Parents How Much Do You Give Your Kids As Pocket Money To Take To School? by Nazgul(op): 9:04pm On Jul 04, 2025
There's this aunty of mine who told me she gives her 3 kids 4k each every day to take to school. I told her it's too much. Meaning she'll be spending about 12k every day for the whole term. This is minus school fees and other fees private school usually demands from their students.

When I suggested to her that giving them food from home to take to school would be more economical for her, she told me they're in secondary school so it's going to look odd. That it's only nursery and primary school students who carry food to school.

I told her that more than 65% of working class 9am-5pm Nigerians now carry food from home to work which they microwave and eat because of how expensive food has become. And they're not shy. How much more secondary school students.

So I want to throw this question to the mummies and daddies in the house, how much do you give your teenage kids in secondary school as pocket money.

I understand that things are so expensive these days. Oridinary meatpie I used to buy N200 around 2022 is now 1k. Donuts of 50-N100 is now 500-800. Plastic soda is 500. So is 4k too much for a teenager to take to school, or would you prefer they just eat to their satisfaction at home before going to school?

You say TERM? You mean your aunty in Nigeria gives her kids 4k each everyday? 12k daily?

Please where do the parents of these kids work? I want to apply.

As for the question __.

a meal in my kids school is now 2k - so depending on the school 4k a day may be what they are charging.
preparing food for the kids to take to school daily is an option, but it comes with its own wahala if you dont have a maid.

as things stand - the last born gets food cooked for him to take to school, the older kids buy food in school.
also some schools have a policy against children bringing cooked food to school.

i actually just pay directly to someone handling the food, rather than give the kids the cash.

Her first daughter in SS2 uses an iPhone which was bought by her. Besides there are schools in this Lagos that charge over 15m per year. Meaning any parent who can afford that should be able to afford 12k per day.

For me I just felt it's too much. They're still pre-teen. They don't need to look obese just to convince people that you aren't suffering.

The thing is, most kids use their pocket money to buy junk. During my secondary school days, ice cream, and other junk was what consumed my pocket money. Those things makes you obese.

Her first daughter is just 15, yet she's so fat that you can mistake her for a 25 year old. It's not good for her health.

Yea I know that things have definitely Increased. I'm not married yet, neither do I have kids living with me so I don't have a rough estimate of how much they should be spending in school.

But for me, I feel giving them food from home to take to school is still the best.

In Lagos and even in Abuja, school fees runs into millions per term.
Meatpie is about 1500 and drinks cost like 500.

I don't believe in giving kids money until they are in their late teens.

But if I were in Nigeria,as a lazy woman it is chowdeck that will be delivering food to their school .

When you marry someone like ediko5, know that,it's 200 naira your child will take to school daily. At least it can buy those fan yogo that those hawkers will use scissors to cut into two for siblings to share and buns or puff puff or warra...

I can assure you that once you start paying your tithes, you'll have more than enough to give each kid at least 10k every day as pocket money.

This I have seen.

I have been wondering how children become overweight, especially when diet is said to be 90% within parental control. This is just one good insight. Thank you

A lot of parents these days don't watch their kids eating habits. They give them freedom to eat whatever they want and whenever they want it.

If you go to most private schools and see how obese the kids there look, you'll shake your head.

Depends on time and conditions.
When i was in primary school. My dad paid the school cafeteria monthly for me. I also took money to school and I'm talking enough money.

Secondary school things don worse especially in senior secondary school. I went to school with no pocket money or allowance. I no dey even chop comot. I remember my classmate asking me randomly at break why my stomach was always singing. Hunger dey tear me and dem think say na play.

Omo.. it is well...

That amount can be channelled into prepping a decent and healthy meal as well as a snack that can serve for morethan a day. Asides the economics of scale, the children would not be exposed to food poisoning and the likes.

That's because the spirit doesn't want you to attack me. Touch not my anointed remember? wink

See eh, it's even this hardship that's making more people come. If you come to my center tomorrow you might not even see a seat. Everywhere would be filled to the brim and there would be miracles.

Ah, 4k daily for school? That one na serious school fees for some people! 😅 I dey wonder if she dey send dem to school or to a buffet!

Abeg, we sabi say secondary school students fit carry food from home no be nursery and primary matter! Na dem dey dey form "cool kids," but tell me who no wan chop? Even all these working-class people wey carry food to work dey do “meal prep” like dem dey run fitness challenge!

I don collect plenty advice from "nurses," "lawyers," and even "engineers" on how to manage school lunch, but still no be small wahala. My suggestion? Ensure dem guzzle some solid food for house, give dem small change for "emergency suya" and save that 4k for something beta, like jollof rice after school. If dem wan chop expensive snacks for school, make dem use their own money! 😂

If they take food to school, they get 300 for snacks. Without food, they get 600-1000.
