockages and compelling the state government to channel funds that should be deployed for provision of other social services to clearing of debris from our drains.

It is on this note that the state government is officially announcing that as from today, July 1, 2025, sale and use of styrofoam and single-use plastics in Lagos State is now prohibited and anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the state's environmental laws.

Let me also emphasize that any market/store that is found storing or engaging in the sale and distribution of the single-use plastics (less than 40 microns) will be sealed up by our enforcement agency and the items confiscated.

This ban is expected to move the state towards realization of reduction of the quantum of waste generated in the state and at our different landfill sites, many of which are in the process of decommissioning.

do you focus on peripherals when you have not dealt with the basics?

What did ebilokan and his placeholder successors do with the 80 times increase in budget, due to IGR squeezed out of the masses, for 26 years if we still have to drink shitty water from boreholes in compounds with sewage septic soak away tanks?

Why have they all failed to employ engineers, technicians, accountants, clerks, layers, secretaries, billing agents etc for the past 26 years to make pipe borne water available to all Lagosians?

Lawmaker scores Lagos Water Corporation low

A Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction at the performance of the state Water Corporation.

Fafunmi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), said in Ikeja that the corporation had not been able to justify statutory allocations to it.

The lawmaker, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1 at the assembly, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the corporation had the capacity to generate much fund internally through water rates but had relied solely on government funding because of poor performance.

'' Anyone that is using water will be willing to pay for it; the corporation has not been giving us water.

"Is there any new community that Water Corporation has given water? People depend on boreholes; even government estates have industrial boreholes.

"Why do we keep pumping money into an agency that does not give us the desired results?'' he asked.

He noted that the Adiyan Waterworks was located at Ifako-Ijaiye, where many of the residents had resorted to digging boreholes as a means of getting water.

''A lot of people are falling sick because they don't drink clean water.

''In the same compound, where you have sewage, is where you have a borehole.

''There is no way you can manage the sewage that it will not leak and pollute the water; everyone drinking such is drinking contaminated water,'' he said.

The lawmaker urged the corporation to increase water reticulation and supply to residents.

This will further skyrocket the cost of living in rural and urban areas.
For instance since there's a ban on sachet water, low income earners will be forced to pay more to buy bigger plastic bottle water

When fashola was the governor, he did a good job, cleaning drainages and constructing roads. But this one is just doing window dressing instead of doing the actual job.

110% of waste and sewage blockages in Nigeria is from those things call nylon and takeaway packs.

This is long overdue. Environmental sensitive countries are using paper packaging for goods. Materials that are easier to biodegrade.
At least it's a good step.

Other states should emulate this, nigeria was a cleaner place before sachet pure water and plastic stuffs came in.
Should other states also emulate the failure of Lagos governors to employ teachers, librarians, lab. assistants, bursars, coaches, janitors etc to ensure every single child is in free schools despite PDP's federal matching funds through UBEC that was extablished in 1999?

Ratio of public to private schools in Lagos State is one to 22 ― Commissioner

The Lagos State government has said the ratio of public to private schools at both primary and secondary school levels in the state is one to 22.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, gave the revelation in her remark at the 2022 edition of the Total School Support Seminar Exhibition (TOSSE) held at Oregun in Ikeja between Thursday and Friday.

They better bring up the paper bags option as well. Let it replace nylon bags that traders are making expensive because of their greed.

Competition is healthy

Hmm, please don't blame us too much o.
What are we supposed to do when our leaders looters fail to provide water and public toilets for us out of the huge budte of trillions yearly?

The lack of state-owned pipe-borne water in the homes of Lagos residents has continued to be a source of concern, a non-profit group, Corporate Accountability and Public Advocacy Africa (CAPPA) has said.

At a press event to mark this year’s World Water Day, the group said its monitoring team’s visit to state-owned waterworks showed that most of them are not operational.

The group said the waterworks it visited include the ones at Maryland, Mushin, Ikorodu, Obalende, Agbowa, Onikan, Ikoyi, and Amuwo Odofin.

Only the one in Ikoyi is producing water, according to CAPPA.

A 45-year-old resident and father of three, Mr.Fatai Lamide told PUNCH HealthWise that no building in the community has toilet facilities.

The Oyo State-born mechanic said, “We don’t have toilet in this area, including our compound. This canal that you see serves as toilet to all of us living in this area. We defecate inside nylon and throw it inside the canal.

“For people that don’t want to use nylon, they have a special bucket that they use after which they pour it inside the canal too.

As usual, you are always quick to assault others with your bitter, hateful and ignorant doom-mongering. The ban of SUPs in Lagos does not affect satchet water that remains one of the main ways average Nigerians drink potable water.

Disliking a Government is one thing but rushing always to discredit everything said government does, with lies and misinformation, points to mental health issues and personalised hatred. You need professional help.

The times I visited Lagos for assignments or holidays when I was in Nigeria, I always blame myself at the end. When Lagosians are ready, they will do the right thing about the miscreants, powers and principalities in power installed by Pharaoh who has been feeding fat on Lagos treasury for the past 26years+

Somehow...the single use disposable plate... specifically styrofoam has disappeared in Lagos or let me say it's been long have come across it.

If we are really serious about something, we can definitely change it.

Lagos state government, especially the commissioner for environment is trying

If we can do away with sylofoam and polythene bags, humans, animals and other living things go breathe well and a saner environment.

Just check Kenya and see how they have a wonderful environment.

Indeed. The move is long overdue. If you don't force the hand of Nigerians, who are naturally very stubborn and unruly, progress will never be made.

I had a driver who used to toss everything out of the car. Food waste, satchet water bags, PET bottles etc.

I warned him several times about the need to find a bin for his waste because that is best for environmental sanitation that is the duty of everyone.

Even if we are near my business premises or residence, with bins he can use, he'd still toss stuff on the road.

He would joke that he needed to give road sweepers and cleaners work to do. In the end I sacked him. Last year. Still calls and text till today pleading for re-employment.
