A police inspector, Afolabi Adeola, was reportedly killed after he was hit by a truck at a checkpoint along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Motorway in Ogun State.

Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that the incident occurred on Sunday, around 12:30 p.m. near the Judiciary Complex checkpoint in Abeokuta.

The truck, said to have been loaded with 900 bags of cement, was reportedly approaching the checkpoint at top speed when the incident occurred.

Before ramming into the officer, the truck was said to have also rammed into another truck that had stopped at the checkpoint in compliance with police traffic control.

The impact from the crash was said to have fatally injured Inspector Adeola, who was on official duty at the checkpoint.

He was rushed to a hospital in Lagos, where he died on Monday shortly after undergoing an X-ray.

According to a report by a security analyst, Zagazola Makama, on his X (Twitter), officers from the traffic unit visited the scene, documented the crash, and recovered both vehicles to the station for further investigation.

The suspects involved are expected to be arraigned in court on Wednesday, July 3.

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, told PUNCH Metro to wait for a press release.

“Please wait for the official press release,” she said.

As of the time this report was filed, Odutola had yet to share any statement on the incident as promised.

Some tragedies sound or appear impressive. May God cleans my mind. Police always causes similar accidents and runs away from the scenes after wasting the lives of road users.

But may the departed soul rest in peace. May God console the bereaved family.

Imagine if the halted truck was a bus fully loaded with passengers and the cement truck killed all the passengers.

He most likely was trying to stop the truck to extort the driver like they're used to, crime never pays.

I traveled by road in Naija recently and OMG these illegal checkpoints are a disgrace. They way they stand in front of speeding vehicles. Like they have a superpower. Lol

Nothing in me felt sad about this news. Is it that I'm inhumane or just that I feel deep disgust for police officers? I don't understand o. But few days ago when I heard that Jota and his brother died, I almost shed tears as a Chelsea fan. Then when Peter Rufai followed, I felt feverish. But for this one, no emotion of sympathy followed in any way. What's happening to me

He thought he kept another life at home,hence the reason why he stood at the front of the truck

Most of these checkpoints are unnecessary, in some instances within a 200m radius,you encounter more than five check points as if the country is at war.
I,am yet to read where these police men have reported breakthrough in crime as a result of these dubious checkpoints.
The main reason is to squeeze money out of the hands of commuters and risk their lives doing that .
Can't they see how western countries operate stop and search ?
The IG, CP and the DPO's are aware of these illegalities and it's common knowledge,the returns go to them.

If you ply this sagamu abeokuta road on the daily, you will notice the unnecessary road blocks by the police. How motorists almost knock down the frsc officials because they stand after the barriers made by the police. Some deaths are avoidable sha. Rest in peace Afo.

It's a road i ply quite occasionally... You need to see amount of traffic they cause there atimes. Moreso, the location is quite a depression, going to Abeokuta.

I'm always happy when it's raining because that's the only reason you won't find them there. Else, they're always there 24/7 doing what they know how to do best!

What official release,? what further investigation? The deed has occurred very visible to the blind and audible to the deaf. Why on earth will an officer stay put in a checking point unconscious of incoming or outgoing vehicles to the point of an accident. They super glue them there.

Don't expect any reply from the Force, he is SURELY and OFFICIALLY on an illegal duty. Police check points are ILLEGAL. What a way to die, may his soul go to heaven to trap the reward of his good/bad deeds while on earth
